The US is a capitalist dictatorship. If you refuse to facilitate big corporate profits, you get punished or even exterminated.
76
@bwofficial1776 How is being stuck in traffic for hours "freedom"? How is being forced to drive "freedom"?
21
Gender selection is a type of eugenics, and is guaranteed to lead to species extinction.
16
It is not that the US cannot solve poverty, it is that the US does not want to solve poverty because keeping poor people poor is just way too profitable.
10
It's simple. Billionaires are now considered enemies in the US.
9
And that statement is part of the problem.
9
LET. THEM. FAIL.
8
@cantaguyjustsay If Amtrak were a private company, it would go out of business, and inter-city passenger rail travel would end up being a thing of the past in the US.
7
Neither does Canada, and it seems Canada will never get high-speed rail. Here on Vancouver Island, we have actually lost all of our passenger rail service. We are stuck with roads for surface transport.
7
Step 1: Get rid of capitalism.
7
@crucisnh Yeah, nice try, stupid Trumpian.
7
Because big corporations rule the US with an iron fist.
7
Unfortunately, there is too much of a vested interest in car-centric society in the US and Canada.
6
@watsonnata9604 Acquired through birth, not hard work.
5
An apt saying would be in Europe, you can get nearly anywhere without a car, while in North America, you can get nearly nowhere without a car.
5
No, America has death care, not health care.
5
Except in most of the US, it is just not viable to get around in any way other than in a car.
5
It is not mandated by law per se, it is mandated by force of the ultra-rich.
4
Can anyone say "vicious cycle"?
4
Only because Americans are force-fed corporate propaganda opposing Canadian-style health care in the US.
4
Not to mention the fact that automakers are vehemently opposed to walkable downtowns with good public transport. And it is capitalism that has demonized public transport in most of the US, because capitalism sees public transport as unfairly competing with cars, a product that can be sold en masse for big corporate profits.
4
@Vacouryard Well, unfortunately, people living in the vast majority of the US have no viable option to get around but to drive.
4
Because the US is a capitalist dictatorship! Wake up!!!
4
@tellucas Which is why the automakers and airlines will pull out all the stops to suppress high-speed rail in the US, in order to keep Americans driving and/or flying.
4
@donaldkasper8346 So you are basically just saying "shut up and drive"? Mother Nature is not going to like that kind of stance from you or anyone else. And you know what else gobbles up a lot of elevated concrete? Interstate ramps and flyovers.
3
@kevint9566 And the auto manufacturers. And the airlines.
3
@markhemsworth2670 Everything has its price. Subsidized gasoline contributes to more greenhouse gas emissions.
3
Because capitalism profits off of a stupid population.
3
@wishiknewaname9307 No one advocates for banning cars. But the ultra-rich bitterly advocate for banning all forms of surface transport other than the car.
3
@xAnAngelOfDeathx "Greed reigns supreme with the idiots that oppose universal healthcare in the US." But those idiots also have all the power. They rule the US with an iron fist.
3
@Zenrei940 So you are in favour of accelerating humanity towards extinction, huh?
3
Those forces are all financial predators.
3
@Lindenlc10 Stock buybacks and executive bonuses.
3
It does NOT work that way. Public transit is NOT supposed to be profitable. Only carbrains would argue otherwise. Trying to make public transit profitable will only succeed in putting more cars on the road. You need to realize that taxation tries to benefit society as a whole. But unfortunately, the ultra-rich do not want to share their benefits because they do not want to share their wealth.
3
@fatdoi003 Neither do car companies or fossil fuel companies.
2
And I live on Vancouver Island and we do not have passenger train service at all anymore. EVERYONE on this island who wants to travel has to drive.
2
@TohaBgood2 Unfortunately, it's been said that the E&N Railway is in too poor a condition to run passenger services on anymore, and it is too expensive to repair.
2
@samsonsoturian6013 More fossil fuels, huh?
2
@Neville60001 Nuclear power has unfortunately become too heavily stigmatized.
2
@internetpointsbank Yeah, and then look at the map of the HSR network in China. China's land area is larger than that of the US.
2
@brantkim Flights are bad for the climate compared to high-speed rail.
2
Nice try, but the only thing about Internet access that will increase in the US is its price.
2
@nonyafkinbznes1420 Way to drink the capitalist Kool-Aid there, buddy...
2
@philipanderegg5973 But that is exactly what the automakers do not want. Automakers see improved public transport as a threat to their market and their bottom lines, so they are going to fight bitterly, tooth and nail, to keep people in North America behind the wheel.
2
This is why I have a standing travel warning against the US. Do not go to the US for any reason.
2
Because capitalism wanted everyone driving.
2
@wlonsdale1 Pot calling the kettle black. The US is full of stupidity.
2
And in Canada, and in Latin America, and in Asia, and even in Australia.
2
@msheidiho2004 If you get a big medical bill, you know what you do? REFUSE TO PAY IT. If a collection agency calls, then get angry and yell at the agent until he or she gets off the line. TAKE A STAND. FIGHT BACK.
2
@faustinpippin9208 Boy are you carbrained...
