I appreciate your research into Elvis' line. It would have been great to know his father's line as well. It is well known many Melungeons have blue eyes. It is a common trait. I did know Elvis had blonde hair but Melungeons existed from at least the 1600s, if not before. Most Melungeons married with causations which is why many white people today don't realize they have melungeon historty. My 3rd great grandfather was tall, dark, had black curly hair he straightened, blue eyes, lived in the melungeon area, and we have DNA matches to people with melungeon ancestry. My 2nd great grandfather had blonde hair. Most people tried to hide their melungeon ancestry back then. Johnny Cash also had African ancestry DNA as well as his wife. People went to great lengths to hide it. I don't know if Lincoln and Elvis have melungeon ancestry but it is definitely something I am interested in finding out. Thank you for your video.

Haha I had never heard of it either until I started doing my genealogy 😊

I have not done much research on my German ancestors because I have focused mainly on my Virginia, Italian, and Irish ancestors. When I think of Swarthy I think of my Virginia/Tennessee, Italian, and Mexican/Native American ancestors. Swarthy was described on some of their Civil War descriptions. I never really thought of swarthy for German people. This made me Google to confirm which members and I came across the FreeAfricanAmericans website that showed white women who enslaved/indentured themselves in contracts in order to marry and free African men. I would love for you to do a video on the subject. With all the division in the world today and the assumption mixed race babies of the earliest generations must have come from rape situations, I think stories of love would be a great video.

Wow! Insane response! Melungeons are a tri-racial group. That is why so many different looks from one family. Yes, that girl obviously had Native blood but mixed with white and black as well. My hair looks curly like in Danielle's pictures. My biological father, 3rd great grandfather (who had swarthy skin, curly hair, and blue eyes) may have been questionable. One of my distant relatives, Jack Goins of Rogersville, TN has done much research on Melungeons. He has traced his line the the White Lion of 1619. I also have Sizemore distant cousins who are Melungeons and trace their ancestry to George "Chief of All Sizemore" who has much Native American. I am extremely happy with Danielle making videos on the subject. I hope the whole Nation learns of the Melungeons. I know there are some black people trying to gatekeep Melungeons right now. They are a separate group. Probably Portuguese from the African colony that were enslaved and married Natives and indentured whites. They ARE NOT Creole like some are trying to make them out to be.

Yes, they always said they were Portuguese. The first ship with Africans to Virginia came from a Portuguese colony in Africa. There was over 350 Africans but only 20+ made it to Virginia. The rest were left on the ship. Some melungeon families have traced their heritage to some of the Africans on that ship. My guess is there were melungeon families that came from some of the remaining on that ship and started their own communities.

Wow! Thank you for this video. Don't let others try and discourage your searching for your family's history. My grandparents moved to San Francisco in 1947 from Chicago. I had heard of the Japanese going to camps but never the Italians. Maybe my mom never knew because she was born in 1940 and I don't know if we had family in California before 1947 but I would assume there would still be some discrimination and prejudice even after they were released. I know she hated our curly hair all her life and constantly straightened it. I thought she had a pretty nose but she hated that as well. This gives me some idea of maybe that is why.

@habbaticchio2468 Hitl*r wasn't blonde and blue eyed haha

I see so many pictures of slaves that looked white, like the children who went on tour (Rosa, Charlie, Rebecca of New Orleans) and of course Sally Hemings daughter. It would be so cool to hear from other people who found out their ancestors also passed for white. Also, those who looked white but chose to consider themselves black. I wonder what percentage of white Americans today have slave ancestors?
10
@free22 very true, I have always thought people of mixed race were the prettiest and got the best of both worlds. I just wish all the hate, tribalism, and fighting would stop.
10
@debismith6239 i wonder if you possibly have Roma/Gypsy heritage?

The older generations are so much stronger than the younger generations. It is sad to see how fragile our people have become. Seems like many live in a bubble and if America faces a threat of danger I am not sure we will come out of it okay.

Amazing video! Great guest

She doesn't look like a natural blonde to me. I am not sure what people consider white today. She looks like a mixed ethnicity as many of us do today.
8
I am looking forward to this series. There is a video by a writer who wrote about her melungeon ancestry. It is an hour long but great for research. She is entertaining and the time goes by fast. I believe the video is Kinfolks: searching for my Melungeon ancestry. She is an older blonde lady.

Organ grinder means butcher? Hahaha 😂 I never thought of it that way. I have only heard it as a person who plays the barrel organ, a street performer for tips.
7
Some people thought the Romas came from Egypt and is where the term Gypsies came from. I believe people think they were originally from India.
6
@EyEReign I wish you luck 😊 Many Goins are white and didn't even realize they had African heritage until DNA and genealogy. Many of the descendants of people "white passing" are discovering the secrets.
6
She was saying based on the times back then if you had black ancestry going back 6 generations they would classify you as Black even if that isn't how you identified. In her previous videos she said she knew she was Italian from her dad's side and Irish/French and possibly Native from her Mom's side. She didn't know she had an enslaved ancestor until she did her genealogy. As many of us know then you find out you have much more ethnicities than you were previously told.
6
Jim Crow wasn't just for Black people. The triple K didn't like Catholics either which includes Irish, Italian, and Mexican. Many people with Sicilian heritage have Middle Eastern DNA from North Africa and the Moors.
5
The mom looks albino and the daughter looks mixed (more on the white side.) That is the problem with people focusing on skin color and race. Here in the US most of us are mixed with something. People have in their hearts for certain races but you can't tell someone's history or heritage just by looking at them. I wish we could all be colorblind and focus on character instead.
5
A kid at school called me a wasp and I asked my mom what they meant. She said you aren't a wasp you are a wop haha.
5
I agree with you
5
It's interesting Italy is experiencing low birth rates. I remember when you were only allowed to have one child in communist China. Here in America during the 1800s people would have 12 kids. Then in the 50s it was common to have 5 children. Now, in the US they are promoting abortions, same-sex relationships, waiting to have children, encouraging women to work vs being a stay@home Mom which results in lower birth rate.
5
Crazy! Tupac must have had a crazy experience with that also.
5
The Goins have done a DNA study and I believe the Sizemores as well. The Sizemores have strong Native American in their family.
5
@Gothicblackchic very interesting stuff. Thanks for sharing
5
100%! it is sad to see. A black Principal in Atlanta was sued for separating the classes by skin color. This is definitely not heading in a good direction.
5
I hate when other people decide what language is and isn't acceptable to speak. They do that with the way southerners speak as well.
5
Yes, many people try to apply definitions from today to definitions from the past. As we all know definitions are changing daily even today. Lincoln was described as dark and swarthy. It doesn't mean he was black.
5
It would be cool if Roseanne came on to speak of her experience.
4
I agree, Melungeons had European features and dark skin with blue eyes. They said they were not black. It is also the wrong state. These people just looked mixed or probably albino.
4
They are also still trying to control who can have guns and who gets to eat well.
4
@nytn lol sitting here with my hair in four braids just to control it in this humidity and keep it out of my face. Not a style I wear in public
4
@nytn you should watch Ava Duvernay and Rosanne Cash's Finding Your Roots segments. I think you would like them.
4
Oh Wow! Are you familiar with the Mullins in Norman Ridge? There is even a Melungeon museum in Mahalia Mullin's old cabin.
4
Also, Sizemore, Blevins, Couch, Locklear and more. It is believed Heather Locklear has Melungeon heritage.
4
@creoleexplained a lot of melungeons have dark skin, European features, and blue eyes.
4
@EyEReign yes, John Goin, Geaween, Gowen, etc was married to Margaret Cornish Gowen and they had a son Mihil. I have DNA matches who are direct descendants.
4
Love this video! Seems like an interesting podcast. Yes! Be proud of each and every ancestor. They made you who you are. Some ancestors struggled in their lifetimes only to be put on the backburner now due to today's culture. You have every right to acknowledge your heritage!
3
@denisedevoto5703 haha I always wanted a nose job to but because it is long. My mom's was short and a little wider.
3
Many Sicilians have North African DNA so some assume they have black ancestry from the Moors but there were what was known as the blackamoors and the Arab Moors.
3
It is similar to the people who came here to get away from discrimination but then had a hierarchy here. Even the "old money vs new money". It is sad to see skin color being such a focus today. We were starting to rise above it in the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s.
3
Melungeons are a specific group in Tennessee, Virginia, Kentucky, and the Carolinas. They have specific features and surnames. I have never heard of them in Florida. They said they were Portuguese and have been traced to the 1916 ship in Virginia. I am curious how you have traced your ancestors to Melungeons from those locations? Which surnames are your family from?
3
@leclube2282 It was from a Portuguese colony in Africa so I could imagine they could be mixed with Portuguese as well. I also agree this could be part of why Melungeons said they were Portuguese.
3
My hope is one day everyone will realize just how mixed we all are. Some black people look at hate and assume racism but don't realize they could have ancestors who had the same trials during slavery. Their pain is valid as well. Racism was constructed to divide us but we have the power to reject it.
3
Yes, many French Huguenots had swarthy complexions as well.
3
Awesome video. Great story. You are right. He should do a movie about her and bring awareness to the Melungeon history. Another good story is the Pleasant vs Pleasant story in Virginia. A Quaker freed his slaves apon his death but of course some of his descendants fought this while others wanted them freed. The case lead to a important law change.

Great video! New Subscriber. I always thought of myself white as well. Growing up I only knew I was Irish-Italian. My great-grandparents came from Sicily. In the 70s tanning as dark as you could was popular. I could get pretty dark in the summer but in the winter I am the lightest shade of foundation you can buy. When I was 13 (in the 80s) my best friend invited me to spend the night. When her father got home I was told to leave and never come back because I wasn't white. As I was leaving, my friend told me her father was the leader of the kkk in Texas. That is when I found out the kkk didn't like Italians. After doing my DNA I found out another of my great grandfathers came from Mexico. My DNA shows I am mostly European but I have large mix of heritages. I hate when some black people say other ethnicities don't understand discrimination.
3
Many people talk about burning down plantations but I don't think they stop and think about the descendants of enslaved people that would feel a connection when they visit.
3
They are trying to erase and rewrite history
