There are differences, but they are united in their contempt for us and democracy. The Dems show they have a spine whenever it comes time to oppose progressives and some are stupid enough to admit they prefer Trump to the left (not that it's cost them anything so far).

  12. Religion and tradition are never acceptable justifications for ANY violations of human rights. Slavery is also endorsed by the texts of all Abrahamic religions but forbidden by all civilized societies. We're all held to the same baseline ethical standards regardless of our beliefs.

  21. Patriarchy is the domination of an older man over all of his human property including his kids (even if they are adults). Fighting it means opposing every part of that, from the misogyny, to the childism, to the infantilization of younger adults. Incidentally, we also cannot tackle global warming without addressing discrimination of the young.

Are we really surprised by certain types of bad behavior when every time guys take a piss they have a reminder that our society views THEIR consent as irrelevant normally (and a punchline if they end up on the wrong side of the law)? We say 🍇 is bad, but we sure don't act like we believe it as a country. Nor do we think of men and boys as human enough to even bother remembering that hurt people hurt people.

  23. They're just a couple steps short (for now) of branding us with schwarzes Dreieck (sorry for the German. YouTube doesn't like honest discussions of history in English). I can't get people around me to take this seriously. Even my anti-Trump mom is adamant that even taking away my meds just won't happen. The amount of denial of the reality of our situation is incredibly dangerous.

  24. @raedaze  it's not even about cynicism. It's about being accurate with how we describe the dynamic we're dealing with. We can't afford to mislead ourselves, even if unintentionally. By all means, call your representatives (they may comply out of habit if nothing else), but let's not kid ourselves into thinking we have types of leverage that we don't, or we'll waste time and energy we cannot afford right now on fruitless efforts. For example, I'm of the opinion that we are well past the point where normal street protests are going to do any good for us (especially with mass media bending the knee preemptively). Conservatism has always been (and was created to be) an enemy of democracy and we need to acknowledge that the oligarchs are being offered a deal where they never have to worry about another election ever again (and that they cared less than we want to pretend they did before this, what with their ability to move into lobbying if they ever lost their seat).

  25. Maybe this is me being naive, but I think they're focusing their resources on female cats BECAUSE one male can impregnate so many female cats. Unless you can get nearly every male cat in the area, neutering them does almost nothing to impact the reproduction rates because the female cats will just get impregnated by another male and the result will be the same. If you only have the resources to neuter X number of cats, it makes sense to only neuter female cats because they (not the male cats) are the bottleneck for the population and neutering males will have virtually no effect. Maybe I'm being naive about the people in your area, but that is an entirely logical course of action, so jumping to assigning bad motives seems premature.

  42. Keep in mind that not all FGM is equal, but is all wrong. Circumcision is not the same as clitoral removal, of course, but not all FGM is that. I do have to push back on one point, though. BOTH treat the child as sexual property.
