  4. The Europeans have made it clear that they expect the UK to come up with what they want. The EU isn't going to make a series of offers or options. Secondly, they think that time has passed. They are not going to re-open the agreement made with Theresa May, and a Free Trade Deal with Europe can't be negotiated at this stage without an agreement. It would now have to wait for a no deal exit before negotiations on a Free Trade Deal could begin. Free Trade deals can take years to negotiate. All in all, I'd say we're headed for a 'no deal' exit on 31 October by default.

  11.  @heminder  It's not hysteria with Covid. If doctors and nurses can't get tests that's serious. They can't work for fear of passing Covid onto patients. If children can't get tests they can't go to school and parents may not be able to go back to work as childcare may not be possible.

  16. The factors affecting crime in London were building up before Khan took power and in fact they were increasing under Boris Johnson's time as mayor of London. The government massively cut the police budgets in Britain resulting in a loss of over 20,000 police officers. Also their squeeze on people through the years of austerity budgets resulting in the closure of many leisure and youth facilities and the high youth unemployment and worsening of the gap between rich and poor, and lack of action to tackle drug crime, had a lot to do with it. Trump should concern himself with reducing gun crime in the USA which is far worse than in the UK and there are cities in the USA which exceed London in homicides, before he criticises other people.

  25. spiro. It's not a scientific hypothesis. I think it's now an accepted fact but not everyone may know the cause of the roundness of the Earth. He explains how the pressure of gravity compresses the Earth into a round shape. Did you want him to quote a scientific formula for it? I'm sure you can consult a text book if you want more details about the physics of it. It wouldn't make very entertaining TV though.

We would also be paying tariffs on the imports from them and that will put our cost of living up or wholesalers may decide to go for cheaper goods from elsewhere and who knows what risks there might be in those as other countries don't have to adhere to such high food and safety standards. Do you think our government will be willing to pay for enough public servants to quality check the stuff coming in? The EU has already offered the deal and said they won't be changing it. Even Liam Fox, arch Brexiteer and Minister for trade, says we need a deal rather than a no deal Brexit. If Boris takes us out on a no deal it will be the biggest lesson on the consequences of arrogance and ignorance that we'll be taught but the price won't be paid by the wealthy like Boris and Rees Mogg. It will be paid by ordinary Britons.

Firstly, without knowing me or explaining the relevance, you imply I have no sympathy for people who were the victims of particular crimes in a particular continent. Secondly you appear to criticise such sympathy as irrational morality. That's a bit of a heads you win, tails I lose, argument which is not really rational in itself.

I did read that she had some poor devil working all night to do the impossible (basically to overturn a court decision) and then shouted at them at a meeting when she arrived in the morning at which point they were still working, after which they collapsed and had to be taken to hospital.

  41. Rob Val. It's possible because Corbyn/Labour want to stay in a customs union with the EU, but the Tories don't. Staying in a customs union is much easier for the EU to accept. Turkey is not in the EU but it is in a customs union with it. Staying in a customs union would mean no tariffs on trade, smoother trade, no NI border problems.

Here is an explanation of the difference between being in a customs union with the EU and being in the single market which is something different and has wider responsibilities.   46. I guess the management has a private sector mindset i.e. cover up rather than address issues. My brother died at the QE hospital in 2018 and my sister in 2022. I've no evidence that there was any maladministration but my brother had an immune system transfer and yet was not isolated during this vulnerable time. I don't know why. He did share with someone else who had the same procedure. They both got infections when their immune systems were not functioning. My brother died. The other guy recovered from the infection. When I visited my sister and asked the nurse a simple question she appeared to react fearfully before answering me. The management should listen to the medical experts who have the welfare of patients at heart.

I don't know what's happened in recent years, but years ago I used to work for the government on the national insurance side of things and sometimes we had to interview people using a checklist of questions to decide whether they were self-employed or not. If they hit the right criteria they were employees no matter what they had been told about their status. Whether people are employees or self-employed is determined by a set of criteria, not self-declaration or declaration by companies. Amazon drivers could test this in court as Uber drivers did.
