@-koperkat8415 "I think the debate is about grass-field lawns, which are terrible for the environment." That probably depends on the climate. If you need to irrigate the lawn then it would be better to have something else but if the lawn can survive without maintenance (other than mowing) then it's probably OK.

@Aidan Collins "that is a regressive tax" That (and other less progressive taxes) are the solution of the more left-wing countries of Europe.
1
@Aidan Collins I'm myself from Finland and Finland does also have rural areas where not having a car would be very difficult (the population density being about half of that of the US). Also, Finland's tax system is less progressive in other ways too. The general VAT rate is 24% which is almost twice that of even the highest sales tax rates in the US. It doesn't have to be that punishing for the poor if the extra revenue is used to fund income transfers.

1:25 Hey! How come you don't respond to every "G E K O L O N I S E E R D" comment?
1
@NotJustBikes Seems like it's finally coming!
1
@sirjmo It's still the same issue. If a cap on rent raise forces the rent to be below what a market-clearing rent would be same problems ensue. "Supply and demand shouldn't be so volatile that old properties require massive raises in rent without increasing services." If you're right, then rents won't increase quickly unless they were too low before. Either way, limiting rents or rent increases is either unnecessary or harmful. (Though I can imagine demand increasing quite quickly in some places.)

@justicejoycetv "the data shows" Do you have a reference?
1
@daviddecampii8448 I think it's just Ontario.
1
Germany?
1
I wish Helsinki had an "anything goes" policy when comes to architecture.
1
@Bastiaanspijkman "environmental impact? Reduced packaging?" But cardboard can be recycled.
1
4:05 "acoustic bicycles" :D
1
2:15 Wow! They're teaching IPA to small children now?
1
@TheGlull It's OK. I just thought you weren't aware of the feature (but seemingly you were after all).
1
Frame locks are common in Finland (or at least they were back when I was still using a bike).
1
@NotJustBikes You could always use Google Streetview (which you have used at least a couple of times).
1
I'm surprised that those HAWK crossing traffic lights have such long cantilevers. Wouldn't connecting them to the ground on the other side too make them more durable? I guess there must be some engineering or economic reason for it.
1
"nobody cares about us!" Everybody cares about you. You're where that big explosion happened a century ago.
1
I think it's because they can be thin so they require less material.
1
@fredrikbystrom7380 Yeah I know, but I couldn't resist trolling a little bit. :)
1
@PikkaBird "egonomics[sic]" Did you mean to write "ergonomics" or "economics"? Both are salient.
1
@PikkaBird I would have thought that the economics of using aluminium would be simply worse (because it's more expensive).
1
@PikkaBird I guess one could use stainless steel though it's more expensive so I'm not sure it would be cheaper than aluminium.
1
Maybe you place navigational buoys such that they need to be evaded forcing lower speeds.
1
@Landrassa1 But they're sufficient for "no garbage day".
1
@WayneSzwarc "I think you will find that, in financial markets, no one can predict anything with any level of certainty." Prediction can be difficult but I only wanted to say "Central Bank intervention" can only be of temporary effect in this regard.
1
@GregVidua "Netherlands is the only country that does it universally well" There are almost 200 countries in the world. Haver you checked every one of them?
1
@GregVidua "people who specialize in safe roads place Switzerland, Sweden and Netherlands" Well, then the Netherlands doesn't seem to be the only one. I would think that e.g. Singapore does it universally well as well.
1
@mileycyrus4800 From what I've heard in Singapore traffic flows smoothly (partly because owning a car is made very expensive).
1
@peepeevs "in my eyes, the Netherlands is the best" It might be best. I was mostly skeptical of the wording "only one".
1
@iz5808 "Helsinki is a pretty dense city" I'd say Helsinki is more spread out than it needs to be.
1
12:00 Can someone who knows about motorcycles tell why are some motorcycles like this so much louder than other motorcycles?
1
@MaximeKG Such competition doesn't really explain why cities would force low-density residential areas by zoning.
1
@PurooRoy I've heard that out of the 5 Nordic countries, Iceland is the most car-loving and most averse to public transit.
1
@georgesbv1 "still the planes fly a lot faster than trains run." But the air density is also below 30% of sea level.
1
At least the amount of low-density suburban area is purely a political decision, though I'm not sure what was the motivation behind it. If you let market forces run amok developers would, at least in high demand areas, pack a lot more housing to the same area because that would bring more $$$.

In case someone is curious about pronunciation: -Oulu was pronounced correctly. -Tampere was pronounced almost correctly, but both of the 'E' letters were pronounced wrong. He pronounced both of them as a schwa (or something close to a schwa). In Finnish, 'E' is a front vowel. There are no central vowels in Finnish.
1
It doesn't sound so bad. Presumably most drivers drive at speeds that they feel don't endanger them. Using that and forcing most people to roughly the same speeds then improves the safety to other drivers as well. However, if drivers mostly take into account their own safety this approach doesn't work in places where there are e.g. pedestrians.
1
3:37 Clearly modernist architecture is a part of the problem.
1
Do you also ride down (or up!) the stairs?
1
Same for Belgium vs. Germany.
1
@Ryleeman54number2 At least wherever there are pedestrians the speed limits should be a lot lower.
1
@Ryleeman54number2 Might be that 30 km/h is slow enough so in most areas under 25 km/h might not be necessary.
1
@Ryleeman54number2 It's appropriate, or even too fast, for downtown areas where there's a lot of foot traffic.
1
Bergen is rainy.
1
Europe has its own problems.
1
What about apartment buildings or condos? Do they have communal bins? One would think that that's enough to do away with garbage day. You just throw your trash into the bin and the garbage collectors pick it up at some day which you don't have to worry about.
1
It's not a jam. Just a lower speed. There's a difference.
