It was a quick trial, just to make sure that the new government did their due diligence and everything was by-the-book. After that, those two were lined up against a wall and shot, and then Romania abolished the death penalty. The Total Fertility Rate (births-per-woman, which is different from the birth rate, but that's off the subject) leapt up after the law was put in place, hence the notorious orphanages, but it came back down after a few years, as people found ways to get around it. Still, the situation was a mess. Have you ever seen the movie "4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days"? If you forget the title, search for "Romanian abortion movie." It's set in the 80s, when the regime was still in power (albeit in trouble), and it is riveting, about the quest for an illegal abortion, and the need to conceal it. Watch it!

With that said, most of the casualties in those riots were the work of cops, vigilantes (shooting & ramming), accelerationist Boogaloo types, and apolitical lumpen. In any case, there's a big difference between civil unrest and a coup attempt.

  28. Rape exceptions make it clear- it's about sex. They want to punish people for having sex; see all the language about "consequences." To be fair, some anti-choicers are honest enough to oppose rape exceptions; at least they're consistent.

  31. The woman in question, Rosanne Boyland, collapsed outside the tunnel where some of the fiercest fighting occurred. Her death has been attributed to both an overdose of amphetamines (perhaps she was getting wired as she headed into battle) and getting trampled (while holding a "Don't Tread on Me" flag).

  32. The prosecution was inept. They didn't prove it beyond a reasonable doubt, based on everything the jury was privy to. (Yes, it's possible that some on the jury were practicing jury nullification.) There's a lower threshold for guilt when it comes to civil trials.

  42.  @electricblue2920  No, you are dense if you can't grasp why such concepts as innocence don't apply to embryos. (Incidentally, in legalese, those judged to be not guilty are not necessarily innocent, but in the judgment of the jury and/or judge, the evidence against them did not meet the standard required for a conviction.) That bit about a rubber ball is actually apt, in that one can't judge a ball as being guilty or innocent, the same as with an embryo.
