It wasn't just business (a bit of a cynical statement), but also abiding by the treaties they had signed (unlike a certain bottle-brush moustached dictator). It is no coincidence that the oldest treaty still in effect in the world is the Anglo-Portuguese treaty of "perpetual friendships, unions [and] alliances", first signed in 1373. Both parties have abided by this treaty, with Britain helping Portugal secure its independence during the Peninsular campaign, and Portugal sending troops to the Western Front in support of Britain in WW1.

@brucetucker4847 Explains why I didn't get the reference. I never watched the movie (and have never wanted to either).

Besides, if Britain had left things alone, who knows when they would have become the next target of aggression by a Germany that didn't stand by its treaties. To quote one of my favorite lines from the movie, "Battle of Britain", "The Fuhrer's guarantees guarantee nothing!"
