  1. I suspect that a lot of us here in Gotheburg had a mild infection between the middle of January and the end of February. There was a horrible sore throat going round. Our parish priest lost his voice for weeks and sounded like a frog. And the infection would have gone round the congregation, which has had no severe cases. It would not be wise to be taking chances, though, till the tests are done. I think there will be a long wait unless the authorities get their fingers out.

  5. In Sweden, children will carry the virus home and carers will pass it on to the old people they are caring for. The health care system in Sweden WAS superb, but that was ten years ago. Trust in the authorities has been at rock bottom for the past couple of years.

  6. Where are the medics up to with treatment? As I understand it, the fatal cause is due to cytokine storm, which sounds like some kind of response among susceptible individuals. My hunch is that there is an existing medication, possibly one which is readily available and in widespread use, which would be effective.

  12. From Västtrafiken's (West Sweden) web site Västtrafik now reduced tram frequencies in Gothenburg. The change applies from Thursday. The reason is staff shortages due to the corona virus. March 24 at 6:53 pm Prohibition of gatherings with more than 50 people The Public Health Authority has introduced a new ban on public gatherings with more than 50 people. It is about planned and larger gatherings, such as parties and competitive sports events. The Public Health Authority has announced that they will gradually specify what gatherings will be subject to the ban. Public transport has not yet been included, but Västtrafik is following the trend closely. The army has set up emergency hospitals in Stockholm and Gothenburg ready for the expected onslaught. The policy seems to be to let it happen. There is a lot of politics behind this. The government's advisor, Anders Tegnell, is a known Marxist and takes the view that the community is more important than the individual, and a few thousand dead grannies and grandpas is a price worth paying to acquire herd immunity. That said, it would be a merciful release for those in some of the Swedish care homes. There is a pattern here. It is the same incompetence, perpetrated by the same government, that allowed an influx of 190,000 migrants, including a few genuine refugees, in 2015. These migrants, mostly young men, were then spread round the country and the local authorities were told that the government would give them financial support - for a limited period (two or three years, if I recall). We have also had an explosion of violent crime in what was once an outstandingly safe country. Now the government money has stopped and the local authorities have gone broke. From being one of the best managed countries in the world ten years ago, it has degenerated into a shambles of mis-government.

  13. The main problem is that a lot of pleasurable things that are important may not be possible for many people. On the other hand there are treasures to be found on-line, there is less pressure to do things on time, and long deferred projects can be taken up eg gardening, sorting out family photographs, reading. One can try to make most of the opportunities which would not otherwise have arisen. One of the on-line treasures that I have particularly appreciated is the daily services from Russia from the channel TVsoyuz, which have wonderful singing and a tour of the churches, which have only recently been restored - the production standard is outstanding and it is a different place every day, with different styles of music. A restriction of gatherings of no more than 50 people has just been enforced, otherwise it is business pretty much as usual. I think I had it a couple of weeks ago; there have been sore throats going around since the middle of January. But it could equally well be pollen, as there is lots of hazel and birch pollen in the air. No tests available. The government epidemiologist, Anders Tegnell, is behind this do-nothing policy, which is based on the gamble that there will not be a surge of cases which are beyond the ability of the health services to deal with. That is a risky strategy, with cases in Stockholm The Swedish government has lurched from one bad decision to another since 2014, so this is just one more. The major importers were holidaymakers returning from ski holidays in Italy.

Figures in Sweden will rise when it is transmitted from the schools, still open, to homes, where there may be older parents and grandparents.

  19. This raises at least two questions 1) How do we know that all the infected people with no symptoms were diagnosed? 2) Is there existing immunity in the population, in particular, children? If there is, could it be because infection with some common cold viruses carries over to COVID-19?

Given the range of effects from next to nothing to fatal pneumonia, within a couple of weeks there will be a lot of people who have had few or no symptoms, or thought they had a cold, and then recovered. If they have cleared the virus, they cannot give it to anyone else and don't need to isolate themselves; effectively, they have been vaccinated. If the curve has been stopped, it means that there as still a lot of people who remain vulnerable. I have pondered this myself. Like a lot of people, I have been sniffy with a bit of a sore throat since early February; my normal temperature is 36.3 but has been 36.9 the last couple of mornings and feeling a bit tired. Is this the infection, or is it nothing much, or is it my imagination? We need a test to determine if we have contracted this virus. I expect an explosion of cases in Sweden within the next fortnight.

  21. Sweden is heading for an explosion of cases. Swedish cities have huge populations of third world immigrants who are not going to take even the limited precautions which are advised. Actual Swedes and other Europeans seem to be voluntarily hyper-cautious. There seems to be an official policy of allowing the epidemic to develop and run its course to the point that there will be herd immunity, and in the meantime, it is hoped that those in risk groups will keep themselves out of harm's way. This will be yet one more issue to add to all the others which have caused a collapse in confident in government at all levels. The Swedish health authorities' advice is to "carry on as normal. No recommendation to avoid public transport. Traffic will run as normal. We are watching developments carefully and react according to the information and guidelines that come from the public health and other responsible authorities. It is not generally understood that the burden of taxes nominally charged to employees in reality falls on employers. To avoid what is effectively a payroll tax, the production gets moved abroad. Tax reform is overdue in all western countries.
