  7.  @hhale  I don't disagree. However you have to look at it in context of the period. That was supposed to be the war that end all wars. The next 20 years were spent on folks pushing neutrality and reduce defense spending. Not to mention the Great Depression.

  18. You're kind of mixing names. The merchant Marine are the commercial shipping people. The Coast Guard previously the revenue cutter service took care of collecting the import duties and such on arriving ships. That's the connection.
