  6.  @h.a.9880  Another friend was a tank commander in West Germany who saw the battle plans a Lieutenant with special clearance would be exposed to and he noticed his tank unit didn't exist in any plans beyond the opening phase. I knew someone else who was talking with a Pershing crew member and he made some comment about East Germany being a smoking mess if Pershing was ever used. The Pershing guy replied that the targets of those missiles were all in West Germany because that's where the East German soldiers would be.

  9. I knew a sailor who did 'dive & drive' on a modified nuclear sub. They no longer had missiles and they delivered SEALs to the coastal waters of 'other nations' where they accomplished 'tasks'.

In addition I knew a Special Weapons Technician who was performing disassembly on a MGM-31B Pershing 2 warhead in a warhead building (that's the official name of the structure) in West Germany when a hotdog fighter pilot took a supersonic joyride over the base with a sonic boom in tow. Pilots were too much of a resource to discipline him apparently but he came close to creating a 'serious incident'.

  13.  @MrAnticlimate  It's quite possible that they encountered issues during construction that they could work through with the smaller hopper but went beyond bounds when the tanks where scaled up. Engineering might have had low confidence in the item and I'm sure they picked up construction techniques along the way. The hopper had some issues along the way as well. I heard it from LabPadre not long after his camera took the long shot of the explosion from 5.8 miles away. I have no idea where he heard it but few people are more plugged in.

  17. The missiles were radio controlled from the ground. They received pitch, yaw, and explode commands from the computer via the MTR or Missile Tracking Radar. No "processor" per say, just a set of roughly 100 tube opamps hardwired to produce a firing solution.

  19. The guidance computer is actually based on a telephone line condition chart recorder being developed at Western Electric in Murray Hill, New Jersey. An engineer on the project came up with a servo driven potentiometer to store data tables. He had a dream and in that dream he was in London and the soldiers at an AA battery invited him in to see the gear that was automatically directing their artillery, where he saw his servo-pot device being used to store ballistics tables and to solve ballistics equations. He convinced his boss to assign him and another engineer to realizing that goal and a gun direction system called "Number 9" resulted which shot down 89 of 91 German V1s in its first month of use. That system evolved into the M-33 gun Director which evolved into the Nike guidance computer. The processing was done by approximately 100 opamps and the servo-pot mechanism which Scott shows a little glimpse of the top of at 2:30.

The Missile Command arcade game was a copy of the tactical console (complete with trackball) used at the AADCP (Army Air Defense Command Post) to designate targets to multiple Nike batteries which were arranged in rings around the defended area. Look up MISSILE MASTER (AN/FSG-1) for more. The Missile Master filtered the Air Force radar network to send designation commands to batteries which would then track the targets themselves.

Thorium is NOT A FUEL BECAUSE IT WILL NEVER BURN IN A REACTOR. They start and run using U-235 or Plutonium and over time excess neutrons from that uranium-235 or plutonium breed additional uranium-233 from the thorium to extend the cycle. The U-233 is then burned by the neutron flux. I wish completely clueless people wouldn't lie about "thorium reactors". You don't seem to realize that you're simply being manipulated to be in support of nuclear fuel reprocessing which is illegal in the US and where the seed plutonium comes from.

  33. The missile knows nothing except that it's receiving steering commands and if those stop for 2 seconds to then self-destruct. The Missile Tracking Radar knows where the missile is by following a beacon in the missile. That azimuth, elevation, and range was fed to the computer to generate a predicted point of intercept and steeping commands to guide the missile to a point 300 feet in front and above the target where the burst order was issued.

My guess at 4:22 is that it's either CO2 & water vapor and/or solid oxygen which froze around the LOX fill or vent for the 1st stage, or possibly it might be from the bleed vent at the end of one of the flexible tubes you can see connecting the stages prior to separation which I'm guessing handle MVac chill gas. You often see similar "snow" on the 2nd stage Merlin turbopump exhaust duct just prior to ignition.

  42.  @samgeorge4798  These missile actually "flew" with the wings providing 0.5G of active aerodynamic lift just like a plane's wings. Trajectory would arc above the target elevation so the missile was always flying down to the target. Operational ceiling was just over 100,000 feet and initial elevation dictated maximum range which was about 95 miles against a typical medium level airborne target, a little less for a high altitude bomber. A surface target could be slightly further away... I seem to remember a figure just short of 120 miles, but the "S-S Mission" button was only added later in the system's life. Top speed of mach 3.65 and at launch they were already supersonic before traveling their own length. Drag was not much of an issue.

The "there are no failures" thing only applies when new territory in a base science is being probed. This is a commercial product using the same propulsion technology found on the Cold War ICBM fleet and this failure mode is why Apollo used solid abort systems.

  49. Hercs had 4 times the range and FAR more punch so fewer sites were necessary. Nuclear upgrades started in 1957 and decommissioning was mostly complete by 1972 because ICBMs and SLBMs changed the threat. ALSO, Hercs move much faster and some locations could not be upgraded because the radar and launch sites were too close for the faster missiles.

  50. There were 4 Nike Ajax batteries around Hanford. When they switched to Hercules, three were closed in 1958 leaving only the site on Rattlesnake Mountain 46° 23.508'N, 119° 32.028'W which was closed in 1960. The Ajax sites are at 46° 41.724'N, 119° 42.163'W, 46° 44.519'N, 119° 25.602'W, and 46° 41.174'N, 119° 24.459'W. All GPS coords are for launch sites. The radar fire control sites overlooked them from a couple miles away.
