  5. This is one of the main reasons the Carl Gustav is amazing. Everything from airburst, thermobaric, to bunk buster rounds. It's essential in trench warfare.

  6. Honestly, though, the M2 needs to be replaced with a lighter and more accurate gun. We need a gun with similar features to the Kord, with a buttstock, ability to employ a bipod, better ability to affix optics, and a standard style trigger group. Think .50 Cal m240

  7. They forbid the use of them outside the wire in combat zones after about 2012. We've been using the M-ATV. Both kinda suck for different reasons. I hope this is better, as it seems to be the best parts of both. The ironic thing is that the original humvee was light, like you said. Now, the army and Marines have been fielding light tactical vehicles that essentially do what the original humvee did with a better engine and suspension. Vehicles like the Flyer 60 and 72.

  12.  @TheWorldEnd2  The Ontos, specifically, was retired in the early 1970s completely. The 90mm Recoiless was used until the 90s. Now, we use the 84mm Carl Gustav, but that a man portable gun.

  15.  @catcherintheair  We carry Gustav's in every platoon in my division. Just like mortar rounds, MG ammo, or any other heavy weapon ammo, can be distributed throughout the platoon. Just have every soldier carry 100 rounds of 7.62 (2.4 kilos) and one round of 84 mm (3.2 kg). Total weight only adds 5.5 kilos (12.3 pounds).

  17. I would imagine they can't do it firing max range, but maybe pretty accurate to several km's, especially in direct fire Id be interested to see what the dispersion is while moving, too. It would definitely make it more difficult for S&R platforms and counter-battery to pin them down

  19. I think the lack of a powered turret holds it back between those other vehicles. Cranking handles to get on target with no stabilization can be a bear of a task. I would love to see a modernized version using aluminum and composite armor, a . 50 cal Kord on an RWS, with a Kornet launcher. Thermals, smoke launchers, drone launching platform, and a crew of 3 with 2 dismounts. The shape and configuration of the vehicle makes sense, it just needs to be modernized. Another great scout car is the Panhard VBL similar capabilities, but lighter, faster, and more modern.

  22. Don't forget there's something such as amrams- missiles designed to hit radars and jammers. Purpose designed loitering drones they do the same thing soon. Use EW, get an explosive kamikaze drone on your head. Also, drones are layered. Ground UGVs- 1. Ground drones with claymores 2. Ground drones with antitank mines 3.missile and machine gun armed ground drones 4. Recon and radio repeater drones 5. Engineer drones for mine clearance 6. Supply drones carrying food, ammo, water, and other goodies to troops 7. Patrol drones for anti drone defense 8. Antiarcraft drones networked together that are on sentry duty and periodically change locations UAVs- 1. Micro copters at squad level for recon 2. Platoon level quad copters for overwatch and targeting 3. FPV drones with AT/AP warheads to knock out bunkers, armored vehicles, and HVTs 4. Loitering drones for long range targets 5. Drone defense copters with ramming ability for hitting small drones plus explosives if helicopters are in the area 6. Anti fighter drones with rocket assisted terminal attack phase for hitting low flying aircraft 7. Radar and jammer seeking drones 8. Long range stealth loitering munitions for theater based operations I'm GWOT, we were constantly aware of the IED threat. The saying was that the design and implementation of IEDs were only limited by the imagination. This is next level IEDs, except now, they come at you at 100 mph

  23.  @TheWorldEnd2  Do you have anything about the Ontos being used after 1970? Yes, I specifically mentioned the M3. I've used one on Afghanistan in Kunar Provence. The M67 90mm was also used by my division in limited numbers in Afghanistan on my first deployment there. The M40 105mm RC was phased out when the TOW came online and hasn't been used since. This video is about the Ontos, not Recoiless guns in general.

  24. Best part of the MG42 weapon system was the Lafayette tripod. Very flexible, could be adjusted for height, fired with a periscope, and worked on uneven ground. Doubled the range of the gun.

  28. Matt, the US military stopped using Humvees in combat over 7 years ago. They've been replaced by mraps. The Humvee is now only used in training.

It's a schoolhouse term in the army. Every single school has one, even the war college. Did not ever go to PLDC, BNCOC, ANCOC or Amy schools in the army or did you not pay attention to what was going on? I made Commendant's list in PLDC. Do you think that was made up?

  37.  @pultsari9036  I agree. They are all needed. The Javelin is also easily man portable, has a way bigger warhead, is fire and forget, and has top attack capability. The AT4, Gustav, and Javelin should all be used by a company at the same time in anti armor ambush.

  39.  @nivek2192  Why would it be watered down? Same round, same length and taper of barrel, yet reduced weight, improved optics mount and fire controls. What do you THINK I was talking about? I wouldn't call the Kord a "watered down 50 Cal". What can it do better than an m240? How about shoot a 650 grain bullet at 2900 fps with over 4 times the energy and over 3 times the penetration of armor and hard barriers, all at twice the range. We already use the M2. It's time to make it more shootable. On unstable gunnery, it's very difficult to hit targets at even moderate distances unless locked in with a T&E with the M2. Giving the gun a proper buttstock and optics mount will allow gunners a better chance of hitting while free gunning. I don't understand the resistance to modernizing the heavy machinegun. We modernized the 1917 machinegun, to the 1919, and eventually adopted proper GPMGs. The 50 can be modernized to the same degree, allowing a more accurate, lighter, and easier to shoot HMG. It's a no brainier and something the US military has been promising for decades to the infantry.

  43.  @lesaustion  Not THESE Recoiless rifles. THESE Recoiless rifles were replaced by the TOW in 1970. Yes, we use different ones today, but no, the 105mm RR was not used in the Iraq war by anyone. That's what I'm talking about, you smartass. We use an 84mm, which besides also being an recoiless gun, has not one thing in common with the M40.

  44. RPGs use 2 motors. One gets it out of the launcher, and then the 2nd is a booster that drives it down range. The tube is only 40mm and smoothbore, with no rifling.
