  5. The problem is that the Russians living along the Finnish border in what was previously Finland would love to become Finnish nationals. It would, however, be prohibitively expensive for Finnish taxpayers to raise them up to the same standard of living -- even if that were possible. Poor and backward doesn't begin to describe the conditions there.

  23.  @burritosls  Perhaps we should ask the UN, as in its General Assembly, what it thinks about Russia annexing the Donbas and Crimea. Oh, we did already, in late 2022. The result was a resounding "no go", as expressed by 143 countries vs. 5. Out of those 5 ne'er-do-wells (including Russia of course), two evidently regretted their decision, because they still haven't diplomatically recognised the territories as Russian.

  31. My take is that China cynically favours a prolonged war. The weaker Russia becomes, the more dependent it is on China. The more dependent Russia is on China, the easier it is for China to exploit. Soon enough, Russia is China's jewel in the crown.

  38. There's still a small chance that Putin bombastically decides to pull out all the stops to save Russia from a crippling civil war (read: ensure his continued monopoly on power). The price will be a full withdrawal from Ukraine. He may believe that will save him and his political career.

  50. There's some of that, but an awful lot of Cold War-era weapons and near-end-of-life ammunition have been sent to assist Ukraine. A lot of the weaponry is Soviet in origin, too. If these weapons were conscious, they'd rejoice. The Western ones get to fulfil their destiny. The Soviet ones can draw solace from the fact that like their forebears, they're fighting Fascism.
