  7.  @ktelite  I will grant you that - the UK is more willing to let states go than the us. Last time some us states tried to separate, the US sent troops to squash the rebel alliance. And I mean no disrespect when I refer to Scotland as a state (subnational entity). I merely mean that, according to international law, the UK is the country and Scotland is a state (subnational entity) as opposed to France in relation to the EU (country and supranational organization, respectively). Makes it easier for international treaties and negotiations for clear cut universal definitions (remember the old holy Roman empire maps?)

  11. from what I heard earlier it was just political speech during a job (sports). If I were to make a political statement either to or in the presence of my company's client/customer, I could be fired, not have the customers called out for being r-cist by telling me to focus on my job.

  12. Not to be a downer here, but you can attend classes remotely without an internet. My friends parents did that back in the 70s and 80s. Syllabi, books, and lessons were hard copies and sent via the mail. You read the book, followed the lessons, and replied to a professor's question or statement. For open book testing, you could do at home. For closed book testing, a non-relative could sign a form as witness and watch you take the test (this could be done in lockdown too if the person watches from the glass window). As for elementary school, yes, a parent would be needed to stay home with the kid, but don't online schools require that too? Sure they advertise about the ease and time management, but they expect parents to be home which kinda defeats the whole point of private school (parents need to work, otherwise why pay for a glorified homeschool?). As for movies, well, we had movie rental businesses. Stores still sell them at least. And, you didn't have to worry about speed of internet or buffering as the entire movie was on disc/cassette. Magazines were the websites of the day and many had comments about the last week's articles (with many replies). Of course, it was big company censoring the trolls back then so the trolls today would be crying for loss of employment.

  15. 15:40 Just mandate all news broadcasters who use the radio waves (which are under control of the FCC) to give equal time to all parties who can get signatures to get on the ballots for their respective office. Failure to do so would mean fines, suspension of television license, or even the taking of license and reselling to a (potential) broadcaster who will follow the rules. Local elections and debates would be shown as well. Also, all news, be it Fox, CNN, OAN, NBC, etc would have to have neutral media and commentary would have to state such (eg "this is my opinion, but..."). Also, commentary would have to show all sides (imagine bill o'reilley coming on right after Lawrence O'Donnell). News panels should show contrarians and not just those that agree 99% with the host. I have seen countless times, regardless of the channel, that all the commentators say the person they are talking about is guilty without a question and they are instead discussing how such a thing could happen and his punishment. The FCC already has mandates for broadcasters and the airwaves have been considered public. This would in no ways mean a takeover.

The international courts should have the right to suspend UN membership (including security council membership) for any member who ignores its rulings. Cant issue arrest warrants or summons for a nation, cant garnish wages of a nation, cant imprison a nation, etc. That would be the only power of enforcement they could have. Would also make the security council more accountable--with much power comes much responsibility.

  31. And personally I think no city should repeat the Olympics (winter or summer) until every city over 100,000 has been given the opportunity. Fairness... We have 193 member nations of the UN. Of these, at least 110 compete. Instead of money driving, how about Olympic spirit? Rotate to each country in different cities. No repeats of any city until all over 100,000 population have gone (4,037); no repeat of nations until all have gone. Each year (instead of 4), one country from one of the six inhabitable continent goes. Perhaps alphabetically by continent and alphabetically by country within the continent.

  40.  @liamhardie9746  Iirc, the eu govt is elected as well, inasmuch as the british govt or the swiss govt are. The parliament is elected directly by all the people by proportional representation, with districts being the member-states (based on population). The European Council is very indirectly elected as the national parliaments choose their govt which then sends a delegate/minister. Both the European parliament and the European Council appoint the commissioners--the EU's govt (executive). Should it be streamlined better? You betcha. Should it be more democratic and transparent? Of course, just like all the member-states.

  44. US only country that activated NATO Article 5 (mutual defence), and under false pretences and lies in 2001 (that is still active, to my knowledge). US should be paying NATO members for their subterfuge and wrongful deaths of other countries' veterans. And, IIRC, US refused to even consider another NATO member from activating Article 5...essentially because they weren't the big dog US and how dare they.

  46. Why do we directly translate federal chancellor, but use prime minister for minister-presidents? There is no state (land) equivalent of a governor or lieutenant-governor holding a separate office as land/state head of state, so the head of govt term as prime minister would not make much sense. Indeed, at the state/land level, the office of head of govt and head of state is combined as in presidential systems, though reliant on confidence of state assemblies. As such, minister-president should be used rather than prime minister.
