New Englanders were on the front lines of Washington's army at least (and several others as well) for every battle of that war. Of particular note was John Glover's regiment, hailing from the town of Marblehead. For full context, I recommend reading the excellent book "Washington's Crossing" by David Hackett Fischer. Takes you from Bunker Hill through Trenton and Princeton and a bit after. If you want to know how things started, the prequel (so to speak) is entitled "Paul Revere's Ride." Now, as far as sports? Your metaphor is totally valid there. :)
