Ray, glad to see you enlist the help of another mechanic. Wish you'd done it when moving the old one out and the new one in! Reduce the odds of things gone wrong. Heck, some seat covers and moving blankets also might have protected the interior from possible screw up.

I've got a rubber hose in my spark plug tool drawer just for the Ford 4.6L 2V in my fleet! I trust my feel/fingers/experience on all of the other cars, but reaching into the dark crevices of a Ford van? Better safe than sorry!
1
My theory: gas shocks leaked gas, ride height changed, toe changed, inner edge wear. Outer edge wear caused by hard driving young person who borrows the car.
1
Ray's "little pry bar" is a Snap On O-ring "pick", right?
1
I was wondering about the order of bolt installation on that seal carrier plate, too. Ray got REEE'd at on a front main seal on an LS a few weeks ago, for similar issues of seal/crank concentricity, no? I believe the long vertical bolts through oil pan up to seal carrier plate got installed in Ep. 1. Of course, the video is not the complete story, we don't always know what got torqued when.
1
Your alignment rack has specs for a DeSoto? I'll drive right down! (It may take me a week.)
1
Uh, I am not an electrician or code inspector but... what the heck is that plug and electrical cord and hole in the wall behind the hydraulic press?!😀
1
Ray: Yes, that "wood screw" goes there. That's the kind of screw Ford uses for things that screw into plastic intake manifolds. See also, coil packs.
1
Do axle shafts get hotter than the axle tubes when everything's warmed up? The oil is in the bottom of the axle tubes (which is also a big part of where the oil sheds heat) then there shouldn't be any length difference between tube and shaft.... Hmmm.... however, I bet that rotor gets "thicker" with heat expansion while the caliper bracket doesn't get as hot. Doesn't account for the noise happening in turns, though.
1
@stevewolf2620 How about filters? Did they even give you a filter?!
1
At the levels of torque required for that wheel bearing nut, there are no rules.
1
In a world... without doodly-dos... one man... fixes things in relative peace and quiet...
1
OK, but why was it so hard to start on a summer day in Florida the other day?
1
Now you need to modify it to shoot taters!
1
We're counting plugs. Definitely.
1
@brisiobrien1 Yeah, you never know. I never got any deals from my local VW dealer back in the day, but am now getting the "cool guy price" at a different dealer and its so close to aftermarket that it's hard to resist sometimes.
1
In this case, those plastic fuel lines live inside the intake manifold, where a fresh supply of outside air flows constantly, so that helps.
1
A magnetic socket and locking extension (or long socket) is very nice for both removal and installation! (I do use fuel hose on one very tricky motor in my fleet, though. Ford 4.6L 2V inside a van nose.)
1
My theory is that slow, careful, but mildly off-axis force doesn't hold a candle to on-axis, sharp impulses of force.
1
A man retired from my workplace, where he was the safety officer. A week or so later he began work on the restoration of that old car he always wanted to do. Removed driveshaft, car rolled, crushed him dead.
1
If there are contaminants inside the new oil filter and you don't prefill, aren't they going into the motor anyway? I prefill. Also, I've taken to blowing my funnels clean of dust before putting oil in. And, of course, alway be paranoid about those plastic film bottle seals! I think it was Eric O/South Main Auto who discovered a tiny piece of that film screwing up a lifter on an Isuzu SUV a few years ago.
1
I used dry cleaner coat hanger wire for a long time, but when I tried the newfangled S hooks, well, they're really good! Hard to put my finger on it. They seem to stay put? Quick and easy to use? $10.99 I don't regret spending at all.
1
$7.99 + tax at O'Reilly's gets you a pair of S-shaped caliper-hanging hooks. I don't have that exact brand but they really are a nice option to use.
1
It's an option but it also involves undoing two ball joints per side and a camber bolt, I think. But the camber bolt location can be marked with a punch. (?) Hazy memory.
1
"Now if the truck was in Italy, it would come out the front..."
1
I come here to learn about auto diagnosis and repair! But I love most of the other stuff, too.
1
I'm a big fan of preventive maintenance, but on these modern cartridge bearings? Yeah, it's a random crapshoot, wait until noise begins.
1
Car with world's largest temp gauge still overheated.
1
Oh, I'm sure all of the other oil change "technicians" in his past changed the crush washer when they changed his oil. And then used a torque wrench to tighten it to factory spec.
1
Now you need a loaner car for your customers. And by "loaner car", of course, I mean, "PT Cruiser."
1
@jasonkool535 Ah. This is the price Ray pays for being a generalist. I wonder if he ever googles when stuck in a pickle like this?
1
You were going to check that fitting but then the phone rang. DOO DE DOO DE DOO.
1
Probably not. Just a solution for power/torque/mpg/goodness.
1
Well, this job definitely took you to Funkytown.
1
@davidscott7005 At that point it's just cheaper to go on ebay and buy the American-made vintage Craftsman socket you need!
1
@eldridge201 Or maybe he needs a "Texas Twister" kit for his air hammer, which turns it into an air puller.
1
I don't mind some hour-long videos but I don't want it to be the norm! Makes it hard to watch all of your videos.
1
If you won't say "headers", are you going to call a water pump a "coolant pump" next?
1
@mishahendriks3020 After the battery clamps are tightened, clean and dry, added afterwards. Keeps moisture/dirt/acid out of where the metal is touching, prevents corrosion.
1
Nausea, heartburn, indigestion, upset stomach, diarrheaaaaaa....yeah, ATF exchange time.
1
Need bigger hammers.
1
I remember when New Jersey's biggest Chevy dealership burned to the ground because of a dropped incandescent drop light, when somebody was doing fuel system work on a schoolbus.
1
@tylerjoseph7378 Yes! Ack!
1
You are a man of principle. You wouldn't lie to a parts clerk and just say it's a '63 up front? 😁
1
I hear the scientists have said that steam can be 212 degrees Fahrenheit... or much hotter!
1
The long skinny electric ratchets are Snap On ($$$!) -- check out Torque Test Channel here on YouTube for other affordable competitors. His red right angle cordless impact gun is Milwaukee. Also not cheap but it sure works for him! You can also see various brands compared on the Torque Test Channel. His basic 1/2" cordless impact gun is Ridgid.
1
Well, based on this video, I'm worried he's been in another car accident.
1
Ray, please consider the advice of the Car Wizard, who spent a few years at Cessna and did a lot of riveting -- and undoing of rivets. The Car Wizard on YouTube, 12 Best Mechanic Tips & Trucks, 1/2/22, , 22:58 mark.
1
Innovation: buy another GoPro, set it up on the floor under the car to monitor if any nuts or sockets fall through the engine bay to the floor! Then you can review the footage when you're wondering where to start the search, Or maybe just buy some locking extensions and magnetic sockets.
1
I got a giant nail used for roofing gutters and sharpened it up a little and I use that. Makes for a more civilized filter removal!
