Due to lack of leadership, the N1 rocket failed again and again, allowing the US to win the space race. Both countries have achieved impressive feats and that the space race was not only a competition, but also a huge stimulus for technological progress and scientific discovery. In the end, we all benefited from it!

After 1972 they didn't go back because there was no longer a compelling reason to do so. Kennedy's promise had been more than fulfilled. NASA was given other assignments. Exploring our solar system and beyond (Voyager 1 & 2). Building an international space station (IIS). Transporting it there and back (Space Shuttle). Landing on Mars. (Viking 1 and Viking 2, Opportunity Rover, Perseverance Rover). The Hubble and James Webb telescopes, this in collaboration with the European ESA. You see, the technology was there and has also grown. Musk and Bezos have started from scratch and are also participating in the Artemis project.

Apollo 7 was a manned flight around the earth with a smaller Saturn 1B rocket. Apollo 8 was the first manned flight around the moon. Apollo 9 tested the lunar module in orbit around the earth. Apollo 10 was a dress rehearsal without landing on the moon. Apollo 11 through 17 all landed on the moon except Apollo 13.

That the G7 must have had countless missions, why would the? And that technology is more advanced now, which does not apply to rocket propulsion. I also read the biographies of most astronauts and even of a flight director.
