  10.  @Person01234  It should force the remaining 15% to drive slower (assuming they won't break the limit) so there will be less overtaking. Also, it probably has something to do with the safe speed if the drivers drive at the speed that feels safe to them and that isn't completely off the mark. (However, this won't work if drivers primarily consider their own safety and there are pedestrians around.)

  23. I'm from Helsinki. I would not cycle here at all because I absolutely refuse to cycle with motor traffic. But, even if that weren't an issue, the bike lanes near where I live seem to be completely filled with big piles of snow this winter.

Just limiting rents won't on its own increase supply (and, in fact, it can reduce the supply of housing for rent if housing becomes less valuable for prospective landlords but not less valuable to prospective homeowners). Access to housing will then be limited by some other factor than price, like queueing time, connections, or luck. Renters are incentivized to hang on to their leases even if it's no longer an optimal house/apartment for them. Also, landlords are less incentivized to maintain the houses/apartments they own in a good condition. A clear majority of economists are against rent control.

  38. I think in dense urban areas there's another method that should be used to control car traffic, namely road tolls / congestion charges. That way, traffic becomes faster, and even those who drive a car benefit. A price should in principle guarantee that only those for whom the benefit of driving exceeds the price drive. (Same thing kind of happens with congestion but in that case, the "payment" in the form of time isn't received by anyone and represents destroyed value.)

I think Detroit actually filed for chapter 9 bankruptcy instead of defaulting illegally. In this video, it was mentioned that in many US states municipalities are not allowed to file for bankruptcy. I wondered if at some point such municipalities might become unable to meet their obligations with any amount of cutbacks or tax hikes.

  49. What about Houston, Texas? I recently saw a video that informed that it's the only major US city without zoning restrictions. While a total lack zoning can create problems of its own, one would think that it would do away with this particular problem. Does Houston have the "missing middle"?
