  7. You're looking at this out of context. Technology was moving ahead of tactics. The bolt action rifle was still a new thing. The idea of a man portable squad automatic weapon was just being invented here. All other machine guns of the time were for fix defensive use. They're making up things as they go along here.

  34. First, they were being taken out of active service by the Mid 1960's. Next, you needed 2 hands to work the launcher. Same for medics or Machine gunners. Thus they carried a pistol for close defense.
