  2. Kowalski From Nebraska The Congo was an autocratic state that’s wasn’t even technically a colony, it was under the direct rule of the King of Belgium. It’s not much different from Mobutu’s Congo, really, aside from more hand chopping. You know, a Black dictator, instead of a white one raping the Congo to line his pockets. Note that Leopod’s Crimes were a massive political Scandal when it was found out, and Belgium afterwards had a fairly benevolent rule to the Congo- during Mobutu’s rule, there were Congolese who actually wanted the Belgians back because the ‘colonizers’ were less tyrannical. Also, Capitalism and Colonialism have lasted for much longer than Communism.

Other than Israel, Turkey is the only nation in the Middle East who has passed the Middle Income Trap with a diversified economy. They have a wide, open path to the future. Turkey is in a similar position to the Japanese in 1900. First on the scene, and with a sandbox of weaker nations surrounding them.

  10. Dan oz No, you can solve it. By getting rid of the salt. Either use it as salt beds to extract salt from. Or by moving the brine further out to sea where it is more easily diluted. Desalination is definitely a win if you literally have no other way of getting water. The Colorado no longer goes to sea because of the hunger for water.

  12. Little Griff Regarding economics: Bitcoin cannot and will never be a major currency. It’s fixed max cap means it’s far too unstable (ironically on the deflationary side) to be a viable store of value as the total values of goods it backs grows. Etherium, which has a fixed inflation rate (similar to gold) is a much more viable real option, since it is a far more stable store of value. Look at the price of Etherium vs the price of Bitcoin. Which would you rather use to buy groceries? Gold is another alternative, but the exchange rate would be absolutely insane (likely over $3,000/ounce). You absolutely need to have some kind of intermediary currency (which is hard to sell for people who don’t trust normal currencies). It could also just end up remaining the US Dollar. Central Banks don’t really like tying themselves to any kind of crypto, and the currency has survived mass bouts of inflation before (‘70s). I would also be very sceptical that inflation would result in everyone becoming equally poor. Those holding assets will see their asset prices retain a significant portion of their wealth, as their prices bloat with the currency. Which is most of the rich. What WOULD happen, however, is that the debt levels in real terms, become much lower. Mass inflation means the total weight of debt becomes much lower in real terms- and this WOULD benefit the poor/debtors.

  13. Sweet Candy Romania got it back during the Civil War, and there really isn’t much reason for the Russians to fight to get it back. He did fuck up post WW2 Germany badly too though. East Germany should include Prussia and Silesia since it’s unlikely there’d be forced evictions of the Germans to the west.

TBF, Elon Musk has so many companies that is the hype falls in one, he can just move to another idea, and that (borderline insanity) has basically allowed him to be at the cutting edge of other tech companies. It’s kind of a different model to the rest of the tech industry, which is why he has a billion different companies in completely unrelated industries. I think one can argue he’s kind of a cockroach, in that he survives so much crap and keeps going, seemingly unscathed.

  24. The US economy was already the largest in the World by the Great depression. A better comparison would be Germany, which few genuinely thought would recover as quickly as it did to start WW2 (though this was partially deficit war economy spending). More importantly, China is expected to lose half its people by 2050 due to the 1 -child policy. That’s death-spiral level of bad.

Prime Time Fox is doing badly, though, at comparable (though higher) levels to CNN and MSNBC, which probably indicates people don’t like the prime-time format. Thing is that other than Rachel Maddow and (well WAS) Chris Cumomo, left-wing cable has few good personalities. And even they’re still pretty low compared to their Fox counterparts.

  30.  @Sara3346  The primary advantage of He-3 fusion is to allow for a neutron in fusion. The issue is that practically no work is being done on He-3 fusion because we don’t have much. But mining the Moon for He-3 effectively requires strip mining while somehow making sure Helium gas doesn’t escape the pockets between the rocks where it’s found. You’re better off using Li-D or B-H (lithium and boron) for aneutronic fusion instead. Or breeder fission reactors.

Yes, State Policy did speed things up in China, but it would have happened regardless without a heavy-handed approach- and possibly more sustainably, since China’s economy is unbalanced due to excessive spending on investment having created a massive real estate bubble.

  32.  @fedcoin1602  Canada has good land for Agriculture in the St. Lawrence Basin. The Prairies are resource rich and are dominated by Chernozem soil, making it a breadbasket. Central Mexico is more iffy, but is similar to Anatolia. Note that most of Mexico sucks, but the core is pretty decent.

  33.  @fedcoin1602  Yes, but that doesn’t mean the land is *bad*. All nations expanded out from their (generally geographically good) core to less viable areas. The US took over California and the Pacific Northwest. The Great Basin in particular is worse than Central Mexico, and definitely the lower-population Western Canada. Eastern Canada gives full control over the Great Lakes-St. Lawerence Seaway, connecting the Mississippi to the Northern Atlantic, and giving the USA free reign to do what it wants with the continent’s largest source of fresh water. The Northwest passage also is Canadian.

  35. Space colonization only works well for equatorial nations due to launch vehicles relying on using the Earth’s equatorial spin to reach space more cheaply. Alaska and Australia will never be the main hubs for space colonization. Even things like Orbital Rings tend to work better for equatorial nations than polar ones. However, the melting of the Arctic could allow the rivers of the Arctic to be useful for commerce, and people could slowly thaw the permafrost using solar mirrors into new habitable lands.

The suburbs are mostly swing districts or weakly Democrat. Also, the Spanish Civil War went the same way. The Fascists only controlled the more rural areas with little industry but produced most of the food. Turns out factories don’t operate without food. Food became the biggest propaganda tool for the Fascist side

  39.  @nikomann88  The Americans don’t have a vested interest in maintaining and strengthening Western Europe either- actually even less, because it geographically doesn’t make sense. Latin America is a good second option if you’re being mercantilistic- and China and India are larger long-term threats than Brazil, Mexico or Argentina can ever really be. Even Brazil has 2/3rds the population of the US, and it’s harder for them to make use of much scale due to geography.

  49. 16:30 I don’t understand why the Erie Canal isn’t taken seriously as a trade choke point and a unifying river system when you take the St Lawrence as one, which is pretty much entirely rapids from the Great Lakes to Montreal. The same lock system needed for the St. Lawrence would be used for the Erie Canal. New York would still be a massive hub for trade and commerce.
