  1. When it comes to fog lights, they’re not there to increase lighting. They’re there to cut through fog. For that, the yellower the light, the better, and the more diffused the light, the better, so LEDs are fine, but only if they’re yellow and diffused. Otherwise you’re better off with the incandescent bulbs. Also, a correction on the engine: the 2.5 comes with direct and port injection. It’s an important caveat because this type of engine is rare and eliminates the carbon build-up issues that all direct injection engines have. Finally, a correction on the transmission: It does not have a CVT transmission. It has what’s called an eCVT transmission. Those are entirely different than your regular CVTs. They don’t have comes and pulleys and belts/chains. They work with planetary gears. Very reliable. Also, the CX5 Turbo has been clocked with a slightly (less than 1 second difference) slower 0-60mph than this Rav4 Hybrid.

TheBen Dover Supposedly, there is a throttle and transmission re-map in Sport, which tends to send the gasoline engine into higher RPMs, quicker, and it automatically engages the electric motors and gasoline engine from the start. I’m guessing that in Eco or Normal modes you rarely see or hear the engine go above 3,000 rpms, making it nice and quiet 90% of the time. The trade-off of the hybrid is its reduced AWD performance. This is no off-roader. It should do fine in the snow, though you will see and feel lots of front wheel slippage. Since there’s no mechanical link between the axles, Toyota allows for that slippage as it does not affect the torque sent to the rear. The traction control is a bit light. This one is just for light to medium snow. I wouldn’t try plowing out of 3 feet in it. There just isn’t as much torque in the back. Winter tires are of course recommended.

  7. Much better gas mileage, rear seat space, cargo space and reliability with the Rav4 hybrid. Hybrids drive far more smoothly than the automatic Mazdas too, especially in hard acceleration. I have a 21 Rav4 hybrid and my in-laws have a CX-5 turbo.

  16. The Renegade isn’t based on the 500x. They were developed at the same time. The basic platform and engines are European, but the suspension, steering, AWD, HVAC and UConnect on both are from Jeep developers.

  21. Subie Bruh Unfortunately, Subaru’s reliability has gone way down hill and Volkswagen’s has improved. VW is one of just three manufacturers that use DI/PI engines and their DSGs are faultless. There may be other issues with Volkswagens, especially in cheap Mexican-made models, but engines and transmissions aren’t it anymore. Nor are drivetrains, actually.

  23. 650 miles on a car that only gives you 14.5 gallons in a tank? That’s 45mpgs. I own a 21 XLE hybrid and there’s no way that you actually did that, even if you hypermiled the entire time.

  24.  @eddy67  Depends on my driving and season. I live in NYC, but about half my time I’m actually on the highway. In the winter I get about 470 miles on a tank. The other months I get 500, solidly. I drive gently, in normal mode in the city, and usually in ECO on the highway. I do about 72 mph on cruise control. The computer says my 1 year average fuel economy is 39.8 mpg. When I start driving aggressively, the difference isn’t all that big, actually. I still get about 36-37mpg. It’s also what I average in the winter, with the heat on. I have a 1 year-old XLE with 13k miles on it and stock Toyo Open Country A38’s (good tires, btw).

The Outback is based on the Legacy sedan. Volkswagen’s only wagon is the Passat, available outside of North America. Sport Utility Vehicles started off generally as passenger versions of pick-up trucks, but that’s not the industry’s definition of it. Only laymen try to describe an SUV as something including a body-on-frame architecture. In reality, the industry doesn’t see such restrictions. In the auto industry, the CUV is a subset of the SUV: a higher ground clearance, tall (body side) vehicle with a wagon-like structure, thar usually includes an AWD/4WD drivetrain option. The CUV segment is actually called a “crossover SUV” because “Sport Utility Vehicle” is simply a marketing moniker, not a legal definition of a type of vehicle.

  30. MK7 GTI The non-hybrids don’t suffer from road noise so much as they suffer from engine noise. The Camry, which has the same engine, does too. The issue is that the 2.5 likes to rev high. Its power sweet spot is in the 4000rpms, and that makes it very loud. Toyota has said they’d try to address it in the 2020 models, likely by adding more sound insulation in the firewall. The hood skirt does nothing for sound in the cabin. It’s there for engine temperature control. Anyway... the Hybrid suffers from that sound issue less because it uses the electric motors and the eCVT to aid the gas engine in making that peak power, so the engine rarely revs up that high. When it does, it’s just as noisy, and you can hear it twice in the video, but it only does that when you push the pedal all the way and in sport mode. Otherwise it’s near silent as it runs on electricity and uses the gas engine on near idle to charge the battery.

  31. TechDealz I had read it weeks ago online. I will look for it and post it once I find it again. From my understanding, Toyota said they’d reduce the cabin noise levels, not change anything with the engine. It also said nothing of doing this retroactively, for current owners, so if it bothers you, don’t buy it until the fixed cars are in the dealer lots. Remember, even if they do improve the noise levels, we don’t know how or how much.

  44.  @MilkyWayGalaxyy  What’s with the $50k comments? In the US, the Rav4 Hybrid Limited, with ALL option packages MSRPs for $41,155 USD. The XSE shown, with ALL options, AND delivery fee is $40,850 USD. Even with a $2000 premium today, it’s still WAY below $50k. A Hybrid LE starts at $29k. If you want certain luxury packages that’s your problem. They cost money. You can’t complain about that. I can get into a Lexus NX 350h AWD for $45k that’s almost $3k over MSRP, but that’s the current “market adjustment” as they call it. Still a good price for the car.

  46. Except the Tucson’t real world fuel economy is MUCH worse than advertised, the acceleration is worse than advertised, it uses piano black everywhere and anything except the top trim uses absolute garbage materials inside. I don’t even want to start on their turbo GDIs.

  47.  @joa8593  No. The current gen Prius has a 120hp engine and it’s been clocked from 10.3 to 12.7 in a 0-60 by various reports. You’re assuming each generation keeps getting faster, which is a false assumption. The first gen Prius was actually the fastest.
