The people who promoted Corbyn when there was no hope of getting him elected need to rethink their priorities. Obviously those who voted Conservative too but what can one really do about them? We need people who are a bit more in the middle that can attract an acceptable amount of the vote and not be a total disaster in power.

@mogznwaz i.e. you smelled which way the wind was blowing and trying to end up on the victorious side. Perhaps you need to have another conversion.

If you're older you may well own your house, so evil furriners who want to change everything are more real to you than some "ungrateful" young peoples' complaints about mortgages and jobs. We have an aging population and people are not very altruistic and think they're all right jack even though they probably aren't.
1
@sawtooth808 I doubt there's anyone that would hate him more than her.
1
@justonecornetto80 i.e. you're being forced to do what's decent for NI and you don't like it. You'd rather just $%^$%^& the Irish quietly and have everything your way.
1
i.e. if you did something dumb once then double down and do something even dumber FOR THE WIN!
1
If the lettuce can keep her name in the news, there are people who will vote for her. I think that's really what this is all about.
1
The cruel response is that if possible we shouldn't be using formula. A lot of things are missing from it like antibodies and stem cells and so on. I think ironically if people were able to not use it, their kids would be better off and that would truly threaten politicians like Widdecombe.
1
I don't like Truss either but why would one have nuclear weapons and then tell people that you don't intend to ever use them? That is a very ridiculous attitude which plays completely into the hands of people like Putin. He'll certainly use them if he thinks we won't.
1
but he was right about BJ and it is hard to hold out against all the people who thought BJ was great without some kind of mental defence if smugness is it, too bad.
1
It's your courage, IMO. The belief that you can cope even while you're chopping away at the foundations of your beliefs. Wanting to be "right" so much that you are prepared to admit being wrong even when it's humiliating.
1
@jooseppielleese7156 almost everyone thinks they're right. I think he often is and a lot of the people who are against him certainly have few doubts about themselves.
1
@leadoucet1432 it makes some of them feel superior that they "don't take themselves seriously" and when one suggests this pride is a case of taking yourself seriously the humour is all gone....:-) I think this is justice for all their mocking.
1
Hate speech is just stirring up riots and violence. We don't let people do that because we've had plenty of experience with it.
1
If you want someone to disappear you have to stop talking about them.
1
Only because he might damage our ability to act as allies.
1
@GiraffeCrab I'm from Zimbabwe so I know that one cannot overcome a tide of stupidity. It's important to try to survive it.
1
or that he has charm but not integrity...
1
Voters identify themselves with one side or another and then it can do no wrong.
1
They humiliate themselves.
1
diddums. Poor Tories...unable to do anything with their huge majorities.
1
It depends on what you're doing. A computer science degree absolutely is useful for example - people who don't have it are at a disadvantage and they're a pain in the neck to work with.
1
@rickylocock9068 It's leverage vs the EU doesn't seem very great.
1
@leanatale7251 desperately seeking sympathy for a bigoted attitude perhaps.
1
@arejaycee5484 I agree with you but I was trying to explain why there are other things we are not free to say.
1
@kevinjewitt6347 ...because it's greatly in line with our self interest and of course because we don't subscribe to Russian propaganda because we know how terrible it is like everything else they do.
1
@liul no, we forgive lots of things and unless you're dead it's never too late.
1
@chatham43 oh yes. We are not in Zimbabwe yet - there is no secret police or dictatorship to force us. You exiters had your time at the wheel and you crashed the car....
1
That's a very unfair comparison and, for exampe, if I criticised the British sense of humor I wouldn't expect to be popular at all because theres' always something that people in any country are proud of.
1
@SwillMith16 no it's about the English in general. I often hear complaining about how the Americans are this or that or how American tourists are awful and yet there are so many examples of any nation including the English behaving stupidly and badly and I note that it's Americans who get the worst of the criticism because they are the country whose power and status force themselves on our notice and make us feel small.
1
The Royal family have little real power and without them you'll just end up with a dodgy president like Trump, Erdogan, Putin or Mugabe. Then you'll complain about them but they will have obtained real power. The monarchy is a plug stuck in the hole so that nobody worse can fill it.
1
IMO it's all about the loss of power of the two major parties. Labour lost votes that went to the SNP making them weaker. The Conservatives started losing power to UKIP. The Labour response was Corbyn perhaps? The Tory response was to emulate UKIP. Extremists had to be courted. First past the post makes the stakes very high. Voters had a choice of the Cons or Corbyn. So they were really being presented with choices that were not ideal for them either way. We should not be attached to parties. We should ALL be swing voters. We should lower the stakes with PR so that a party doesn't have to flatter extremists.
1
Ultimately people voted the Conservatives in and a mess has been made and no politician can magic away the years of bad decisions. So of course people WILL suffer and have horrible things happen to them. I'm not going to vote for him but in a way I think it's disingenuous to pretend voters are all innocent. People have got themselves huge mortgages and others have been delighted to become rich on paper. I mention investing to someone and they immediately talk about spending money on the house instead of putting it into some new company that's creating jobs. NIMBY - a thing everyone with a house starts to believe in suddenly. In other words other people can suffer without housing but I'm not going to accept change in my area.
1
It's a disarming reply because we now cannot accuse him of personal enmity. We are listening to an intelligent politician who knows how to play the game. It's not a bad thing but it's worth seeing the moves for what they are. It might even be true, actually, but it's said this way for a reason.
