  3. I didn't realize they froze accounts for YEARS. If you know a lot about financial structures, the SAD THING is they could have and almost DID avoid the inflation COMPLETELY. They were going to back the roubles with gold reserves, and most politicians understood the concept, but a few western economists got in their ears about keynesian economics with fiat currencies, do when they ended up floating it against the rest of the world, it DROPPED LIKE A STONE. And that was the hyperinflation right there. Very unfortunate. Then between loosing their savings and being conned out of the asset distribution tokens they had... And needing to get SOMETHING FOR those asset tokens to buy food straight away.... they were left with nothing. It was a great shame because it was a terribly botched changeover in Russia and many areas. East Germany lost half the value of their money and COME OUT ONE OF THE BEST.

  4. here in australia they are pretty fussy on parcels. they either put them in the mail box or if you won't fit you have to pick them up within 5 days but SHOW ID. seriously. but then I have had property titles and silver bars sent in the mail. but even if it's just a book, you will need ID and signature to even get the parcel. And ID for any parcels SENT overseas. at times they scan big heaps of incoming foreign mail for drugs and even gun parts and certain knives.

  6. Over here in Australia a few years ago I saw these ads from an old Czech guy who had several Czech soviet era convertibles but he had some serious health problems and was trying to sell them. The price was high before his health got bad but in the end he was happy to sell them cheaply just so long as you restored them, not send them to scrap metal.

  7. Actually you missed a step in tobacco production. They used to cure tobacco which means basically put it in a high humidity warm area for a week. I have seen setups on the internet where they use polystyrene sheets and a space heater and a container of water and a coat hanger with a few small vents. It doesn't smell as bad and more like store bought tobacco.

  14. Mahindra was actually selling pickup trucks here in Australia. Like MANY indian vehicle manufacturers, it's more simple than most and the 4WD have dated hubs that look like they're from the 70s.

  18. Honestly, as a foreigner, from what I've seen if American knowledge of things outside the US.... I am not surprised that they'd think you're russian. To most of them it's all the same. I constantly see a need for them to reference EVERYTHING foreign to some type of US equivalent in order to make sense of it. Nothing can be WHAT IT IS without having an American equivalent to compare it to. Otherwise it's like they can't understand it. Even seen them assume greeks are Australian Natives (Australian Aboriginals).

  22. 8:46 NOT ACTUALLY A PHOTO. It's a giant painting and they zoom out. I had a number of postcards from the Soviet Union like that. Took me WEEKS TO REALIZE THAT they were actually paintings. But look at the taxi on the left and it becomes obvious. The external lines are strange.

  24. I get kefir here in Australia quite often. REALLY expensive, a type of hipster greenie thing. But because no one like that lives in my area, I keep seeing it in the discount section in the supermarket fridges. Usually less than half price with use by being a day or two away.

  26. Hmmm. I must admit my family has quite a bit from that era including expensive antiques. Peoples personal gold watches etc. Even PRIVATE CURRENCY which is a privately issued currency when Australia couldn't get enough actual cash despite its huge productivity and lots of gold.

In fact my sister has a psychology degree and says that the poorer or lower on the social ladder people are, THE PROUDER people are. Why would people not feel proud regardless of some slave owners in the south 200 years ago? Btw my sisters friend was married to an Inuit (northern indigenous people of Canada), and in case you thought Detroit was bad, you should see the drug problems and dumped rubbish and trashed houses on Inuit reservations. I gather Canadian Indian reservations aren't much better.

  33. ACTUALLY Robinson Crusoe..... was based on an actual English sailor. His island was somewhere down in South America. Maybe near Argentina I think. I have read.... he set himself up so good that he ended up going back after he was rescued and living there for 30 or 40 years.

  36. I have a still. Only used it once but it's fairly high capacity. I was looking at this big plastic drum I have today that I have been moving around my laundry that I was using for a roof leak 2 months ago. I was wondering when I bought it and now I remember. It was for making the moonshine. About 60 litre container and I got about 1.5 gallons of vodka at 58% purity (normal vodka is 38%). Still have most of the other gear. Big glass flasks and stuff.
