  2. Preston, I was born and grew up in Russia, but served in the US Air Force, including a deployment in AFG. It’s not really comparable, even to remote FOBs. Russian forward bases lack infrastructure (housing, food, clean water, showers, etc.) on permanent basis. Ours did not. If you were at a remote location, you were there for a week, two tops. Then you came back to a larger base for a while. Not the Russians. They don’t have the logistics for it. They get supply trains, but they’re not getting the big stuff or quantities. There are no C-17s, C-130s or even Chinooks full of stuff coming their way. All their stuff is brought by stake trucks or flatbeds. That’s why they went into towns for toilet paper, food, soda, booze, batteries. blankets, etc. They have no PXs. They don’t do MWR. There are no movies, no gyms… nothing. Without the ability to go into a town they have nothing, which feels like a prison.

Ukraine is much more likely to follow the example of the Finno-Russian Winter War war in 1938-1940 where Finland lost 10% of its land, but beat back the Russian invasion, gained its independence and kept Russia at bay ever since. Of course this war is going on for much longer and there are far more losses, but the result was a weakened Russia that was open to foreign invasion, and the expulsion of the USSR from the League of Nations (predecessor of the UN). Interestingly, the Soviet Union’s explanation for the invasion of Finland in 1939 was identical to their explanation of the invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

I personally know a number of guys who’ve gone and joined the fight in Ukraine, and every one of them (that I know) joined for the same reason: they enlisted in the US at a young age and found a home and family in the military. All of them had done one of more deployments to Iraq, Afghanistan or both and while they found them difficult, they also found a purpose in the fight. Since returning they’ve separated for various reasons, but all of them did poorly in the civilian world. Many have PTSD. Many can’t keep a job. Most are now single. They went because they felt their lives had no purpose in the civilian world. These guys are not well, psychologically.

This is the equipment that “fell off” the logistics trucks. This is the reason they don’t have it in the first place.

  11. I’m a native Russian speaker. It sounds like a couple of these guys may be Chechen. Also, while a couple of them are trained a disciplined, most of the video the leader (with the camera) spends yelling at everyone to move forward… again, and again, and again, and again. There’s not a lot of discipline there in actuality. This looks like a squad against 1-2 Ukrainian guys. The rest were either dead before this skirmish or were killed by the vehicle.

  15.  @johnwalsh4857  Sorry mate, but none of that is true. There are about 500 Wagner troops in Ukraine. They’re in the Donetsk region. They’re all Russian. Nepalese guys are contracted into the regular Russian military. They get paid decent money, but not $4k a month. Closer to half that. They certainly don’t get R&R in the rear. There is still a lot of fear of desertion and the foreign fighters aren’t even Russian citizens.

  18. I wouldn’t write off Ukrainians just yet, but… time favors Russia here. Operational failures are giving them many opportunities to learn from mistakes, tactical and strategic, and time gives then an ability to implement fixes. Ukraine, being a much smaller country with fewer resources, simply has less ability to implement their fixes. They have to focus on immediate defense needs. This is why the West has been saying that time is of the essence in this offensive.

  27. Southern Lebanon terrain and type of fighting is actually very similar to what the US saw in Afghanistan. A lot of tactics the US found successful were taught to the Israelis. The big difference seems to be in IED use and suicide bombings, which aren’t nearly as common with Hezbollah.

Lets speak plainly: there is no evidence of any significant troop and equipment build-up in Western Russia or Belarus to launch any major offensive. Period. Russia is an East-to-West stretched nation (geographically). For them to compile sufficient forces they would need to bring them from all around the nation, and house them, temporarily, near the Ukrainian border in order to mobilize them into a cohesive fighting force. Those formations would be easily noticed by satellites, human and signals intel of NATO and Ukraine. In other words, if Russia was planning something large, we’d know.

  41. The gap in our air defense system doesn’t refer to a spacial gap. It refers to the fact that our radars were specifically tuned to search for and track airplanes and missiles, all of which move at fairly high speeds. Since balloons were never a threat, the tech simply wasn’t calibrated to include slow-moving objects. The Chinese balloon in question was easy to spot because of its size, and the decision was finally made to recalibrate the system to include slow moving objects as well. That likely caused us to find the other, smaller balloons.

  46. I disagree. Ukraine will never give up Kharkiv. As the second largest city in Ukraine, it is crucial to keep it. Russia knows this. It would cost Russia over 500k soldiers to do it, which it doesn’t have to spare. So what is this about? This is a chess move, and a good one. It requires Ukraine to shift reserve forces from the Kramatorsk direction, which is what Russia is actually after. They want full control of Donbas and Luhansk. That’s their self-mandate so to speak. If they achieve that, they’ll feel justified to end the war through negotiations and keeping those territories.
