The Rus' wouldn't recognize either language, state or culture as their own. Modern states claiming a medieval confederation as if it was a predessor to them, is ridiculous. Just as much as Italy claiming the Roman Empire was an ancient form of them.

Nobody tells you that you are a Mongolian or something else either. We call you what you identify yourself as, so respect the Ukrainians and do that too. If they see themselves as different, they are. Your opinion is irrelevant.

I lived in UA before but didn't come to central Ukraine often. But thanks for clarifying it. Currently trying to learn Ukrainian, as I was only taught Russian by my family (they originate from Donetsk) and I prefer to speak Ukrainian instead of Russian with my friends now ))

  15. @Jan Hanchen Michelsen  yeah same for me. I was planning to return there and complete my studies there, only to be stopped by Covid and then the old lunatic. Haven't seen the family in 4 years 😅. Odesa is gorgeous. It's my favourite city in Ukraine. I hope you are soon able to see it. You will go through a beautiful part of Ukraine (I used to occasionally take the bus/train from Lviv to Odesa and then you pass through the same part of the country). I'd advise you to see Lviv, too. It is the cultural heart of Ukrainian culture and the Ukrainian language. I hope you'll be soon able to visit it. I am planning to go on a tour through the entire country, including Crimea, after the war (I'll go there to help rebuild).

  16. @Jan Hanchen Michelsen  let's hope so. все буде Україна! Including Crimea and the Donbas (my family originates from Donetsk, but they live in Kharkiv now). Yeah I miss some of my friends and family, I am born and raised in the Netherlands. I am half Ukrainian, half Dutch. But I also spend considerable time in Ukraine. I always say I have two homes, the Netherlands and Ukraine. I miss Ukraine alot, but I promised my best friend from Kropvynysky to not return until after the war, as she is afraid I will have to fight and will die. So I keep my promise eventhough it eats at the soul. She often says to me that it is clear that the Ukrainian side is strongest in me 😅🤣🤣 Everything we will be fine, Ukraine will be free. Ironically the only Ukrainian speaking city I have been to is Lviv, all others I have been to are Russian speaking (makes sense considering where my family is from) but I want to visit alot of cities in Western Ukraine. You will like Lviv, and the other cities you'll see, I am sure of it. If you ever get the chance, you should visit Zakarpattia Oblast as well. Beautiful carpathians. Jealous of my friend who visited Uzhorod haha. Kharkiv is also a city you should one day visit, Shevchenko park is gorgeous)). Слава Україні! Смерть ворогам! Україна переможе!

  20. Whilst I share your statement, I think it is wisest not to repeat the mistakes of the treaty of Versailles. How much I hate the Russian Federation, it is short-sighted to wish ill on the common people or wish to destroy the state. In the end we will have to be able to create a lasting peace in the region after Ukrainian victory, and not do the same as we did to the Germans only let them resent us more and start another, even more devastating, war.

  27. @Connie  I knew it, for obvious reasons, but it was covered up because Stalin was one of the victors of WW2, whilst he actually was just as evil was Hitler. The shocking part is that the Moskals even worship Stalin, yet they complain about Bandera. But it is not just Holodomor. The Russians did a warcrime against the Poles in Katyn, which they still deny. Yet they complain about what the UPA did. They're the biggest hypocrites. This is without talking about the earlier things the Russians and Soviets did. Including the Ukrainian - Soviet war

  28. @81Heino  yes and even in Lviv etc you could speak in Russian if you'd explain them that you don't speak Ukrainian because you're a foreigner (as they obviously preferred Ukrainian also before the war). It is Russia's actions that will make Russia less and less used in Ukraine and see a rise of Ukrainian. Not Ukrainian government, even if they would have wanted to (which they didn't) could have done so much damage to the Russian language in Ukraine, as Putin's Russia has done.

  29. ​@Andrei Tiberiovic Gazdovici I love Ukraine, but what they do need to fix, and what they are working very hard on, even during the war, is the corruption problem. That is something that otherwise can be a problem in joining the EU. But lets hope our new brothers and sisters from Ukraine, which so clearly have shown that they don't want to be part of the "Русский мир" anymore but instead part of European civilisation, will be welcomed soon in the EU. It would make me, a half Dutch, half Ukrainian person extremely happy. Героям слава! Смерть ворогам!

The point I try to make is that you are apparently supporting a war because some Ukrainians support an a**hole who is responsible for thousands of deaths whilst you and your country support an a**hole responsible for millions, actually tens of millions, of people. He even got a new statue. Don't you see the hypocrisy in that? I mean Stalin was on par with Hitler and had the USSR been defeated, people would have spoken about Stalin as we now do about Hitler. As they were both just as evil. The Russians of all people should know how the mystification of historical people works. You even have one mass murderer, responsible for hundreds of thousands of deaths on display in Moscow (Stalin used to be there too, but was removed). Again clear parrot, just repeating what others tell him without any critical thinking. Most Ukrainians don't even know Bandera, much less support him. But keep believing all your Führer tells you Vatnik.

  37.  @sk8es25  I do. My family is originally from Donetsk before fleeing in 2015. I do share part of his sentiment. I want all Russians out of the 1991 international borders of Ukraine and they should be forced to pay for the death and destruction they caused. But on the long term to create lasting peace you need to not punish them extremely harsh. This was done to Germany after WW1 and all it did was create an angry revanchist state, which directly caused ww2. It is weird for me as well to think about it, but in the end we're neighbours and whether we like it or not, we have to deal with them. I rather see a peaceful Russia than again a revanchist one. So yes they must be defeated utterly on the battlefield, forced to recognize UA's internationally recognized borders and pay war reparations. We however shouldn't punish their people beyond that. Unless we want to repeat the mistakes of the past.

Just like how the Frankish Empire isn't France, Germany or the Netherlands and Italy isn't the Roman Empire. The Rus' are as much Russian as they are Ukrainian and Belarusian. They wouldn't recognize any of the three states, languages or culture. What you are saying is called a national myth. The same as that the Dutch called themselves the descendents of the Batavians for a long time. Also there was no Varangia. Varangian is just another name for Vikings. Specifically used for the Swedish Vikings going to the major rivers in what is now Ukraine, Belarus and parts of Western Russia.

I think Ukrainian should be promoted and in the next generations it will be the dominant language everywhere in Ukraine, but don't force people to abandon the language they've been speaking since childhood. It happened because Viktor Yanukovich was an a**hole who broke his election promises because Russia gave him money. He was a corrupt jerk who had already been guilty of election fraud before. He reversed democratic reforms to the constitution. Ukrainians aren't Russians and didn't want an authoritarian ruler. So they demonstrated, he started using police violence, and whilst this might have scared you guys off in Moscow, in Kyiv, they doubled down. So it is wrong that the people ousted a leader that was turning in an authoritarian in order to defend their democratic values?
