  8. Haha yes I see!  If I do get the A7 and I'm ever in the position to get the back end heading around to meet me, I won't have a clue what to do other than pray! I'm not against RWD per  se but I do get a bit irritated by bandwagon jumpers who say its the only way to drive fast or to have fun. I picked up my last new car from the factory in Germany and drove it home via Cuxhaven and ferry to Harwich. The German guy who accompanied me to the port described the way to get the best out of a Quattro Performance Audi he said many people try to drive them the same as RWD but they end up in terminal understeer and then blame the car, he said its a different method and no less fun when you master it especially when have as he put it "so much power to catapult you out ze corner early". I didn't really get what he meant until I had an opportunity to front passenger in a 2014 RS6 with an owner who had been on an Audi performance driving course, (I think it was part of the buying package) but anyone who could say it was dull or unexciting would have to be dead from the neck up!  He said he could induce 4 wheel drift a bit like Tiff managed on the R8. I declined the opportunity to test his assertion as I only had one pair of boxers with me, if you know what I mean! I share your frustration at some of the idiots depositing their XBOX experiences here as informed comment, its a shame because real Car enthusiasts in my experience discuss, debate and learn from one another, they don't abuse.

  24. Just seen this and was hoping for a unbiased appraisal but should have known better, expecting journalistic integrity from autoexpress. Consistent as usual though, populated by Bavarian psycophants. This guy just set out to rubbish the Audi. These Cars are designed to get you point to point very rapidly in all conditions. What they should have done is see if the Beemer could have kept up with the RS on those roads. I doubt that the Beemer would have stayed in touch and I suggest that the reviewer may not have enjoyed the "fun driving experience" so much! If going sideways at every bend, camber or corner, drawing lottery numbers to avoid trees, ditches and more importantly oncoming 40 tonners represents the epitomy of driving dynamics, then we have come no further than beam axle American muscle car.Come on AE get some balance. Also the exterior and interior comparisons are ridiculous, the consensus out there generally accepts Audi interiors represent the state of the art in materials, design, fit and finish. Both Cars are distinctive to look at although the sloping back of the RS is more interesting and edgy. The Beemer's look has been around for ages although it still is one of the more interesting BM's to look at. Both Cars represent the very best of European tech out there and deserved a more intelligent appraisal, just a shame AE again sunk back into Beemer comfort mode and missed another opportunity to give people like me who can only aspire to own such vehicles, a true, rich competent account of the privilage of driving such brilliant Cars.

  36. Having driven one now, been close up and personal and scrutinized the lines, put them side by side and you see the styling differences immediately, the one I tried had Matrix lighting which adds something to the front end stance the car looks longer and wider. definitely a family resemblence but different with its own character. a bit like my kids really, they look like me but have thier own traits and identity and are verry individual on the inside. Is this such a bad thing. The interior of the SLine TDI  I got to drive is a masterpiece and crushes the nearest precieveable competitor which is probably the Merc; which is a mess in comparison. With the full electronic dash and  ambient light pack combined with the leather SLine embossed seating it is truly in a different league and makes the Jag XE look like some dated and old already. My only criticism is Audi missed a trick in not retaining the disappearing infotainment screen. It would have given another dimension to the already clean lines to be able to put it away when not in use. I guess many people "Reps" included will love it on and visible all the time but I like the choice of even more subtelty. The 3.0 lower powered TDI with Auto that I tried is a match made in heaven, power delivery is immdeiate and punchy enough to bring a smile to your chops and is so smooth you'd be fooled into beliieving this was a larger petrol engine, the only clue being cold start and standing right by the bonnet " Hood to my US friends" This car is so eerily quiet and is making a compelling arguement to me having driven a new 320d as a reference point. The Audi takes refinement, fit and finish to a bar that BMW are going to find difficult to reach at this price point. Yes you may argue that the BMW is better sorted for fun on the track but I would argue this car is leaps and bounds better on the road as a complete package it commanded my respect. Didnt like the B&O stereo in my opinion it shouts too much and will be diffcult to enjoy on longer journeys so savings to be made there me thinks. All in all its now at the top of my shopping list for a decision by the end of Feb. Didnt get to drive the Avant but it looked nice in Red but wouldnt want that colour.

  47. Sorry I simply don't understand your point. I very recently visited an Audi Dealer show room because I am looking at buying mid sized exec saloon or Avant possibly the new A4 or 3 series, any way they had the new R8 in the show room right next to the previous model although this was a convertible. The differences between old and new are extensive and substantial to all aspects of the car. All the journo's have been saying the old R8 was starting to show its age, although it was a masterpiece of its time, the new one eclipses it in all ways. Lets face it, Audi couldn't please all of the people all of the time with this new R8 but I can tell you straight up, seeing one in the flesh and sitting in it, blew me away. It looked more purposeful and menacing but at the same time had an approachable character that made you want to look at it from every angle and what was apparent from first contact with the car, is how well screwed together it is, looking under the engine cover and closely at the interior and panel fit and finish, it really is beautifully put toegther. The brief for Audi for the new R8 was that the car needed to be sufficiently different from the outgoing model but at the same time build on its heritage. For me it has achieved this in spades and more importantly, every test review I have read say the same thing, it is a car with stunning performance which is accessible to the everyday driver but also challlenges the experts on both road and track and represents a signifcant performance evolution over the old car. I get it if you don't like Audi's but really this car cannot be denied that it is up there with the very best hyper performance cars of its generation. Also less importantly but worth mentioning is that its comparatively brilliant value for money.
