There’s a Forces article entitled “From HMS Cockchafer to HMS Pansy: Why would you call a ship that?!” For all of his accomplishments, Winston Churchill was perhaps not best known for his judgement in the naming of ships, having once been adamant that HMS Pitt would be a fitting title for a battleship. HMS Cherub definitely makes the list.

  10. Lee is the type of mind that would have excelled equally as a general, an aerospace leader or in just about any capacity. A singularly brilliant polymath with the even rarer qualities of common sense and knowing how to circumvent red tape.

  11. Ching Lee wouldn’t have made any of Scott’s mistakes. The gap between the two is like Michael Jordan against a junior high school bench warmer. I doubt Lee’s fleet would have had any of the other poor traits such as basically not communicating anything and poor radar interpretation skills.

  12. I’d like to see a documentary about someone exploiting its range of 8,000 nautical miles. That seems like an impossible range for a boat that small.

  19. Had to pause the Phillip episode to watch this. While Able Seacat Simon is still the most heroic of RN animals, Nuisance is just fantastic. Animals, but especially dogs, really do help boost quality of life.

  27. There’s something so hilarious to me about instances where one side tries to lure the enemy fleet out of port to bring them to battle and the enemy wants a fight but simply fails to realize you were there in time to come out for a battle both wanted.

  33. For me, Bruno Bianco was the highlight of the story. BTW, the story two of the Italian submariners who survived trapped in their sub 20+ hours only to die when surfacing because they failed to breath out was so sad.

  40. I’m surprised more navies didn’t use tactics like this or what Germany did with SMS Seeadler and its WWI and WWII merchant raiders, which proved so successful at basically zero cost.
