Singapore has a fertility rate of 0.97, the second lowest in the world and the fertility rates among Singapore's three main ethnic groups are all below replacement level too - Chinese: 0.94, Indian: 0.97 and Malay: 1.83.

  3. His character and the character of Ali provided a good way to showcase the treatment of South and Southeast Asian migrant workers in the whole of Asia and not just Korea. I've already seen discourse emerge on the internet about the treatment of South and Southeast Asian migrant workers in Singapore, Malaysia and the Maldives (three countries that house a lot of SA and SEA migrant workers who are exploited quite severely). The important thing is that actual Singaporeans, Malaysians and Maldivians were the ones starting these discussions. I also remember coming across comments on Korean forums (using Google translate) where Koreans were talking about the hypocrisy of calling out anti-Asian violence in the US but failing to recognise that South and Southeast Asian migrant workers were being mistreated in Korea. I think this drama has reinforced these emerging discussions and it's made people more aware of reality regarding this issue.

  7. Curry originated in ancient India but curry is truly a pan-Asian dish. Many Asian countries have their own versions of it, developed using their own indigenous ingredients and spices. You could really do a curry tour of Asia and try different curries from around the continent, I wonder if anybody has done that before. There are also curry dishes outside of Asia developed through the migration of Indians and other groups such as those in the UK and the Caribbean.

  13.  @reach2prasanna  India is most definitely multiethnic. Just because they're all native to India doesn't erase the fact that they are all from different ethnic groups. You can easily break India up into 20 countries and it would make sense. You can't do that in a country like South Korea or Japan.

  15.  @asianprince8718  Not like the US or UK at all. Singaporeean society is a mix of Chinese, Malay, Indian and Eurasian people and influences. They've all influenced one another and Singaporean society basically revolves around CMIO (Chinese-Malay-Indian-Other). It is the most successful multiethnic nation in Asia, so much so that a survey revealed most Singaporeans believe class division is what most will experience discrimination for, not race. Nobody in Asia comes close to Singapore.

There are many other Burmese Muslim groups living in peace in Myanmar such as the Kaman, Bamar Muslims, Panthay (Chinese Muslims) and Burmese Indian Muslims. The Rohingya issue is due to ethnicity/history and the military is responsible for the genocide.

  23. Whenever it's a mixed person, it's almost exclusively someone who is half white. This is the same across other parts of Asia too like Singapore, Sri Lanka, Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia and Sri Lanka - all of which have a history of selecting Eurasian candidates to represent themselves at major pageants.

This isn't just a developed nation issue anymore when we look at how developing Asia is facing a fertility crisis too. Thailand has the second lowest fertility rate in SEA and it is a developing nation. Bangladesh, one of the poorest nations in Asia, has a fertility rate of 1.95 which is below replacement level. The only reason they brought their fertility rate down is due to educating their people which allowed the government to teach their people about family planning, including contraception. So fertility decline isn't something can be avoided, it's going to happen. The goal should be to maintain a low fertility rate instead of letting it drop which is what's happening everywhere. If a nation can maintain a fertility rate of 1.9, still below replacement level, that would be good as opposed to letting it drop to below 1 which is what's happening in Singapore and South Korea.

  25. Oh they're definitely different but there is no denying that there is overlap between the two spheres though. Imperial Japan wanted to unite the East Asian Cultural Sphere (East Asia + Vietnam) and Indian Cultural Sphere (South Asia + Southeast Asia) and form what they termed "Greater East Asia". We see that overlap quite visibly in places like Singapore and Malaysia which are home to large ethnic Chinese and ethnic Indian communities. As another user said, Asia is actually a gradient, a group of cultures that bleed into each other at the peripherals of each subregion.

  27. This situation has arisen primarily in the US where there is a need to categorise people based on appearance as a result of the country's history fraught with poor race relations. In the US, "Asian" means East Asian and so other Asians who don't fit that image are excuded. This definition also exists in many other Western countries such as Australia and Canada. However, there is much greater awareness that despite looking physically different, Indians and other South Asians are still "Asian" just not the type of "Asian" people immediately think of. In the UK, it's the complete opposite where South Asians are seen as the default Asian. For South Asians, however, we are aware of the sheer diversity of our community. I am of ethnic Sri Lankan descent and anybody aware of Sri Lanka's diversity will know there are a variety of ethnic groups (Sinhalese, Tamil, Moor, Malay, Eurasian, Vedda, Chinese etc.) on the island. For other people of Sri Lankan descent, they know I am Sri Lankan but for many non-Sri Lankans or non-Asians there is a struggle in understanding certain characteristics of my appearance. I have epicanthic folds (or as understood in a Sri Lankan context, "Malay eyes" or what some may call "almond eyes"). As a result, I have had people assume I belong to other groups are mixed with Southeast Asian groups. People think that almond eyes or East Asian features only exist in East Asia or Southeast Asia but that's not the case. On "South Asian TikTok", I see South Asians who look stereotypically "South Asian", East Asian, Southeast Asian and West Asian. Our features are so diverse. The idea one is "Asian" based on how they look like doesn't make sense to me and it doesn't make sense to my Southeast Asian friends either. I have Southeast Asian friends who are diverse. One of my SEA friends could be mistaken for "Indian" and I knew a Timorese girl who had dark brown skin and round eyes. A Thai girl on Quora went viral on the platform for encapsulating SEA diversity in one sentence, "There is no other place in the world where you will find Chinese-looking people using their right hand to eat rice or Indian-looking people eating noodles with chopsticks". Asia is a diverse place. The concept of "Asian" is simply about geography and that is how it is understood in Asia. The reason why "Asian" becomes a term to describe appearance outside of Asia is because Asian ethnic groups are minorities. It's a trivial issue to focus on.

  31. Most people know Kdramas for their romance plots and thus there are many people who may not be fond of them because they have only seen a facet of Kdramas. Kdramas first became popular in other parts of Asia in the 2000s and the ones that gained popularity back then were all romance dramas. Dramas with dark themes were never popular back then. Kdramas, at the time, were considered family-oriented and a culturally suitable and family-friendly alternative to American films/shows and were the reason why they gained popularity outside of Korea in other parts of East, South and Southeast Asia. So when Kdramas were introduced internationally, the romance ones were the ones which received attention because producers already knew that romance sells (as seen in Asia).

  33.  @danielyu6399  What they're talking about is the lopsided ratio of women to men. There aren't enough women for every man in China. So you can't create families or anything like that. This has created a demographic and social issue in the country. So that has led to the establishment of the Asian migrant bride business in China (which also exists in other parts of East Asia), where women from neighbouring countries like Nepal, Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar, Laos and Christian women from Pakistan are sent to rural parts of China through marriage bureaus to make up for the shortage of Chinese women in rural China. Chinese marriage bureaus specialise in foreign Asian women because they are the closest cultural proxy to a traditional Chinese woman so they'll still maintain those traditional family values that exist in Asia pre-globalisation. This phenomenon first emerged in Japan in the 1980s and eventually emerged in South Korea, Taiwan and now exists in China too.

The first humans in Asia gave rise to the ancient group collectively known as East Eurasians during the Pleistocene 2. There were two main sub-branches of East Eurasians, the lighter skinned East Asian-looking farmers and the darker skinned Veddoid hunter gatherers (represented by groups like the Andamanese, Orang Asli and Paniya). All of these groups are distantly related to one another. 3. Southeast Asia was first settled by the Hoabinhians (dark skinned Veddoid-type group) in addition to other groups like the Negritos, later East Asian farmers moved south from China into Southeast Asia intermixing with the locals to create modern-day Southeast Asians. 4. In South Asia, the Veddoid groups mostly mixed with the West Eurasian-related people who brought IE languages to create modern-day South Asians. Some also mixed with the Austro-Asiatic people and so on. 5. The ancestors of the Jomon emerged from the same clade that gave rise to the Andamanese, Orang Asli, AASI, Hoabinhian etc. and settled in Japan who later intermixed with the East Asian-looking Yayoi to create modern Yamato Japanese.

  35. 100% agree, anybody that has studied population genomics will know how meaningless "race" is. There are four broad ancestral groups: East Eurasian, West Eurasian, West/East African and Khoisan. Everybody in the world today descends from one or more of these populations (which can be broke down into several different genetic lineages). So the idea that people can be divided into "races" makes no sense because people like Tamils and Native Americans for example carry both West Eurasian and East Eurasian genetic markers whilst Malagasy carry East Eurasian and West/East African genetic markers and Arabs carry West Eurasian genetic makers and Aboriginal Australians carry East Eurasian genetic markers. It just shows how widespread these four ancestral lineages are in the world that "race" makes no sense. Ethnicity which is defined by DNA, culture and language makes way more sense. In Asia, it seems people will identify by both nationality and ethnicity but in the West, especially in the US, people like to define themselves through "race" (which makes no sense).

  37. India is quite interesting, it's called a subcontinent because each of their states are divided along ethnic lines so it's like a continent made up of smaller countries. Each state has its own ethnic group, language and culture. They really are quite diverse. It's a shame they don't use that to boost their soft power.

That's why the Singaporean government has allowed strict, regulated and limited immigration which favours migrants from Malaysia, China (inc. Hong Kong) and India due to ethnic similarities but there has been rising resentment from Singaporeans towards immigrants. Hard to please everybody especially since the fertility rates for the local Singaporean Chinese and Indian communities are below 0.

Tbh, the CCP is really problematic and their behaviour in the Asia-Pacific towards India, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Vietnam, Philippines, Japan and Australia is very concerning. What they did last year is very concerning, it shows that they aren't going to stop. They're so antagonistic and I don't like that all. The CCP supporters on the internet are also very loud, problematic and extremely irritating. I can't even speak to my friend, who lives in mainland China, because the CCP became even more controlling last year with internet access.

  43. Yes but Asian isn't a race. Asian is more of a term to describe geography and culture. For example, Imperial Japan used pan-Asianism as an ideology in hope that they could unite the various parts of Asia that are culturally Sinic (Chinese) and Indic (Indian) during WWII. So their hope was to create a union centered on Asian culture and practices and led by Japan. As you can see the use of the word "Asian" in this context is in reference to culture. It's really outside of Asia in the West and Africa where "Asian" is used in a racial sense. Priyanka is biracial because she's half Japanese and half Indian. At a basic level, Japanese and Indians are genetically different from one another. One is East Asian, the other is South Asian. Hope this helps.

The truth is Asian is just geography. People native to Asia are Asians. All of the people in those countries are Asian as is everybody else on the continent. Also, India culturally influenced Southeast Asia (Thailand, Indonesia, Cambodia etc.) too. Most of South and Southeast Asia is part of the Indian Cultural Sphere. They all have the same cultural root. There is a lot of cultural overlap across Asia. Many outside of Asia are unaware of that.

  48. Singaporeans as a whole are more open to interracial marriage compared to other Asians. Singaporean-Chinese, Singaporean-Indians and Singaporean-Malays are more open, especially the former two who don't have religious restrictions. This is different to the US where you are from which is home to East and South Asian immigrants that have come directly from places like China and India.

She could pass as Assamese or Khasi. Also, as the other user said, Thailand is also diverse. There are Chinese looking Thai, stereotypical looking Southeast Asian Thai, Thai Malay, some look almost like Indians - especially in the south). You're just generalising a whole region which has a long history of human settlement.
