This puts the border tension between Belarus and Poland in a new light. A distraction, maybe?

I think you nailed it. Russia's first and last concern has always been getting as much of a buffer around its heartland as it possibly can.

I have no idea what the actual Russian objective is, but the rhetoric on both sides seems to boil down to that old paradox of "a gun in my hand is a defensive weapon and is therefore no threat to you, but a gun in your hand is an offensive weapon and is therefore a threat to me."

Just FYI, the word "corps" is pronounced the same as the word "core." Also, at least here in the USA we usually pronounce "Seoul" the same as the word "soul"; I'm not sure if that's correct, though. Excellent work as usual! <3

India really deserves a permanent seat on the UN Security Council.

@command_unit7792 Having nukes only prevents you from being nuked. It doesn't automatically rule out conventional warfare, and especially doesn't rule out economic warfare. (Although interestingly, the scale of conventional warfare has evidently shrunk since the dawn of the nuclear era.) Geopolitical goals are largely dictated by geography (hence the term), and unless I missed something Russia's geography hasn't changed in the past few centuries. :)

@GoodTimesBadTimes Don't apologize. English is a weird language, with lots of these homophones (that's the fancy term for when words are different but pronounced the same). I guarantee you that my occasional attempts to speak some Polish (my family's Polish on my mother's side) would make your ears bleed. ^_^

Speaking as Joe Citizen here in the USA, it's time for the gloves to come off. I don't think a formal declaration of war is needed, but if we don't already have large numbers of US troops "going on vacation" to "volunteer" in this war, we need to get that going in one big hurry. And if some of these US military volunteers happen to figure out a way to bring their Abrams tanks or Patriot missile systems or whatever with them... well, we can only chalk it up to American ingenuity.
28
There is no distinction between tactical and strategic nuclear weapons. Anyone who says otherwise is either bluffing, uninformed, misinformed, or nuts.
27
Si vis pacem, para bellum.

I know, and I'm sorry. I literally can't make the right sounds.
20
Good to see you back, dude! As for what I think, I think that we need to slap Russia down before things really get out of hand. Of course, that's easy to say sitting in my chair on the other side of the world. :-/
20
@curocurovic6675 Feel free to start making sense, dude. (Not saying you're right or wrong here; I'm saying that I have no idea what you're trying to say.)

"Everyone wants their independence... until they run out of money." --Sir Humphrey Appleby, "Yes, Minister"

The USA and Europe should already be thinking ahead to helping Ukraine rebuild after they formally win. As the channel Perun put it, we must put together a Marshall Plan for Ukraine. If we fail to do so and leave the country a devastated wreck, it will radicalize and cause no end of trouble for the entire region. If we help them rebuild and solidify their newly annealed nation, we will have a loyal ally in a key geostrategic position for the next century at least.

When you stand in the middle of the road, you get hit by traffic from all directions.

I've said this before, but drawing down our (USA) armed forces, especially our Navy, so far has been an epic mistake. I'm not sure we have time left to correct it, especially in the naval sphere; building ships takes years, and building fleets takes decades.
16
@donsanjino I agree, but the UN wasn't really meant to be a democracy. /shrug
12
@Pyrrhic. Don't feed the trolls, especially the inept ones. ;)

Speaking as an American, I feel bound to point out that even when we question the validity of our election results (spoiler warning: we ALWAYS do), we don't take up arms to redress the situation. Even in our Civil War, it was certain states wanting to leave the country, not impose their will by force. This is not to say our system is perfect. In fact, it's pretty damn messy. But that's the nature of democracy/republic, and you have to grit your teeth and bear with it. Especially when it's unpleasant. On the basis of the information presented here, my only attitude towards the heads of the Myanmar military is contempt.

Excellent video. But nobody likes to talk about the giant issue with electric cars: the electricity has to come from somewhere. Mostly, that means coal, oil, or nuclear.
12
Even if the West is unwilling to openly join the hostilities, I see no reason not to deploy our own "Little Green Men," i.e. NATO special-warfare operators stripped of identification and dressed in Ukrainian uniforms. Such forces would have a disproportionate positive impact, both in terms of actual fighting and of advice and morale-boosting to Ukraine's military. What's good for the bear is good for the eagle or the lion.

These smaller countries are presumably trying to take advantage of the tension between Washington and Beijing, similar to how the Third World basically financed itself (or rather, its governments) during the Cold War. But when doing this, it's important not to get too close to either side for a variety of reasons. It's a tightrope.

Looking at history, each Great World Power has about a century before someone else takes the top spot. If we say that the US took over from Great Britain in roughly 1945 (though that's highly debatable), then we have another 20 years or so before China takes over. Though Great Britain itself is an exception to the hundred-years rule, they were dominant for much longer. So who knows? What I do know is that we in the USA need to start massively expanding our Navy NOW if we are to have any hope of retaining our current hegemony. Building ships takes time.

I do think the narrator switch was a good idea, and Michael actually has a good voice IMHO. It is a bit gravelly, as people have said, but that's not a bad thing. That said, Mike, your delivery this episode was a bit flat. Not droning, but I would suggest developing more of a varied cadence. It makes for a better listening experience. This is something that simply takes practice, so just work on it as you narrate more videos. <3

Excellent work. If anybody wants further depth on this history, IMHO the definitive work is still William Schirer's "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich." Try to find the original non-condensed version. I've studied WWII most of my life, and my prime takeaways from the rise of the NSDAP are as follows: - Beware of anyone who participates in political process and does not respect the spirit of the rules. Marginalize such people if you can; they are profoundly corrosive to the political process they are subverting, regardless of their ideology and motivation. - Reason will not spontaneously break out if you do not speak up as loudly and forcefully as you can in opposition to crazy people. (Whatever kind of crazy.) - Wherever you are, it CAN happen there, and it WILL if you ever let it.

The great thing about precedents is that you can make your own. ;)

@mr.admr1016 It'd be more correct to say "all Nazis are fascists, but not all fascists are Nazis." Of course, it doesn't help that both terms are constantly misused to hell and back.
10
"Quantity has a quality all its own," as we Americans used to say of the Red Army etc.

@deankruse2891 The PRC fought several border actions that I would term small wars against the USSR back in the 70s (I think?). Not to mention the Korean War. They were kinda involved in that. Mao's only son got killed, along with a couple million other Chinese kids.
9
I'm the voice you hear, and I didn't write the script. I did take great pains to pronounce Kyiv correctly, though. Glad I got something right for a change. ^_^
9
Historically speaking, Finland is kinda Russia's kryptonite. So yeah, let's bring them into NATO. ^_^

Sources plz?

Excellent point. I wonder if there's any OSINT on that.

@bidenator9760 Clue in, buddy. Times have changed.

Fascinating. I'm going to watch through your back catalog, and sub. <3

21:00 - To say the Russian airline industry has "problems" is quite the understatement. If anyone's interested, Wendover Productions did an amazing deep-dive into what's happening: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SrTrpwzVt4g

There's always a bibliography attached to the scripts that Hubert sends me. I'm not sure if they're available to non-Patreons, though.

@GrandTheftChris It isn't German anymore. It's entire (fairly large) population is entirely ethnic Russians. Stalin saw to that. Nobody wants that headache inside their own borders.
6
@RrRr-or5tw I think you're overthinking it. All we need to do is send in our own "little green men" stripped of all personal identification and wearing Ukrainian armbands. As long as we can officially deny it, it's not grounds for war.
6
@Sodacacik That would make far too much sense.
6
This video was particularly interesting to narrate, as my late paternal grandfather served as a tank commander with the US forces during this war.
6
@elvisionario9466 Don't engage the bots. ;)

I've cast my write-in for Trump, but only because he's not the "looney left." I consider them more dangerous than the "looney right" at the moment. I have a degree in history, and actually living through such a period of instability has given me a totally new perspective on all this stuff I've read about over the years. The scary thing is that I know full well just how bad this could get, for everyone. 'Normal' Americans are caught between extremes, and if we can't reign these people in very bad things will happen. Not sure what exactly, and I really don't want to find out.
5
@annach109 Yeah, I know. I really do try, if it helps at all. The hardest part is finding a reliable reference for many place names or for people who aren't front-page famous.
5
@GoodTimesBadTimes I look forward to it! A channel called Covert Cabal (much more grounded than the username suggests) has great analyses on missile systems etc, you may want to check him out. :)

Without a VASTLY improved battery chemistry, EVs are a dead end. They're also substantially more dangerous than FFVs, specifically in regard to vehicle fires.

Protests in 69 cities? Nice. #sorrynotsorry

Superlative analysis. Clear, cogent, and comprehensive. Well done as always!
