  4. I would argue Putin didn’t know he was risking his life for Ukraine or that any of this would happen. He’s been extremely cautious in the past. This was just a terrible calculation on his part. In the past he’s only gone after extremely small targets like Chechnya, a slice of Georgia, Tranisteria, etc.

  20. I love the man, but let’s not go crazy here. He stood up well under the IMMENSE pressure of speaking to all of congress and on national TV in a second language. So, purely from a rhetorical POV, it was never going to be a speech to compare with Lincoln, Churchill, MLK, JFK, etc. I think he wisely struck to a moderate. I think he missed some opportunities in his speech and during his stay, I think he made a couple minor optics mistakes. But, yeah, overall he did a really good job.

  23.  @pulsatingsausageboy2076  As I noted above, if you’re talking about the Donbas “conflict,” I agree that it was, in part, an energy related move. If you’re talking about 2022 as motivated by the energy/economic concerns, I find the argument possible but not probable. I wouldn’t it’s impossible because if the war had really lasted three days with minor blood shed, Germany would have found an excuse to keep using their cheap gas and minimize sanctions to the point of irrelevance.

  25.  @marcel84marcel  If you think we’ve given them close to “a lot” let alone “everything” you’re either ignorant as to what has been given or disingenuous. You probably saw absurd $ values assigned to our aid and thought that was what we were actually giving or its equivalent $ value in arms. Even had it been a true representation, it’s a tiny rounding error in terms of our defense budget let alone our national budget. You’re also not accounting for the fact that giving stuff was retired or retiring saves us hundreds-of-millions on scrapping costs (you can’t throw cluster bombs, rockets or mines in a garbage can) + cost of storage until there is capacity for its scrapping. You’re also not aware that due to the performance of just our old weaponry has lead to hundreds-of-billions in foreign arms orders, thousands of new jobs and subsidizes the expansion of our industrial base. Finally, not aiding Ukraine, could cost trillions over the next decade.

  27. Scholz and his party were owned by Russian energy interests and they’ve always looked down on the Baltic countries. They’ve only slowly begun to realize NO ONE will accept them resuming business w/🇷🇺 after the war and that’s why they’ve slowly begun to provide weapons.

  28.  @darthwiizius  I am aware of their anti-nuclear history. It extends even further back than Chernobyl and Fukushima. I just thought that Germans are generally well educated and would know by now that the Chernobyl disaster is literally impossible in other reactor designs and that with Fukushima, it’s almost as if they were TRYING to create the conditions for a nuclear disaster.

  39. The US needs to stop getting in the way of Sweden giving Gripens. Nothing the US will allow to be given will make anything close to the difference the Gripen would be, especially due to their ease of use, including simplicity of routine service, ability to land just about anywhere, maintenance, etc. It also has amazing ordnance options, especially the METEOR. Due to fears of a conflict with China, the US won’t allow any newer, long range missile to fall in the hands of Russia for fear China will get a hold of the tech which would make it much easier for them to defend against those missiles in the event of a war.

  40.  @laars0001  I meant to imply that the very real possibility he was saying those things for domestic political reasons is an example that we shouldn’t expect Russians who are actually looking to get into office to have viewpoints we love. Navalny was sainted by the press after his death, but even he was far from some shining ideal. But he was an actual politician and not like a dreamer with no chance. So, I don’t blame him for adjusting to the reality of the Russian public. It does no good if someone publicly states all the perfect views, but has no support in Russia and therefore can’t make any changes.

  41. Anti-Israeli propaganda had been ramping on Russian state TV in the run up to the incident, but the pogrom was an unintended consequence for the Kremlin. All war long 🇷🇺’s propaganda has been pushing citizens to become furious over a different traitor, a different Western country or institution, etc. The Jews were just supposed to be another enemy of the week. But they’re weren’t expecting viewers to do anything about it. That’s because the Kremlin is living a parallel existence where life has gone on as normal w/no friends or family lost. Yet Dagestan has lost so many sons to the war, they’re an open nerve: exhausted, scared and enraged and looking to vent. When they’re told who the enemy is, that was a release valve the Kremlin didn’t think about. Yet the masterminds are so detached they just think “what’s wrongwith you? The jews are only the enemy of the week!” This is not surprising as paradoxically, Russian leaders always assume their TV propaganda will work yet, at the same time, are constantly shocked by how easily the people are brainwashed by the TV. No doubt, this time they were thinking: “Hey, we’re at war to stop the Nazis, remember?”

  49. Jake doesn’t have the geopolitical chops to answer questions in that category. Or any awareness of history if he’s saying a Chechen uprising wouldn’t have an impact. Russia got their clocks cleaned during the Chechen war. Jake is good at curating headlines and good common sense answers to questions from casual observers of the war. Ben Hodges is great, but he’s mostly focused on doing a good of spreading the message on what Ukraine needs, why Russian can’t be trusted and why this war is so important. He’s not that in tune with every layer of the conflict.
