  2. To be fair to doctors, mental health services are severely underfunded and there is more and more demand for them. People are individuals and need more attention than doctors can give in 10 minute appointments. A good relationship with a doctor should always involve an exchange of information and sometimes assertiveness if need be, but without being aggressive. It's hard for a depressed person to be assertive on their own behalf I guess, and it requires some understanding of their own condition. I don't believe there is a 'cure' for depression. Symptoms can be alleviated with medication but in the end only the person themselves can get themselves out of it - sometimes with the help of friends or family. Some people never escape it, and poverty I think can be one cause, because of all the pressures and fractured relationships that can come with that.

  5.  @htb123  That may work for some people but not for all, I think, but I do think pills should be a last resort or a temporary one, especially when they are addictive.

  9. Not so. Boris did this to himself by getting taxpayer funded defence lawyers. The client of the lawyers is the government as they are the payers and that means the lawyers have to hand over the info they have on Boris to the government.

  10.  @andrewkenny4633  None now. UK oysters used to be cleaned in a plant in the Netherlands but since Brexit the UK is not entitled to use that facility and we didn't build one in the UK. I just looked all this stuff up. UK fishermen could have looked it up before voting for Brent.

  13. They do have some policies and principles but policies are generally readied more closer to election time so you know what they'd do if they were in government. It's no good having too many fixed polices too early because circumstances change, the economy changes, and the government may steal your policies of parts of them or try to sabotage them

  15.  @robertmalyn6493  It's part of the system of checks and balances to try and get the Commons to reconsider bad ideas or just improve them. They can't ultimately block it though. Without the Lords any loony badly thought out idea could become law without further considered scrutiny.

  16.  @robertmalyn6493  If it ain't broke don't fix it. I do think a consideration by another body with lots of experience is a good thing and has proved to be over the centuries. Whether the Commons takes notice or not is a different matter. Imagine if the Post Office had been subject to an independent assessor who looked at what they were doing and how they were behaving. That would not have been a bad thing and might have saved them a lot of trouble in the longer run as well as protecting the lives of innocent sub-postmasters. Sadly those who were in the position to scrutinize the PO were not really independent. The assessors brought in by the P.O were funded by them and when they started unearthing the truth, they were dispensed with.

  17. A new one appeared locally. Very convenient for me and I had a very nice haircut but I saw no one else in the shop the whole time I was there. Can't believe the guy was a criminal though. He was very nice. About 30. Quite gentle. I'd say he was probably a graduate but knew how to cut hair. I don't think his English was more than basic as he wasn't really chatty though asked some polite questions. The 2 advertised hairdressers were him and a woman. I didn't see her though. Not surprising as the business was not busy. Charged £35 for wash, haircut and blow try. I stopped going to my regular hairdresser during Covid lockdowns and then realised I could cut my own hair reasonably well by bringing it to the front on both sides. I'd then ask a family member to look at the back to check it was evenly cut. It generally was, except for a few wisps of hair that needed trimming. My regular hairdresser was charging £60 for a wash haircut and blow dry before lockdowns and the price seemed to go up on each visit (I'd visit about every 6 months). By now I imagine it would be about £80. He did offer a small reductions to seniors but kept forgetting to apply it and I'd forget to ask. It was quite a walk away uphill and now it's too much for me.

  19.  @Sam-qh1sh  The NHS has to pay training costs for doctors and nurses which in the case of doctors can be 7 years long. Then the private sector just swoops them up for free. It can also pay staff more because it charges its patients, and in the UK it doesn't do the most expensive work such as A&E. When things go wrong in private sector medicine the patients get shipped back to the NHS to deal with via A&E. Also the private sector is charging the NHS a lot for the work it carries out via NHS contracts. It charges enough to make a profit.

  22. This is a very thoughtless or childish speech on freedom. One person's 'freedom' can take away the freedom of another. There's the freedom to catch Covid 19. Then there's the freedom to give it to other people. And then there's the freedom to overload the NHS and mentally destroy or kill off a few carers. Ah, there's freedom and then there's selfishness with no thought for others or communities. Together we stand. Divided we fall. He references WWII but that was fought together with people doing as they were told. Soldiers don't get to choose to ignore orders. Civilian populations didn't get to choose whether they 'blacked out' or not at night.

If you look at Farage's record he's more about what suits Farage than taking any consistent logical rational position.   30. Douglas Murray should perhaps be more sympathetic to truckers in the UK and what they are having to go through because of Brexit, but all that is hardly mentioned by his ilk. They'd rather sweep it under the carpet.

  33.  @jujutrini8412  Though it's not really the train companies dragging it out. It's really the government stopping them settling. Thatcher wanted to crush the miners union. Today's Tory government wants to crush the railworkers' unions in order to savagely cost cut on services for the public and terms and conditions and jobs of railworkers. The government actually did an assessment of how long they thought the railworkers could afford to hold out but they were drastically wrong. The rail workers learned from the miners and don't call all out strikes but periodic ones.

  47. The RMT hasn't had any offers from the companies where the DfT is in control as Eddie said. Get back to some research or listen better! Why should people endlessly accept cuts in real terms in pay and fire and rehire conditions to provide ever increasing profits to the already wealthy? Where is your sense of social justice or is Britain to turn into a workforce of slaves with no control over pay and conditions?
