  1. I think Putin's negotiating position will be that unless Ukraine militarily pushes out Russian forces, then he is holding that land period. He can switch to defense and it will be difficult for Ukraine to root out Russian forces unless supporting logistics are undermined. Ukraine and Europe have had some time to build a more distributed electric power network in Ukraine. Never too late to start, but that effort really needs to ramp up. And Ukraine might as well reciprocate and strike non-nuclear Russian electrical infrastructure.

  7. You can find statements from Don Jr. and Eric Trump about substantial Russian investments in Trump development projects. After a string of bankruptcies on various projects, American banks become very hesitant to lend money to Trump. This left Trump wide open to foreign interests. Trump is described as transactional. American defense companies and the various interests that would like to see a free Ukraine need to consider holding their nose for four years and outbid the Russians (who are low on cash these days) on financing Trump projects. Trump will love this of course. It will set him up as one of the richest men in the world for the remainder of his life. The deal will be he has to support Ukraine. This is what it has come to. The Russians have been outbidding the Americans when it comes to financing Trump.

Probably most pensioners were told that they had to evacuate to keep the money coming in, so they left. Folks who actually own a home and have a farm could stay.

When under high stress of course, some of the more superficial forms of orderliness, such as the precise width of a folded towel, can and should be set aside for the mission priorities. If a break occurs, re-establishing full order can calm the mind. It also can be re-assuring to new troops when they arrive at a new location.

  29. Air Force Manual 11-2F-16 (unclassified online version) outlines the training of an F-16 pilot. Such a pilot already has gone through months just to get their wings in training aircraft. Many Ukrainian pilots are probably considered qualified to start F-16 training. I hear language has been an issue. Looking at the Air Force Manual and listening to the news about when training got started, around summer 2023, it will probably be summer or fall of 2024 before Ukrainian F-16 pilots are ready for combat. No complaints if they show up sooner. They can speed things up somewhat, but there is no substitute for going through Red Flag or some similar combat training before real combat missions. There is probably a lot of work going into customizing their combat training for the Ukrainian battlespace. I too, am frustrated that training did not get started back in mid-2022. If that had happened, then I think the war would be different now. I think we'll get there, and I think it will make a difference.

  31.  @andysimonsNWO  Mr. Trump can ground anyone's F-35s by ceasing support of them. It is no longer prudent to continue with F-35, however bad the interruption is. Any foreign planner should assume that Russia and China will soon have full details on the F35. Mr. Trump is transactional.

  34. Imagine if the 82nd and 101st Airborne had been deployed to Ukraine during the Olympics with potent air support. Maybe Putin would have been found to be telling the truth that Russia had just been conducting military exercises. It would have messed up his calculations. But almost everyone would have been screaming at the United States for doing such a thing. Putin could have cited it as a reason to invade, but then the state of his military would have been exposed and damaged much more. I think the odds are the invasion would have been cancelled and Putin's subversive activities escalated.

  38. No! Europe could provide dozens, if not hundreds of smaller, portable, container based, trailer based, etc., generators and decoys to create a web of distributed electrical generation. Ukraine and Europe needed to be working on this since 2022. It has been talked about. It needs to happen. It might mean rotating blackouts, but a survivable system of distributed generators could provide Ukrainians with hours of electric power each day.

  39. Well done, Jake! Totally agree on ATACMS. With a strong rule of non-engagement of targets in internationally recognized Russian territory, ATACMS deployment in March 2022 would have started the change in momentum back then. However, some of the most powerful monied interests seem to have impressed upon the President and SOD that they would rather throw Ukraine under the bus than provide Ukraine with weapons that might trigger Putin's intolerance for loss. I take this from a SOD Austin single sentence early in the war. Somebody had to hear him say that in public. In addition to improved AD, and because some missiles and aircraft are going to get through, Europe, the US, and South Korea need to make the effort to keep Ukraine supplied with replacement components for Ukraine's electrical system, as well as a steady supply of fuel and containerized, or trailered distributed electric generating units. Like artillery, these units can be moved to various improvised connection points on streetside distribution lines. This is key to Ukrainians finding refuge within their own country and keeping parts of the Ukrainian economy active through the winter and until the large plants can be restored.

  41. That's right about the electric utility system, Jake! Yes, you can knock it out for a while, but linemen and women and substation techs and engineers and equipment manufacturers take great pride in getting the power back on. There are many things that can be done to reinforce the reliability and restorability of an electric power system. And while it is tempting to attack the Russian power system, it is much better to attack their trains and associated logistics with long range missiles. The thing to drop on Russia is leaflets.

  46. Not easily. His base would support changing the Constitution, but they don't have 3/4 of the States to do that. His base might start to help him violently rescind the Constitution, but I think most them would become aghast at what that means for their own people and prosperity. There are Americans that are that deluded. We saw them on January 6th. They also saw they are not as big a group as they think they are, but they do not like to admit that.

I tend to think that whatever survives the total spill might be sound enough to build upon, but I suppose interfaces to it could be tricky. However, a short term repair doesn't need to be fully leak proof, it just needs to be good enough to allow folks downstream to do recovery work. Yeah, the mines are a nightmare for decades. For the oil, there is this stuff called polyolefin oil-SAP that turns spilled oil into a gel that can be collected and refined. Guess I like to be optimistic in the face of a total mess.
