I suspect that one reason that Poles, Estonians and the like were not shipped back may be for two reasons. The first, which I cannot confirm, is that the respective puppet communist regimes didn't file a request to repatriate their citizens and soldiers, giving the Allies an out. The second reason might be that the Allies didn't recognize the legitimacy of the puppet regimes. However, that still doesn't explain why people who had left Russia 25-30 years before Operation Keelhaul were repatriated. I also think that one reason for the repatriation was a willful blindness on the part of the politicians who instigated this. Rather like those who deny the Holocaust, or the right wing members of the American public who refuse to believe that police officers were assaulted during an attempted insurrection on January 6th. Humanity has an incredible ability to blind itself to the facts if they don't conform to one's preconceived ideas.

Tons of people allowed themselves to be fooled by Stalin and the Communists, as many did with Hitler. Too many people going through the college/university system seem to allow themselves to be fooled into believing that Socialism is a great thing and will "save the world". What surprises me is that more than 30 years after the Berlin Wall came down and the Soviet Union died a more or less unmourned death, people STILL think communism is great and should work. The same goes for those who are following the current more extreme right-wing movements in North America and Europe. Just goes to show two things: people often don't think (they just listen to what they want to hear), and they don't learn from the past.
