@LeeEisenstein My opinion on drugs is that addiction is a treatable disease and not a crime. Also, there are short-term benefits of allowing an addict to have the drug their body is craving. If they're under medical supervision, I don't see how harsh drug enforcement is beneficial to anyone.
The reason I mentioned opioids in particular is because access to the drugs was expanded several times over the last century in the US and Canada, and remained unchanged in the rest of the developed world. There's evidence that expanded access was more harmful to public health, productivity, and society as a whole.
If there were enough data points showing that complete drug decriminalization would prevent deaths/overdose from illicitly manufactured drug, and show evidence of lower substance abuse and improved mental health, then it would make sense to legalize them.
There seem to be more interest in expanded access to marijuana from people who enjoy it recrationally. That's the drug of choice for some people, but not
everyone. if you're needing it everyday, then that sounds a lot like addiction and dependence. The people addicted to harder drugs, need their too.
