@lati long I think they also had a severe ego problem - they couldn't accept the fact that they had actually been out-generalled. You only need to look at Ludendorff and Hindenburg spreading the lie that the German army was "stabbed in the back", or von Seeckt's deliberate underhanded methods for skirting the treaty limitations set out in Versailles to see this.

One other issue for the German officer corps is that an oath was considered binding unto death. Hitler thus effectively trapped and neutralized the majority of them when he got them to swear an oath to serve him personally and protect the Fatherland.
