Being accepted by decent people of whatever nationality is more important than being accepted as British by 'Albert'.

  4. These attitudes exist in lots of places. I'm from Zimbabwe and it's very much the case there. Blaming outsiders is easier than changing one's own culture and actions.

  6. Presumably a lot of people think lying is fine if it suits their politics - hence they elect liars. The excuse for this is "politicians are all liars anyhow" and so it spirals down ....

  7. ​ @reevs2153  as an example: Brits live in a "big country" where there is always someone whose job it is to do whatever. Zimbabweans need to have the mentality that if they don't sort out a problem then nobody will. i.e. if you see something broken it becomes your job to sort it out. There's nothing odd about this - it's just adaptation to the situation. In the UK if you take responsibility for things you end up annoying the people whose job it is. The state will also never look after you in Zim so one develops a very different attitude to not being in work or having debt.

  9. They/we have their own serious problems but they're obviously different. They cannot fully understand you guys because of leading a very different life - your views and behaviours can be seen but not fully empathised with because they have no idea what it's like to be you. I'm originally from Zimbabwe and have given up trying to explain myself or my attitudes as it doesn't work. From far away, someone else's culture/behaviour seems odd/comical but some English people don't realise yet that this applies to them also.

  11.  @ringtail1410  ... and Australians aren't Australian, Americans aren't American, people born in Africa like me shouldn't even exist..... You just fundamentally have a racial and tribal attitude which is not very British as Britain has has to bring together people who used to fight each other to make a bigger more successful country.

  17.  @evolassunglasses4673  No they don't - immigration is our only defence against exploitation - that we are not forced to accept the deal that the oligarchs offer. They can move their money to wherever production is cheapest with ease - but if exploited people can leave then that scheme stops working.

  19. The "advisoriness" is not really the issue - the issue is that the Conservative party looked to lose a lot of votes to UKip. Now it has killed off UKIP by adopting its policies. That's what the whole thing is about.

  20. I found that it depends on having a personalised explanation. One needs the explanation that fits you. In desperation at university on one topic I read every book in the library until one of them had an explanation that made it clear. The impossible became possible. Obviously I have never done a partial differential equation since then :-D There is also a motivation issue because if one cannot see why one is learning it then there's no oomph to get over the problems. Being taught by people who just like it for itself is useless.

  23. We're not weak. We have limitations as does everyone and they relate to what our economy can support. We still pack a punch in various areas. We have to fix what we can but nobody can have it all.

  27. You cannot understand mostly because you don't live in a violent place, particularly the US. I think you're 100% right to not like it but often I despair of explaining any aspect of life where I'm from (Zimbabwe) to Brits because they cannot mentally transport themselves to that situation - they have not even the concept of what it's like to be afraid. FWIW my Uncle in South Africa had his house robbed and the robbers beat him to death. Up the road from where I was staying at university there were AK-47 casings all over the road one day after robbers took a cash-in-transit van and it didn't even make the national news. Zimbabwe is less violent than SA if you keep out of politics but there's lots of robbery. You can see when the cops are no help or they're even the ones trying to do you harm that it would be nice not to be helpless. I think with parts of the US - you cannot grok them and they cannot grok you because neither has walked a mile in the other's shoes. As for the idiot in the picture, I think it's all political - looking for support from gun owners and NRA of course.

  28. Not learning what has been done before in your profession is a huge waste of time. In computers we have lots of people who don't get a degree and their whole career is about making all the mistakes they can learn not to make in 3 years at university. Forever afterwards they need to have basic concepts explained to them and they rebel against being told anything by someone who they feel they're competing with. This attitude of Mr Sutherland's is absolutely ridiculous. If you want a useful degree then don't do Art history but for goodness sake learn something relevant to your profession.

  29. @Noctis-lg7xp I get to see a lot of CVs without one. I have hired people without one and they haven't been a mistake. I've hired people with better quals who were really difficult. But.. if the other issues are equal, the person with a CS degree is easier to work with. I don't want to discourage people who cannot afford it. You can learn a lot on your own - it's just that people often don't know what they don't know - don't know what to try to pick up. I forgot a lot but I sort of know what I don't know and can go learn it again easily when I need it.

  31. @Oldie But Goodie we have laws to prevent speech that incites violence and to prevent libel. I think that's just reasonable. There are limits to all our freedoms when that freedom impinges on other people's freedom.

  40. So ....people chose Brexit first then thought up reasons and when those reasons get knocked they think up others. There's not that much point being exasperated since the choice wasn't based on the claimed logic at all. It's also the choice of people who don't think it will hurt them and don't care if it hurts anyone else. IOW you're dealing with selfishness which is an impossible thing to debate on - selfish people have no honour/decency/fellow feeling to grab onto in any debate. Our problem is that Brexit "precipitated' these people and made them a political unit which nobody wants to take on - Starmer is avoiding it. We would ideally find some way to split them - not easy - but the only other way is to really build a coalition of "sense" which will mean co-operating between groups that have not naturally been that friendly and finding some middle ground. Ex conservatives like me are going to have to bite down on our feelings and vote labour and it will be helpful if the leftmost bits of labour don't choose now to start a fight in the labour party.

  45. Negativity certainly won't get us back in. Also expecting people's attitudes to truly change is probably not very realistic. Being in is the best way to get overall attitudes to change by keeping young people involved and travelling and getting them to work abroad and so on. Older people won't change their ideas and their ideas will only go when they do.

  50. I think she's quite likely to be a bully and to have succeeded in life somewhat because of it. Perhaps she has not yet worked out that the other side are more than a match for her favoured tactic.
