  2. Christopher Lee was a proper gentleman. The extras on the set of BBC's Ivanhoe were getting treated like dirt, even more than usual. Mr Lee spotted it, took the abusive puffed up little Assistant Director aside, and had a few quiet words. To this day, I never knew what he said to him, but you could actually see the AD deflating like a scolded child, after that it was all "Please" and "thank you" from him.

As it turns out, there is no level of cynicism that can exceed those of the showrunners. The MVPs are the zombie stunt performers, who stumble-run, fall, and mill around in just the right way to not have to eat the utterly incompetent lead character.

What's amazing is that Marvel and then Disney have consistently flubbed it by not promoting their sources. It's a brief instant of reality, threat, and potential consequence. Then they just forget all about it. That's it, folks, that's your 30 seconds of something remotely akin to engaging story-telling, and I suspect it was all down to the actor, episode director and choreographer. Not to Dave FailOnly.

  18. I nearly bailed when they introduced Nami as a Rey-style spunky grrlboss, but oh wow, am I glad I didn't. What an absolute joy it was to watch these characters develop and mesh together. It's manic, high energy, nuanced and affecting, with a real OOF in the feels in episode 7. A superb job by everyone involved.

  23. For those looking for a palette cleanser, see if you can find a copy of the 2010 series "Scooby Doo! Mystery Incorporated". It's respectful, classic and innocent, while also being gently and cleverly "updated for modern audiences" in all the right ways with some genuinely funny - but character based and all-ages-appropriate - lines delivered by a superb cast at the top of their games.

The modified ending was a clever way to arrive at exactly the same result without a convoluted McGuffin sub plot that really added nothing to the novel, while actually reinforcing the resolution of Manhattan's character. Normally when movies stray from their source, it's to dumb it down: I think Watchmen actually smartened it up. On the abilities of the heroes, bear in mind that they managed to survive actual crimefighting for years or decades. That does require a significant level of competence.

Well, with a $30m US / $65m global opening weekend, and meh viewer reviews, it'll struggle to reach $350m, maybe even $300m, i.e. a massive, calamitous bomb. Granted, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish opened with just $12.5m US, but it ran and ran and ran, wrecking the projection curve to reach $470m. Which shows what can happen when you produce something with real heart, passion and stakes that treats its paying audience with respect - and doesn't take a huge steaming dump on them on Twitter.
