  17.  @kh5736  Or any western country at the moment. The UK effectively outlawed all pistols and rifles decades ago only allowing farmers and 'sportsmen' (hunters) the use of shotguns. They, of course, forgot that the criminal element have no such worries about the use of illegal firearms, typified but the drive by shooting at a funeral in broad daylight just the other day!

  20. The use of an attenuator is always a good idea. As a cadet we were used to the .303 SMLE but we're introduced to the FN FAL using the NATO round. One of my mates suffered burst ear drums due to firing just 5 rounds of the FAL! Given that the new round will have such a high internal pressure will make the gun even louder using the military spec ammo but who are they expecting to go into combat against, Iron Man? I hope Ian took the opportunity to give that Spear a good clean before reassembly, that was disgusting and would have had him up on a charge in the British forces!

  23. I'm just wondering what the kick was like on the NATO chambered SMLE. As an air cadet I was taken to a range every now and then to fire off .303 Enfield's and one day they gave us experience of the FAL in 7.62 as well. To me the recoil was brutal compared to the .303 and the sound deafening to the point that one of my colleagues ended up with perforated eardrums (no Health and Safety in those days!)

  43.  @themcfunnel  Earlier versions of the SMLE were used in the Great War (1914-18) and was so good that the Germans thought that the British had many more machine guns than they actually had. When a squad of Brits laid down fire upon a particular target it was like a maxim gun!
