  1.  @paulhoye9680  Multiple channels can't keep spouting lies. They would lose their reputations and their advertisers. In the UK they would lose their licence to broadcast. Ofcom, the regulator would end their licences and shut them down. You can always visit independent fact check sites if you believe something to be untrue, but selecting one single conspiracy site is not finding the truth, it's finding something that agrees with what you want to believe.

  2.  @tentaklaus9382  Masks aren't designed to 'isolate you from others'. They are designed to prevent or reduce the spread of the virus when you are with others. Whether isolation is worse for your health than Covid depends on your circumstances and how likely Covid is to kill you. Those with underlying health conditions, obesity or the elderly will be more vulnerable to dying from the virus, but not exclusively so. We're not talking about everyone isolating, only those who have Covid. After all, even with other illnesses, it's not advisable for people to go to work if they are going to infect others. I remember someone at work who had the norovirus (remember that?) He was vomiting for weeks - most unpleasant, but he did stay off work and did not give it to those around him. The problem with Covid is that not everyone has symptoms so they don't always know they have it and could spread it to others. Testing is important to identify those cases.

  3.  @tentaklaus9382  P.S If someone mugged you in the street, presumably you'd be angry with them, but if they gave you Covid, causing you to be ill for weeks, or even longer (long Covid) because of their unwillingness to take simple measures to prevent spread, you'd be o.k with that would you?

  5.  @tentaklaus9382  There's no easy answer in such times, none without detriment. I had cancer and had my operation delayed during the lockdown period, but lockdown also protected me from Covid which would certainly have killed me had I caught it.

  6.  @tentaklaus9382  No but I have chronic asthma and I also have diabetes. I've also recently had cancer and am having treatment which might affect my immune system. I have some young adults in my house and they have been fine with the protective measures.

  10. A friend of mine was talking about some anti-depressants that have no side effects. Her husband was taking them. Unfortunately I've forgotten what they were called but if they are known about then doctors must know about them too.

The virus is overwhelming the care and health system.The families of patients will care about that. Of course I value their lives but I'm not affected as much as their families are and I can't pretend to be.

If you look lower down in the comments you'll seen that I've sent a message of sympathy to an individual who told me that her husband, a doctor, has died from the virus and that 80 doctors have died in her country. This is the comment from 'snowflake'. You may want to send her a message of sympathy too. 'Helen Trope , in Iran almost 80 doctors died since Mid February 2020 , including my husband who was an orthopaedic surgeon. He was only 54 and unfortunately he couldn’t make it in 25 of February 2020 , I can’t believe it , every things gone just because of that tiny evil'

  15.  @yuyu-mo4je  That's not true. Once you're infected, you're infected, but the symptoms usually take 5 days to show up. Once the virus is in your body, nothing can stop the infection taking hold. Taking a shower won't stop it and bed sheets are irrelevant at that stage. The preventative measures that people need to take are to stop it getting into their bodies in the first place.

  16.  @yuyu-mo4je  Hygiene is good practice, yes, but you have to stay away from other people (2 metres away) , not touch them or shake their hands, and wash your hands when you get back to your house. A shower when you get back to your house would be good as part of that. In a lockdown situation, only leave your house for food or in an emergency.

  22. No one knows. There's no cure. If a vaccine works that might help but flu vaccines don't get rid of flu. When those work they they just stop it being so serious for vulnerable people. The same might apply to Covid 19.

  25.  @fasteddiejs  The excess deaths figure, which shows how many more people are dying than usual, is taken from the register of deaths. You can't register a death twice, and the excess deaths figure shows, that the number of Covid deaths are likely under counted.

  29.  @gregp3210  Some infected people will be ill and some will not get symptoms. Those who may not get symptoms would be mostly in the under 30 age group, but they can still spread it to those who may suffer more.

  30.  Andrew C  The government was told that PHE when it was set up would not be able to deal with events such as pandemics mainly because that re-organisation involved reductions in geographic links to local areas who are used to dealing with local public health issues and know their areas. In the past local councils had a bigger role in this. It does seem like you'd want to use a database but then who are the people employed to tracks and trace and are they skilled and trained enough in using the appropriate technical means to do it? Serco subcontracted such work to 29 organisations who are probably operating from call centre type hubs, with staff paid at minimum levels, and little knowlege of lcoal areas and communication resources in those areas. There was supposed to be an app issued to help with it, but the government's first app (created by the private sector) didn't work and had to be withdrawn if I remember correctly. The government was warned year after year in recent years of the need to prepare for a pandemic, but they did nothing. Funding and stocks of equipment were cut as part of the austerity programme. A private sector guy was brought in to run the part of the NHS that stores equipment and one of the first actions he took was to run the stock down and sell some of it off.

  31.  Andrew C  I've just looked up the explanation for the missing tests. It said that some test results exceeded the maximum file size that would be accepted by the system so they could not input those results. That sounds like a design fault in the software. PHE say it has been fixed now. PHE won't have been the software designers. That will undoubtedly be a private company. The main errors that lead to this kind of mistake is not sufficiently consulting the end users (or customers) before designing the software. Designers often consult at too high a level, with people who don't know the nitty gritty of the work. I've seen that happen a number of times in the public sector.

  32.  Andrew C  P.S Strangely enough competent skilled people are not queueing up to take minimum wage jobs. They are often forced to, but they tend to aim for something better ideally. I used to work in the civil service. They cut numbers and stopped recruiting so they'd take agency staff instead. However a senior person complained to me (in a chat, not formally) that he could not get P.A.s from Agencies that would stay or that could do the work. They were perfectly well qualified and experienced as P.As but if they'd never worked in the public sector before they often could not cope because the job depended not just on their skills but on knowing how the sector worked, what the issues were, what the procedures were who to consult, how to consult them, who to engage with etc etc. You really had to know something about the set up and the history. Also P.As could usually get more pay working in the private sector.

I don't know as I don't know your source. Specialists are always used for computer problems. They don't let old buffers loose on them, but an awareness and understanding of computer systems at the higher levels of organisations is certainly useful otherwise the specialists can pull the wool over an organisation's eyes to hide their own mistakes.

I can't say more as I didn't hear the radio 4 discussion or know who was in the discussion but I've a feeling you've got the wrong end of the stick about the cause of this, not meaning to be rude. I'll have to look into it more. Where did you get 'the wrong tool for the job' info from?

  36.  @gregp3210  I had my cancer surgery delayed for 3 months because of Covid. I really feel for anyone who experiences delays in treatment for serious conditions. It's up to the government to give the NHS the funding it needs to catch up, though extra staff cannot be created overnight. I think the NHS is prioritising the most serious cases. In my case 10 NHS Trusts contracted with a private hospital to use their premises to keep non-Covid urgent cases away from Covid ones. He was asking the news media to inform the public and tell them the truth. Clearly he thought there was a network of people who would try to suppress the truth and ensure the press didn't cover the truth. I think this probably includes telling lies. I think in the USA this would be the major corporations who have so much power and influence in politics, particularly the industrial military complex which is always pushing for foreign wars.   42. @Truth seeker. I hadn't heard of the Bilderberg group. I've looked them up and it seems their aim is world peace with the US and Europe joining in working for free capitalist societies. However I think there's too much economic competition between capitalist countries for any joint enterprise to work. I don't think Kennedy was particularly referring to them. I think it was the military industrial complex. My view on Kennedy's death, and this is my best guess, I'm not asserting it as the 'truth', is that Lyndon Johnson arranged the assassination. I found out afterwards that Jackie Kennedy believed that too. The area of the assassination and cover up was within Johnson's sphere of influence and it had to be someone that high up to arrange the kind of cover up that happened. Motive: Johnson differed politically from Kennedy. He was ambitious and the Kennedy brothers often used to humiliate him. He was probably also corrupt and in the pay of the Mafia or some such group and he feared that would be exposed. He would probably have been a dead man himself if that was exposed as the Mafia would have had to get rid of him. That's my theory anyway. Wasn't Kennedy proposing some anti- corruption drive? I believe he was.

The cheapest food in countries where people don't grow or make it themselves (processed food) is full of fat, sugar and salt and large corporations push large portions at people as a way of selling as much as possible. Sugar is addictive and salt brings out flavour so it's easy for people to eat too much. Also, they don't work it off as many US citizens don't get enough exercise. They work long hours in static situations and go everywhere in their cars. It's the American dream, which can turn into a nightmare, especially when healthcare may be unaffordable for many.

  48. Monarchist 18. The "Iron Lady " was shallow and trite in her thinking. It's not "someone else's money". It's mine and many people like me. If we vote for a government that offers welfare, and that government is popular enough to be elected, and we pay taxes, that's our decision. It's not using "other people's money". If welfare is non existent in Venezuela, to me that is not a socialist country or maybe it suffers too much from corruption. They should have used their oil revenue better, but the USA is not helping if it's banned the sale of medical drugs to Venezuela, as stated in the video.
