waxed link How curious it is that you believe the MSM is biased to the right! I'm very right-wing and it seems exactly the opposite to me! I have to go all the way to Sky News Australia to get coverage untainted by socialist self-righteousness and pomposity.

Do you include the people of Donbass, oppressed by Ukrainian Nazis since the 1990s and actually murdered and tortured by them since 2014?
13
You think America is a democracy???
12
Where does this 70,000 figure come from? According the Office of National Statistics 51, 264 people have died with Covid mentioned on their death certificates up until July 17. More precise definition is now being sought and the number of deaths where Covid 19 may have been an underlying cause is likely to be less. The government has made an utter balls up of dealing with this -as have most governments. But the figures are all over the place. Where do these extra 18,000 come from? Are they heart and cancer patients who have died due to lack of treatment? I only ask because I'd like to know.
12
How wonderful! As right-wing conservative I tune into this channel to find people to argue with or, failing that, to mock. Now I find someone who intelligently and articulately expresses views which I cannot help but endorse from the bottom of my heart.
12
Sure. Let rural small town America be ruled by city-dwellers, eh?
10
STOP PRESS: The Office of National Statistics has just released provisional death figures from all causes for July. There were 38,179 deaths registered That is 1,435 LESS than in July 2019. Deaths where Covid 19 was an UNDERLYING cause amounted to 2.6% of the total.

We get the journalism we deserve. The media survives by reflecting human instincts - not by attempting to shape them, as seems to be suggested here. The instinct for war cannot be overcome by logic nor shaped by reason. It is bred in the bone. Mankind is ruled by fear, not love.
9
History is history. How about some examples of systemic racism in the 21st century?
8
Professor Ashton mentioned World War II where millions of lives were lost and huge sacrifices made in order to preserve freedom. The Covid 19 pandemic was nothing like that. It was a novel covid which took a bite of a few tens of thousands of almost exclusively very elderly and very frail people who had insufficient resistance to its worst excesses. I use the past tense deliberately. The pandemic has been over in this country at least since June and what we are experiencing now is merely its endemic phase in which it has taken over as the top killer respiratory infection of the winter season. Seasonal death rates are close to normal. The only unusual increases appear to be among younger age groups and deaths at home. It is very possible that these anomalies will eventually be traced back to the negative effects of lockdowns. Death is always with us. It cannot be legislated against. We should Keep Calm and Carry On. Collapsing into hysteria has done more harm than good.
8
So good! And this war was totally avoidable too. It could end now if Ukraine agreed to Russia's entirely reasonable demands - and wouldn't even involve the shame of surrender.
7
Yeah, and who started it?
7
ujean56 ...stick you head in the sand! Put your fingers in your ears and go "wibble wibble wibble"! Surrender all pretensions to reasoned thought! Listen only to things that make you feel warm and fluffy inside! Accept it when you are told you are too poor and stupid and working-class to be able exercise critical judgement! Stay true to Socialism!
7
waxed link Which is a great deal better than them being aided and abetted by biased left-wing media. If the people in power read the Guardian we would all be dead by now. In Britain we are having a quiet revolution and sending socialism to its long-awaited rest. That nice Mr Murdoch has played very little part in this I do assure you. We reaiised ourselves what a bunch of self-righteous, patronising pricks the Labour party are all by ourselves, just by listening to them.
7
It's dishonest. Using old footage of the situation in the Mediterranean involving whole families fleeing imminent threat of death has nothing to do with the situation in the English Channel today where fit, healthy and well-off young men are coming to this country in search of adventure and improved economic circumstances. And condemning rich people for being rich is daft. Each one of these people provides a livelihood for literally thousands of others -from the pilots of their Lear jets down to the people who clean their offices. The politics of envy is a busted flush.
6
Geffo Me But the Guardian and the Independent do exactly the same thing!
6
Way off beam again. The testing system is woefully inaccurate and even dangerous. The "second" wave fits exactly with the Gomperz Curve of such epidemics when an initial surge of cases and deaths goes into a steep decline followed by a much smaller peak which then flattens out into a plateau before herd immunity is achieved. Half-arsed restriction measures do absolutely nothing to prevent or advance this. Nature is culling the old and the frail as it always does.
6
Ian Graves You're an idiot, and brainwashed too. I don't need Murdoch and Tory billionaires to tell me how to think. I look at Corbyn and his support for the IRA and anti-Israel terrorist groups. I see Labour conferences where the Union flag is scorned and the Palestinian flag is waved instead, I hear Corbyn outline his insane, suicidal pipe-dream policies and I see my country being led into a cesspit. I don't even READ mainstream newspapers and rarely watch mainstream TV. I scour the Internet, giving everyone a chance to convince me. If Socialism has convinced you then you are either incredibly naive or the victim of some weird guilt-complex.And also an idiot.
6
It continues to astonish me how today's so-called socialists continue to support American imperialism. You really are the running dogs of capitalism!
6
I'm afraid you're asking for your money back long, long after the expiry date. I am not responsible for the actions of my parents and grandparents. In any case my ancestors were up in the rigging of the slave ships and dying at much the same rate as the slaves in the holds. Either that or they were agricultural labourers living in conditions not dissimilar to those on sugar plantations. Just a few generations previously, under the feudal system, they would have been no different at all. It's time to put race behind us. Miscegenation not reparation is the answer, and it is one which will win through in the end. In the meantime let's stop harping on about the past and get on with trying to live together as human beings.
6
Fortunately the proof of the pudding will be in the eating. Have large-scale gatherings resulted in increases in deaths and hospitalisations No. Will this one? No. It was a joy to see the 99% throwing off their shackles. While dour control-freak Lefties mourn the loss of this opportunity to restrict liberty, those of us who treasure freedom can get on with it. The disease has done its worst. Just look at the graphs. Just examine the statistics. Should the lives of healthy young people be ruined just to give the frail and elderly a few more months or weeks of life? No. Old farts like Ashton are the ones who are being selfish. If you are afraid of Covid lock yourself up somewhere. Take some hydroxychloroquine if you can get it. And shut up. Teacher, leave those kids alone.

What's up? For once I try to praise DDN and the comments have gone haywire. Honestly though although I generally find so, so much to disagree with here this lady is correct in everything she says -and she says it so very well. Socialism might even have a future with minds like hers at the forefront.
5
Dominic Cummings is way, way down in the pecking order. When I put on my tinfoil hat I see a virus which kills only the elderly and the unproductive, followed by a mandatory vaccine which ensures infertility in a selected proportion of the population. Great minds and great souls with vast wealth and resources are thus ensuring the future of mankind. We are indeed blessed.
5
So far sea levels aren't rising. ice-caps aren't melting and all temperature records prior to around 1970 have been dismissed as unreliable. Coronvirus clearly kills only the frail and the elderly or those subject to multiple re-infection. and the actual death and hospitalisation rate is minute. These seem to be observable facts. The conspiracy is the one which uses corrupt science to create a world of lies and to advance an agenda of globalisation and state control. And you can stick it where the sun don't shine.
5
Interesting choice of words. The "pale" was originally the fortifications set up outside English enclaves in Ireland. "Beyond the pale" meant you were a Paddy bogtrotter, not a member of the ruling, imperial class. The Tories are very much inside the pale. You are beyond it
5
Paul Downie They don't see anything. They're just doing what their left-wing loony teachers tell them.
5
I hate to be picky, but does it mention funds given to BLM or to ensure the elections of mayors and DA's in US cities where these officials have encouraged violent BLM and Antifa riots, and where these officials have freed rioters caught burning and looting? I only ask because I'd like to know.
5
Is turning the other cheek really an option for Israel at this point? Hamas is ultimately responsible for this suffering - both Israeli and Arab.
5
There is far more media hype in favour of the man-made climate change hypothesis than there is against it.
5
Simon Colbeck Are we living on the same planet? I don't read the Sun or the Mail and when I watch the BBC it seems so riddled with LEFT-WING bias that I find myself in support of the RIGHT-WINGERS calling for the licence fee to be abolished. UKIP called for this because of BBC bias. The right-wing populist channels I watch call for its abolition for this very reason. What has the BBC done to upset all you guys?
5
Wot?

An insane paranoid rant - but fun. Get real kid.
4
@alanmarr3323 I once had a gardener who used to sit in the potting shed raving on in a similar manner. I had to sack him.
4
@fredfredrickson5436 I don't know. I find it hard enough to identify the nature of problems. Coming up with solutions is something that doesn't sit that well with me. I suppose I would have to say national sovereignty seems the best way to combat globalism, or at least counteract its worst excesses. Small units of government, independent but interacting with each other as reasonably as possible is as good a way of conducting human affairs as any, it seems to me. As to imperialist expansion the time for that has probably come to an end, at least in the old meaning of the term. Today's empires are going to be financial rather than territorial, and achieved through manipulation rather than direct conquest. Soros is building his using reflexivity and bribery, and the Chinese are building theirs by buying real estate and infiltrating institutions like the UN. Competition without regulation is often dangerous, but it is difficult to see who will police the brave new world.
4
The NHS is not at breaking point. Covid 19 is no worse than many of the seasonal influenzas it has replaced. It is shameful that this illness is being used as a political weapon. The reality is that thousands of babies and young children in third world countries are dying of malnutrition due to worldwide economic downturn created by lockdown policies. In the UK the largest single group of people to die are those aged 90 and above. Less than 1,000 under the age of 45 have done so. Check the ONS website if you don't believe me. Teachers who refuse to teach children on the offchance that they will catch Covid are cowards. So are the health workers whose absenteeism is largely responsible for whatever pressures the NHS currently faces. Neither group is especially vulnerable . Proportionately, bus drivers and taxi drivers are more at risk of death or serious outcomes.
4
Yes, but what's WRONG with this? And where does the secrecy come in? This really is a total non-story.
4
MsimpK16 Has it ever occurred to you that climate change hysteria comes very much into the scenario you have outlined? Millions believe that the poles are melting when they are not or that islands are being drowned when they are not, or that reefs are dying when they are not. Compared with these huge lies currently being promoted for political ends tittle-tattle about Corbyn is neither here nor there.
4
He's setting about it in a funny way by killing off mainly old people who are beyond reproductive age and were due to die soon anyway. Of course there all these vaccines..... What a surprise it would be should it turn out that they make a certain proportion of the population sterile!
4
Another mixed bowl of fruit from Rambling John. The idea that it is any way acceptable for the government to condone and support a criminal enterprise has to be dismissed out of hand. The idea that the government is using it as a "distraction" is equally ludicrous. Farage has had to drag them out of their beds to get down to Dover and face this embarrassment. I'm sure they would very much have preferred to go on pretending it wasn't happening.
4
As a pensioner I am happy to be put at risk if this helps rescue the economy and speeds up herd immunity. After all, Covid 19 is just one of the things lining up to get me - and pretty low down on the list, what's more.
4
Their freedom?
4
@VorosMedve In terms of modern thinking perhaps. But the money was not compensation, it was simply a means by which the British government bought the slaves from their owners - and then freed them.
4
@redlightmax The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Which is not a society. A society is a small group of people who get together to share a common interest - such as model trains or knitting.
4
@bravoalley228 The same applies but more so. The vast majority of those who have died have been way beyond an age to reproduce.
3
With all due respect, the refugees shown in the heartrending footage shot in the Mediterranean several years ago have little relation to the fit, healthy and 80% young male occupants of the rubber dinghies, who are of generally concealed origin and can afford to pay thousands of Euros to people-traffickers and have enough left over to buy a smartphone and expensive trainers. They might not, however, be rich enough to offer employment to others, as as do the evil billionaires you scorn so vehemently.
3
Whatever your politics you must agree that there is sufficient circumstantial evidence of substantial fraud in this election to warrant a full and independent judicial enquiry. Failure to do so will result is a cloud of doubt hanging forever over the Biden presidency. It must be done. At the very least failure to do so could very well result in a case being made for Americans to be legally justified in ignoring the edicts of a potentially illegal administration.
3
@pdp977 Forty hours or so of sworn testimony, video recordings and statistical analysis presented to various state senate hearings in recent weeks? The differences between evidence, allegation and proof are many, subtle and varied. They can only be determined by judicial enquiry and this has not occurred.
3
Good try. But of course all governments behave this way when confronted by an unpredicted threat. Fortunately Britain still hasn't yet quite become crippled by a blame-shifting socialist bureaucracy. Viruses do not behave quite in the same way as radiation, do they? They evolve to survive and so stronger strains that kill their hosts die out while those which not kill survive and prosper, much like Covid 19's cousin the common cold. The figures have certainly been fudged - but upward rather than downward. The so called Covid-related deaths include Covid as one of three possible contributors. The contribution is often rather tenuous. If I were to become so incensed by the lying propaganda being put out by the media and burst into a TV studio and beat an offending journalist to death with an iron bar it could well be recorded as a coronavirus related death. Quite rightly in this instance.
3
You can fiddle with the details, but you cannot excuse the true horror of what happened.
3
@Dellboy56 What reprisals? Israel is not taking reprisals. It is more than that.
