  7. Throttle plates are really quite closed when in closed position. I'd still drape a red rag over it or put a latex glove over it, condom-style. Any mess you prevent is mess you don't have to clean up later.

  8. If you can find one that screws into the hole like Lisle 34194, it's a wunnerful, wunnerful thing. (There are more expensive versions of this funnel concept. Much more expensive. But for the Dodge, I use this Lisle, and I love it. Less than $10 on Amazon.)

  9. What he's fumbling towards is moisture and acid buildup etc etc, but I'd have zero qualms about going a year on oil changes on rarely-driven things. 20W-50 is just silly. It's about modern bearing clearances but you'll never convince him that thinner oils aren't going to KILL his engine.

  20. I just peeked at Rock Auto. Looks like gasket suppliers are all over the map on paper/felt vs. rubbery-O's for PT Cruiser turbos. I'm a big fan of the rubbery-O's, since they're reusable.

  24. Ray, please consider the Lisle 50210 gasket separator. A thin, stiff blade with a hammering surface so you can pound it between block rail and pan rail, then lever it.

  25.  @smittysbuilds  I hestitate on a lot of the new battery-powered ones because I'm not a pro, and I'm cheap, and a battery dying in a couple of years and needing an expensive replacement but I never used it all that much, really irks me. Air through a hose will not go obsolete! That being said, having no hose, sure! And for a pro who will truly wear out the battery and tool, too and get every penny's worth, I know why they do it.

  27. ​ @Wakeupandsniffthecoffee  The Durango I work on for a family member has over 430K miles on it now. 5.9L engine. Valve cover gaskets are easy! Do you have a small torque wrench for light duty? One of the reasons you don't see Ray use a torque wrench is that he has torque wrenches -- which teach you that most things don't need to be super duper tight! Valve cover gaskets are the classic example of "no, not that tight, you're could mess things up if you crank down on it." I don't know how the heater hoses are routed on your 4.7, but I use some string ot hold it up andout of the way on the passenger side valve cover. And yeah, air intake tube and even air filter box,. I remove for a job like this. One more tip -- clean the intake manifold area above/next to those valve covers before you remove the covers. Lots of leaves, sand, bugs can pile up in that area that you don't want falling into the engine. Compressed air, vacuum cleaner, gentle garden hosing ? whatever's best for you. (I vote compressed air.)

  33. XZN 12-point triple-squares are what we used before Torx! (shake cane) Also, before they made soft-headed XZN bolt holes that would distort, they made six-sided Allen hex holes that were soft and really easily distorted and rounded out! So XZN has a better chance of cracking the bolt loose.

  41. Milton does make some really good Shrader caps for tire valve stems, metal with a little gasket inside. I hear they're required in trucking. Somebody should make them for service valves!

  46. Veeedy intedestink! I saw those rockers and was just confused. But I'm guessing that behind all of that is traditional VW inline 4 valvetrain: one cam, eight valves, vertical, in a row, bucket lifter (hydraulic) directly pushed up and down by the cam lobes, brutally simple and light weight (other than the width of that lifter.)
