Now, that doesn't mean that the right way is appropriate for dealing with people who are fucked in the head and really belligerent. Violence, sometimes, really is the answer. Agreeable people need to learn that at a young age, but humans are raised primarily by both parents and teachers--people who, naturally, tend to be rather full of shit. That's a different discussion for a different time.

  13. Doing it of their own volition is best, too. Cycling, running/climbing, even skateboarding (which arguably isn't great for your health, it's like the athletic equivalent of smoking) are good for kids and adults alike provided you can do them without breaking your skull or your spine--or your bank account if you live in the USA. Gym class is not voluntary--it's school. Many kids forced into physical activity without choosing it themselves will probably refuse to do it for the rest of their lives simply for that reason, much the same way I loved reading as a little kid and can't be arsed to do it anymore. That sucks.

  18. No, human interpersonal conflict is almost always about winning. It's never about solving problems and reaching a solution that's mutually beneficial, because that means not having total power. It's not about solving problems, it's about CAUSING them in order to show power--to dominate and humiliate other people to show you're the biggest monkey at the zoo. If it were about reaching an optimal/beneficial/harmonious solution, the existence of authority/police would not be tolerated. It wouldn't be opposed, either. It would just be studiously ignored until it went away.

I hope I didn't come across as condescending toward your sense of human spirituality, it's just that organized religion is not, and never has been, about spirituality. It's about power over others--it's mind control by brainwashing. Religious people often have a hard time understanding that and when some of them do, they invariably end up abandoning their religion.

  32. The impression I get about Dr. Pete is that he's bright and articulate, but he's also really full of himself and is a major ass blowhard. I met him years back and he certainly has a way with words, that's for sure! But, he's every bit as much of a full-of-himself, head-up-ass egomaniac as any other mortal human with a chip on his shoulder and a tendency toward religious zealotry. I'm sure he's actually a decent guy and very thoughtful, but he's REALLY over the top with anger and judgmentalism.

It was far more important to keep my job, no go to jail and not be an asshole than it was to act like a fool and be shitfaced all the time. Now I'm pushing 50 soon and drink everyday. Making up for lost time that I wasted on being responsible, which got me nowhere in life
