@giorgosx5838 Although their real reason for invading the island probably wasn't simply to protect a minority on the island, you have to admit Greek Cypriots trying to go full Hitler mode and ethnically cleansing an entire minority group off the island surely gave them the pretext to do so no? I'd imagine back then they were also under this false illusion they can do anything they want and large powers would protect them, as we now know how wrong they were. I have a feeling this maritime dispute will eventually end the same way. It's surreal how a nation can continue to make the same mistakes over and over again. A majority group trying to exterminate a smaller minority group. Not exactly a good look, especially not when you're writing walls of text defending said massacres and ethnic cleansing. Not cool man.

@Iris and you forgot to mention these sanctions were being pushed by Greece and were rejected by the EU. Meaning they never came into force because too many EU nations disagreed with them. Funny how people leave out those "pesky facts."

@Tsubadai Khan. 1. I don't think these officers have too much contact with the Qataris. 2. When they do have contact, I'd imagine they wouldn't treat people protecting them like they would with a Pakistani guest worker. My guess is a lot of butt kissing, which probably confuses the Turkish soldiers because that master and servant dynamic doesn't really exist in their culture.

Unfortunately if you look at a simple map of Syria, you'll see the areas the Turkish military entered has no oil deposits. Hard to make oil magically appear where it doesn't exist, let a lone getting "a shit load" of cash from said non existent oil.

Until the 1900s a regional hegemon has always risen to rule that region. I'd imagine given enough time history will repeat itself, especially when oil becomes irrelevant and major global powers have zero interest in that region. Turkey and Iran will probably fight over which of them will control that entire region.

Actually Anatolia was inhabited by indigenous Anatolian tribes like the Hittites and other various ethnic groups. They were then invaded, conquered and assimilated by Greeks. Then the Turks came, invaded, conquered and assimilated them. According to your logic it's okay to invade, conquer and assimilate people if you're Greek but not okay if you're Turkic? If so can you kindly explain why this is so? Do your homework before making ridiculous claims.

@jimb8296 Oh I get it, so when the Greeks "colonized" Anatolia it was completely and utterly empty? Just like when America was discovered no one was here? Be a little realistic here Jim and stop making tall claims that no rational person will buy. So again your contention is that when group A invades, conquers and assimilates people that land is theirs. But when group B does it it's bad. You're going to have a hell of a hard to talking your way out of that one. The level of cognitive dissonance you're displaying is quite scary.

I'd imagine groups like the Hittites and other groups would disagree with you. But it's a general theme with all invaders and conquerors, they love to make the argument that no one was there before them.

@MinoanSitia So let me get this straight, you're claiming that your nation is strong and you're prepared to fight your neighbors? You're well within your rights to anger your neighbor with aggressive moves and breaking treaties, if you want to do that more power to you. What you can't do is grandstand, make aggressive moves and then expect the international community to defend you when your neighbor reacts. As long as you're prepared to stand behind your own actions, you're free to do anything. But I have this sneaking suspicion that isn't exactly how this is all going to work out.

@Wendell MVA, it would be absolutely insane for one nation to risk their treasure and their young men because a member nation in an organization decided to use islands as a weapon against their neighbor and their neighbor reacted. Greece is well within her rights to get aggressive on her neighbor if she wishes to do so but not within her rights to drag a ton of other people into her adventures.

@Elias Papadopoulous. The grey wolves as an organization have been non existence in that country since the 1980s. The only nationalistic party (largely a watered down version of nationalism) the MHP barely gets 10% of the vote. What in the world are you harping about? As far as Golden Dawn, if that is the type of government the people of Greece want, that is what they should have. They shouldn't use undemocratic methods like jailing their leaders or putting pressure on the party to prevent people from voting for them. You know the power bases of the nation are worried the people will vote for an ultra nationalist group or even a fascist one and therefore are forced to use undemocratic methods to prevent this.

I'm not sure it's a wise move for anyone to migrate to Sweden at this point. They've tried to join Nato, are going to get rejected and will have to deal with a hot skipping mad Russia. Not sure that is a country anyone should be keen on living in long term, it will probably become a suburb of Moscow in the next 15 years.
