  2. Yes. I have a big nail just for that. Roofing gutte-holder-upper nail, with a little bit of file or grinder, does the trick. A few light hammer taps and it punches a nice drain hole. A second hole lets air in and it drains even better. Reduces "sploosh!" when the filter is unscrewed. Mind you, I'm a home DIY'er and I'm patient. And when preferable, oil change draining is LHO (long, hot, overnight.)

  7. As a home DIY'er using jack stands and a floor jack, I use coffee can/peanut cans to dump lug nuts into as I go with the impact gun. Keeps them from getting lost and and keeps sand and grit out of the threads, too

Twin-plug cars you may have heard of: Mercedes ML SUV (for both power and efficiency, but also by firing one off a little earlier than the other, reduced noise) Datsun/Nissan NAPZ motor of the 80's. Porsche racing cars of the late 60s/70's/80's (very wedgey piston tops were obscuring the flame kernel made by just one spark plug) Other Honda trivia: Bet they're doing two plugs so they can get away with lean burn during light load situations. And to just get closer to 100% combustion in all situations, for efficiency and power and emissions. Remember the VX lean burn motor in the early 80's? Remember the CVCC motors of the early 70's? Carb dispensing a lean mixture for the main intake manifold runners, richer mixture for the precombustion chambers where the spark plugs lived OK, I'm slightly older than Ray...

  19. Have a friend who was stumped years back on a GM big block of some kind. Rebuilt but had oil pressure problems they couldn't figure out. Eventually they had the oil pan off it, but supplied oil to the pump somehow, and ran it (this may have been messy) and my friend (under there getting messy?) discovered a crack in the block accounting for the oil pressure loss.

  21. I have always been fascinated by people saying, "Oh,. everybody knows this brand only uses these sized wrenches..." I never noticed! My VW from the 80's just taught me that it has 6,7,8, 9, 10,11,12,13,14,15,17,18,19,21,22mm... so I never thought about it. Any nut could be anything!

  35. Maybe military vehicles get tended to more often than street cars? Also, easy field servicability is paramount. Also, they might be really good worm gear clamps? Some have inner sleeves, some have springs to assist in proper tension over age/heat changes.

  44. This is just one man's opinion, but having those aluminum heater core tubes exposed in the driver's footwell just strikes me as an annoyance. Of course, my opinion could change if I lived in northern climes, or it it made heater core replacement an easy job. But yeesh, some kind of insulation would be nice, especially if there's no heater valve blocking flow in the summer.

  49. The manufacturers put a lot less metal into the designs, to save weight and increase fuel economy and performance. This makes them a lot more prone to warp when things go wrong, and also have very little room to machine when they get older. Add the low price of new parts for many cars and the decision becomes easy, just replace.
