@TheImperatorKnight One thing I would have expected would be some corroborating evidence for this. It is also possible that Chuikov may have been absent checking over the front line units and their commanders. It is also possible he may have asked his Chief of Staff to move the units by radio after looking over the situation at the front. After all, he did have time to go to some units and shoot a few officers (although where this actually fits in the timeline is a good question). Also, it is possible Chuikov may have thought that moving his HQ to the east bank of the Volga might have enabled him to get a better grasp of the overall picture, rather than trying to figure out how things were going "up close and personal" with an army that was split in two. We will probably never know for sure, unless there exist some radio communications that spread some light on the subject.
