  1. That sounds entirely plausible, as people from the Vinnitsa/Beheromet area would still be seething from being "handed over" to the USSR in 1940 (more like Romania was blackmailed). I am sure a lot of them would have signed up for a bit of payback. I visited this area back in the mid-1990s, and the locals still remember when the area used to be part of Romania (even though it is now part of the Ukraine).
