The Lithuanian experts who have never been wrong (at least so far) say it was a "dress rehearsal" by Prigozhin and a secret associate of his, probably a Kremlin insider. The insider has some leverage over Putin and wants to overthrow him. So he wanted to test Putin's army's strength and unity for a future palace coup. To do that, he associated himself with (or, just paid) Prigozhin to use his genuine beef with the Ministry of Defence and fear for his life and business (he was going to be ousted by the MoD) to stage a grand uprising. Meanwhile, Mr. X used his leverage on Putin to make him not punish Prigozhin. What's happening now are behind-the-curtain talks, deals, threats, blackmail etc. between Putin, Mr. X, Prigozhin, Lukashenko and who knows who else.
