I'm an American living in Hanoi. After what the American government did in this country during the American war, I strongly believe that America is in NO position to criticize Vietnam on ANYTHING!
425
While Everyone is distracted by events in the East Sea, Chinese factories are setting up shop in northern provinces, such as Bắc Giang, to exploit cheap Vietnamese labor and slap a "Made in Vietnam" label on their products to avoid US taiffs. How come nobody is talking about THAT?
91
@bertronix182 How did the American war help Vietnam become unified?
26
Did everyone notice how Kritenbrink highlighted the great trust the US has with Vietnam and then lied about why he was there? This is an excellent example of why Vietnam has the 4 NOs policy.
20
Playing both sides was Ho Chi Minh's strategy and now the US FINALLY gets it.
17
The Next step is to raise the standards of the English teaching centers, many of which emphasize profits over education.
14
If wages for factory workers are lower in Vietnam than they are in China then why are there over a million Chinese nationals working at factories in Vietnam?
13
The East Sea belongs to Vietnam NOT China.
12
@didierduplantier8359 I'm sure they do that too but opening factories in Vietnam also provides jobs for Chinese workers willing to re-locate. There are sections of Bắc Giang and other northern cities in which all the businesses have signs written in Chinese to accommodate all the Chinese workers who live there.
11
My experience living in Vietnam for the past 5 years is that the people hear understand that: "You get what you paid for" Accordingly, people in the middle class avoid low quality Chinese goods and opt for better quality options.
10
Better for Vietnam to open up to foreign retirees than foreign corporations. Retirees appreciate their surroundings while corporations exploit them.
10
As an American who spent 40 years working as a corporate slave and moved to Vietnam to escape the abuse and exp;oitation, I could not be happier that these greedy a-holes are being taxed to do business in Vietnam.
9
Vietnam is definitely not the place for those who've become dependent on nanny state protections and conveniences. In order to succeed here you must be smart, tough, resourceful and resilient.
8
I live in Hanoi and have not noticed any COVID measures whatsoever.
7
If you're not comfortable with Vietnamese people then WHY are you planning to retire in Vietnam?
7
After a failed marriage in the US I found love here in Vietnam. We got married 3 years ago and I put everything in my wife's name. Rather than depending on the legal system I put my faith in the strength of our relationship. I'm inspired by a line from a Bob Seger song "I'LL TAKE MY CHANCES, BABE, I'LL RISK IT ALL... I'LL WIN YOUR LOVE OR I'LL TAKE THE FALL."
5
@genbond7459 Because they are likely benefiting from it. One scheme I'm aware of is party members and their families teaming up with investors to by large pieces of land and have them designated as industrial parks, and then selling it to foreign, often Chinese, investors to build their factories.
5
@imshulei No. Taiwan, Singapore, The Phillapines and other ASEAN countries all have significant investments in Vietnam as well. Any country who's not actively trying to steal territory from Vietnam is welcome to do business here.
5
@imshulei Vietnam can do whatever they want in regard to trade with China but they need to be careful not to harm their own economy. China is a huge market for Vietnamese agriculture and other products.
5
@imshulei Europe, Korea and Japan aren't using Vietnam to avoid tarrifs or actively trying to steal territory from Vietnam like China is.

Great interview
4
If you actually visited Vietnam you would realize how wrong you are. The people of Vietnam have moved on from the war just as the people of Japan have moved on from WWII.
4
If you feel the need to protect yourself from the person you intend to marry then you sure as hell should't marry that person.
4
@what9980 You seriously need a history lesson if you believe the US won against communism in Vietnam.
4
@what9980 The US failed in Vietnam and communism did NOT spread. The Domino Theory was nonsense.
4
What about it? Do you have a position?
3
@JustAnAcre After my painful divorce in America I learned that fighting it out in the system is a long, painful and expensive process and you lose everything anyway, so why not just give her everything up front and concentrate on being happy.
3
@jimmydseeker5321 Baloney. Most of the people here in Vietnam were born after the war and know little about it and care even less. Furthermore, The American war was only one of many Vietnam endured in the last century. You really should, at least, visit Vietnam before you pretend to know the people who live here.
3
@masnur7007 There was no Civil War in Vietnam.
3
@duongglobalbusinessconsulting Do you find it a bit ironic that workers in the country with the world's 2nd largest economy are fleeing south to find jobs in Vietnam, which is considered to be a developing economy? I can assure you that workers in America aren't running south to Mexico in search of better opportunities. Do you think China's economy is overrated?
3
@Jul_Nguyen You sound like a disaffected Viet kieu who's still fighting your father's war.
3
@genbond7459 A civil war is between 2 opposing factions in the same country. The American War in Vietnam was an iternational war that involved the US, China, USSR, S Korea, Australia and new Zealand. BTW, I've lived here in Vietnam for the past 5 years and I have never heard anyone refer to the Vietnamese civil war.
3
If he wanted to bad mouth China he would have mentioned Uyghur genocide, forced organ harvesting, human trafficking and China's disastrous One Child policy. I thought Ken showed remarkable restraint considering all the atrocities the CCP has committed and continues to commit.
2
Vietnam is not for everyone. You have to have to really love life and have something to offer.
2
Comments like this help explain why Vietnamese women are so interested in Western men
2
Her biggest crime was being stupid. Her second biggest crime was not being a White American.
2
Vietnam was no match for the US, France or Japan either, but that didn't matter, did it.
2
Great story. Thank you for sharing.
2
I think you get your organ transplants from Uyghur and Falun Gong "donors".
2
serriajohn How do you know what the people of Vietnam feel about anything? Do you live here?
2
serriajohn Jimmy is right about economics but wrong about the war. Anyone who's spent time here in Vietnam knows the people who remember the war have moved on from it and those who were born after the war know little about it and care even less.
2
Never. Why change a winning game.
2
@tracyrreed That may be but after going through a divorce myself, I trust my new wife to give me a better settlement in a divorce than the blood sucking lawyers and the man hating courts.
2
"Divide and Conquer". I understand the "Divide" but who is Vietnam trying to "Conquer'
2
@damienlee54 Perhaps, but there are more urgent issues to address like withholding teacher pay.
2
@damienlee54 I agree that nothing will change if we have to depend on the owners to make the changes. I would like to see laws that give victems of nefarious actions more recourse.
2
@bertronix182 Why didn't the US just adhere to the 1954 Geneva Accords and allow the country to hold the elections that were scheduled to take place in 1956?
2
China has been bullying Vietnam for over a thousand years. Long before the US was even a country and before socialism was even thought of. For you to blame tensions between Vietnam and China on the West shows a strong CCP bias and complete ignorance of Asian history.
2
Were you paid to post this comment by one of the PURELY CCP PROPAGANDA Channels.
2
Hey Ken. Did you buy your car in Thailand? Why is the steering wheel on the right instead of the left?
