  5.  @ChristianWagner888  Since it just uses apt-get, if the dependencies that you need for that particular program are in the official repositories, then yes, that is true. It's when they aren't that you have to hope they didn't omit them. Hopefully a rare circumstance, but I'd double check it to be sure.

However there's no need to strawman and claim people were saying the opposite when they're merely speaking on the frivolity of this particular suit. You bring up distilled water, but do you have any idea how hot coffee can get? Sounds like you're assuming it'll get hotter when you're failing to take into account how the water is boiled and then run through the coffee grounds. Yes, that's the type of coffee maker they were using. Her lawsuit was indeed frivolous and I wouldn't be surprised if a proper investigation revealed that she burned herself in some other way and wanted someone to cover her medical costs. Because surely no one could be so stupid as to intentionally burn themselves for money, I would hope.

  8. I've even seen some crazy people use tcc in place of gcc, a few using uclibc for desktop use, and there's BusyBox and ToyBox for replacing the utilities. Have you seen Rob Landley's talk on getting a minimal Linux up and running?

  14. I always use spaces around pipe characters so I can just do `awk '{ print $2; }'. I just checked and my top three are `cd`, `lrt` and `exit`. With `lrt` being my shell function to acquire a list of reverse time sorted files and display only the N most recent, where the default N is 10. Of course I also have bare `ls` and my alias of `ll` in that list too which edges out `cd` even if you add in number 18 on the list, the alias `..`. Since it counts aliases, `cls` is in the top 20 as well. I guess I don't use `...` or `....` or `.....` as much as `..`, but those are handy aliases to have for changing down multiple directories. Of course it's been a slow week, so make and gcc didn't even make the top 20, although I did find `...` when I expanded to 50.

  15. I've always had a problem with brevity. Probably why nearly every question I ask gets ignored. Back when I learned how to type in middle school the software that our school used would time you. So we'd compete with ourselves and with each other and while I wasn't the fastest typist I could easily do stream of consciousness typing at nearly 60wpm. This one girl in the class could regularly type at 120wpm and with a very minimal error count. Might be what holds me back because I didn't like the noise the program emitted when you had to use the backspace key and I wanted it to look perfect in one take. But boy was it an unholy beep. Anyhow, my open ended question is, what's the best?

  16.  @DarkGladiator  She just had fast fingers, I guess. Though, this was the 90's so maybe she practiced a lot at home given that the internet wasn't as widely spread back then. For my family, we didn't even get a computer until my brother went off to college and got his second one giving us his first. It was an HP that ran Win98 and had a built-in dialup modem.

  17. This is a neat toy, but as others have pointed out, dialog exists, and these scripts don't correctly write to the terminal. It monkeys up the buffer by merely scrolling the window with each refresh instead of creating a proper view window the way most ncurses apps do. I also noticed that you have to kill the script to exit all but one of them, possibly another problem.

  18. I agree that normal users should not build from source. I often do it, regardless of whether an app is available elsewhere, even in my own distro's repositories, because I like to see how things work and occasionally modify them. When I first starting using a Pi as my only computer. (I now have a proper desktop, in case anyone asks, but spent four years with only a Pi.) I had to modify the PS1 emulator I was using to make it recognize my cheapo gamepad's joysticks. That was fun. Now I use RetroArch and it kicks butt as well as recognizes and allows configuration of everything.

  22. I usually banish the music player to the last workspace. Might be another useful tip for you, you can start GUI programs with & at the end of the command to background them, and if you forget, focus the terminal, type ctrl+z then bg N where N is the number the terminal reports for that process and the terminal is useful again or you can close it. Although, I use bash, where bg is a builtin.

  32. If you've got an old computer that can run FreeDOS, then I'd really like to see you review Menuet. It's an OS written entirely in assembly and it has an actual usable GUI, but the most important characteristic is that it fits on a single floppy disk. If you don't want to use real hardware for such a thing, then I guess a VM would work too, but it'd be a lot cooler on real hardware.

  33.  @walkman1269  It would probably make the transition easier for Windows users to try using open source programs on Windows first, and then once they've changed their entire workflow to then switch to Linux. LibreOffice may not be entirely compatible, and that's by Microsoft's design, but most things will work and I hate to say it, but exporting to PDF is the best way to share documents with Windows users. If you use Photoshop, then try GIMP, but obviously don't uninstall Photoshop, use them side by side. Learn the ins and outs of each. Do this for everything you can and eventually you'll be ready while not having thrown yourself in the deep end.

  35. No, it's a perfect example of what's wrong with Rustaceans. They want to rewrite everything in Rust with barely any knowledge of what they're replacing or how it works. The result is often inferior to the original while looking pretty with all the colors of the rainbow. One I keep complaining about that no one has a good response to is ripgrep doesn't properly handle PCRE, so certain searches, which for me are somewhat common, don't get handled correctly and it either will find nothing or have a completely wrong list of output. It doesn't matter how fast something runs if it produces incorrect output.

  36. This is great for integrating more Windows users. They could use it there and eventually switch to Linux with less effort because what they use on one is on the other. I'll have to recommend it to newbies. My method is to use less to browse contents if I need to see what's in them before decompressing, then to tar -vxf archive. The version of less I use can recognize many archive formats and does all the necessary work to list for me. So I can do `less archive.{zip,tar.{gz,bz2,xz,*},7z}` and probably more that I never encounter, and tar handles -vxf without needing the switch to determine format.

  40. I look at the systray as a general settings and quick info kind of section of the UI. If an app infiltrates that area against my wishes I'd view that app as malicious and delete it. Otherwise, I'd say it works as intended for me. Volume controls, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, network indicator, clipboard, printers, keyboard indicator since my keyboard doesn't indicate NumLock, notifications and media player status are what I've got and I feel those are all necessary and have finagled the clipboard that way on more than a few occasions to reorder stuff I want to paste.

I was one of the people that mentioned using a separate partition for the /home folder too, but you didn't see my post, nor will you see this one, but that's okay, most of my posts are ignored and the few that aren't ignored are usually only responded to by people that hate my posts. At least, the ones that YouTube doesn't delete anyway.

  45. By its very definition, stable means it doesn't change. Like everything else, there are tradeoffs. I would say, if you can specifically control how updates are done, then only update that which is necessary for newer software you want to test and don't update things like kdenlive. This is, in part, why I don't update unless there's a security patch that needs applying. Quite a bit of the software I use is also compiled from source, so if I really need to fix something and there's no patch yet I could just do it and not break anything.

  49.  rs_  If by behavior you mean keybindings, then yeah, that sounds pretty likely. If a new user just adds a bunch of plugins without thinking about it, I can see that. Good reason to start with the defaults and add slowly from there.

  50. @JM It's not about whether it will go bad, it's about being able to get higher capacities for it. If you bought a laptop with 4gb of RAM and 5 years later want to upgrade to 8, well, with most laptops that aren't Mac's you can. And even just doubling the RAM could be a huge boost for performance.
