@KemetledAfrica The difference is none of those were documentaries. They were Hollywood productions loosely based on historical events. If you're referring to when Elizabeth Taylor played her in a Hollywood MOVIE, the studios put whatever star was popular at the time in the leading roles because they're MOVIES, not a documentary. In documentaries about her they show her images from statues and coins. If they have an actress to walk across the screen briefly, it's always someone that would look very similar to how she did according to the historical record. The actress being mixed has nothing to do with the historical accuracy of this DOCUMENTARY that's intentionally portraying her as something they know she wasn't. Edit: If they wanted to do black Pharaohs they have the entire, though shortly lived, 25th dynasty. There's no need to mess with the 30th.

@reek4062 How much are you being paid to troll all the comment sections of every creator talking bad about this show? Do you know first that this person is actually male and secondly that they've never had sex because that's what incel means? Involuntary celibate. So you've stalked them in real life since they reached puberty to know such intimate facts about their life, and you think they are the problem.

I've got to say, I loved Colbert's expressions throughout the interview. You could tell he was not happy and was biting his tongue. Unlike Oswalt, Colbert is a HUGE Tolkien nerd. He can recite everything from the Silmarillion from memory. As much as I don't like his show or his takes, this was clearly painful for him. Which on the other hand I'm glad it was. He sold out to do the interview in the first place, but at least everyone could tell how he was really feeling deep down. The question about Elf hair and his reaction to the answer are chef's kiss.

@MatthewCYN15 The show he was in previously is also by RTD. Disperu also said in this review that he's difficult to understand and highlighted some lines. There's little doubt why RTD picked him looking at the show and it's not rude to say someone is difficult to understand if they are. The truth isn't rude, it's simply the truth.
26
@MatthewCYN15 "Do aliens think like humans"? You clearly don't watch the show. Old or NuWho. The reason he has a female companion is to be his conscious. To make up for the emotions he knows he doesn't have. To learn about them and the reasoning behind them. That's the original. Now after hundreds of years he's learned them himself, to a much greater degree, and has become very human himself.

@KimmminemWest We know it wasn't black. And yes, we kinda do. We know what Macedonians looked like and what Greeks looked like, which is what she was. Mediterranean, not sub saharan African. We have written descriptions of her in the historical record, we have coins with her image on them, we have descriptions of her very inbred ancestry, etc.
21
@DAISY-cm8hc Are you seriously trying to claim the play Macbeth is historically accurate? Romeo and Juliet was based on real people too, but nothing in that play took place in real life. Do you really believe Shakespeare somehow knew Cesar said Et tu to Brutus? Shakespeare is fiction. A documentary is non fiction just like a biography is non fiction. Fiction means not true. The director said she intentionally called it a documentary for political reasons. So you're defending her with claims when she made it very clear it's a historic documentary.
20
@KimmminemWest Because she didn't. She was not sub saharan African. Period. We know what she looked like. Documentary means historical facts. It means non fiction, the truth. That's not the truth.
20
They LOST! They didn't save anything. That's the worst part of what they're saying.
19
OMG yes! Love Viggo.
19
@Amaranthine1000 You lasted longer than me. I dipped out after the 3rd episode. It was just not The Doctor and that's who I watched for.
19
@jneumy566 But they aren't writing it. It's already written. All they should do is fill in blanks and adjust the material to fit the medium. You are correct that they are writing their own story, but they never should have so it's just more evidence of their own egos rather than just inexperience.
18
@TroySavary I don't think you understand this is a video and commentary about episode 1. Did any of that happen in that episode? No. Was the story in that episode that he abandoned them? Yes. The problem is that because the first episode is bad and takes this route with the characters, it will cause people to not watch anymore of the show. It's a perfect example of how writing out an entire series with the assumption that you're owed the audience backfires constantly. You destroy the previous main characters that are why people even want to watch it in the first place, and somewhere down the road, attempt to redeem them, but the built in audience is already gone because you destroyed the characters they care about. Doing it completely off screen is even worse.

I WAS a massive Disney fan. My Christmas tree is Disney themed with ornaments that I'd purchase from every trip so it held those wonderful memories. I loved all the classics (Lady and the Tramp is my favorite) and couldn't wait to go see their latest animated movies. I was one of those people. I don't give a crap what they do now, and will never step foot in those parks again. The experience has declined so much, they are a shadow of their former self. They're destroying the classics I loved by removing love as the driving force. I hope chasing that 2% of the audience was worth losing people like me who never batted an eye at dropping serious cash.
18
@MatthewCYN15 Says someone who in other posts it's clear hasn't watched the series before because you've asked some pretty dumb things to have seen it in the past. It wasn't racist in the 70s which again you'd know if you watched it.
14
That look directly at the camera afterwards is gold.
13
@jimmynaylor1759 There are tons of fantasy books that would fit their vision so much better than Tolkien. Even ones consider high fantasy. The fact they even acknowledge that you can't tell the difference by having the human male lift her hair to check her ears shows they have no idea what they are doing. Most of the Dwarves seem to be the only thing they got mostly right as far as costumes. I'm not sure why the humans look like they should be in the Middle East 2-3000 years ago.
12
Well they killed her husband who's also an Elf and her brother. Maybe it's just female Elves that are invincible.
12
That's about hippies that were doing a Hobbit fest kind of thing. It was rather disturbing and he wanted no part of it.
11
Worse really. They've made the LotR impossible to occur. It can't happen at this point because key figures won't be born.
11
@shaneoconnor1407 They could have easily avoided that by following the source material which would resulted in a large audience that would make Bezos happy.
10
This was always going to be a problem with her having so many companions. Pretty much every companion of The Doctor has a tragic ending. With so many there's no real bonds created making everything very unemotional.
10
@nadw2354 Oh, you think so? The rights were partially sold during his lifetime. The animated movie and Tom show came of it. He hated them. "Super fans" at the time we're hippies that dressed up like Hobbits, which he also hated.
9
@oliviamaynard9372 Because he husband led the armies. It lessens her and at no time after she enters Middle Earth is she described how she's being portrayed. She didn't traipse around Middle Earth hunting baddies. The Elves left most baddies to men which is explained by all dragons being slayed by men. They only engaged when things crossed into their territories. They are making her human instead of Elvish. It's not in Tolkien's work is the "big deal".
9
@cubablue602 Galadriel didn't lead armies and leave her kingdom unprotected to hunt something nobody, including her, knew was a risk. Sauron was in the East building his armies so them having her running around Middle Earth hunting orcs is not even remotely true. Tell me, since she didn't lead armies, didn't do battles, and didn't leave her kingdom why would she be wearing armor or have a need for it?
9
@oliviamaynard9372 George Washington is a historical figure that was real so no having him portrayed by a black person would not be okay anymore than having MLK portrayed by a white person would be. Every job has requirements. When it comes to acting those requirements include body size, race, facial features, and even hair color. Even in literature characters are described in great detail. Idiars Elba has already said he will not play Bond so your analogy that you're basing everything is false. There used to be a time when art was respected unfortunately people seem to thing anything created is for other people to rip off.
9
I know! They're mindless creatures whose only desire is to kill. That's why the one Sauromon was able to make was so scary. Not only could he travel by daylight. He had intelligence. Limited of course, but still.

Hallmark. There’s a reason it’s still around. It’s after Christmas so if you’re lucky it’ll be a mystery one.
8
@superluigi6968 Which isn’t this time period. This is hundreds of years before that. Even you show unintentionally why this makes no sense. They started looking and investing after a single fight. Here they’re fighting multiple times but the Jedi somehow don’t know about them? Go rewatch the prequels. Some didn’t believe but a few were still looking into things anyway. Edit: The Emperor wasn’t able to get in the Senate because they thought there were no Sith. They knew there were after Darth Maul in the first one. Him being able to mask himself was part of his power. He was powerful enough to do that making him impossible to detect and more powerful than any Jedi.
8
@joesmutz9287 The difference is that George had the same role in GoT. He left in season 5 or 6 to "work" on the next books and that's when the story went hell. So there's already a track record when it comes to his involvement in it.
8
It's making the good guys really be the bad guys and it's not Sauron's fault because he really tries not to become that. It's what Disney did with Maleficent. What they are doing is disgusting and intentional.
8
It's shocking that actors are now making everything about them personally rather than portraying a role. If they are being themselves and their personal stuff impacts the part, that makes them terrible actors by definition.
8
@pjetrs Amazon subscription is mostly for the shipping and other perks. Their subscriptions aren't directly tied to their streaming service like Netflix. Their success for that is based on hours watched.
7
Is saying you couldn't condemn an animal for killing to survive humanizing them? That's the same with orcs. Just because that's someone's opinion on how a Catholic responded to a question, doesn't make it what Tolkien ment. A Christian isn't supposed to condemn anything. That's God's job, and that's how he answered.
7
That's the odd thing with this one. Amazon and Bezos said they wanted it to attract a 100 million worldwide audience. It really is that Bezos wanted a cultural phenomenon like GoT was for his own ego. He wanted that with his name and company attached to it. So no, this isn't like Obi Wan where they're intentionally destroying established characters so people will like their new ones so they get all the merchandise money. It really was intended to be good. Just they've all forgotten what good is. Edit: The Little Platoon does a great explanation. It's a 2 hour video, but his take on why Bezos and the showrunners made this is the first little bit in the introduction. I think it's insightful. He makes the case, that unlike other shows where the people associated with it don't know or like the source material, he has no doubt they truly love Tolkien. They just don't understand why.
7
This is NOT Tolkien's language. If you pay attention, it's pretty regular English. It's not written poetically. There aren't these sayings or metaphors everywhere. It just seems like it is because of the setting. Meanwhile, they're trying to make it sound like Shakespeare.
6
@darktenor4967 That's from the books. Book II Chapter 7: The Mirror of Galadriel. Why would they need a "more faithful adaptation". More faithful than Tolkien's own writing? Edit: The only thing added was her knowing how many times he'd worn the Ring.
6
I think it's more talking about her own abilities. She can see inside his mind, but keep hers closed to him. He's not in possession of the One at that time. She goes on right after that in the book, saying she knows his plans for the Elves. It's after that that Frodo sees the ring and she explains it to him.
6
Most likely the way they're intending on spinning this.
6
@AlexandreLima-yu5jh No. She was being court martialed for disobeying orders. Orders given by the council. They never said anything about "resources" or even the 2 pilots she got killed. Only that she disobeyed orders. Leia sanctioned the mission supposedly which she doesn't have the authority to do as a single Senator. Meaning they accepted Leia's authority over them like she's the Emperor. Edit: What do you think "unsanctioned mission" means? It means disobeying orders.
6
It was founded by Elrond's brother, Elros, who chose to be human because they were half Elves. So yes, you're correct.
6
@reek4062 First, caps is yelling. Please stop yelling. Secondly this show isn't based on Jackson's movies, they're based on Tolkien's books (supposed to be). If they reference the movies at all, they'll be sued. They are desecrating Tolkien's life's work.
5
I've watched the same movie over and over and never tired of it. I'm always excited when I see it come on. I've read books like that too. Just because you know what's coming, doesn't mean it's still not spectacular.
5
My idea was each season focus on the fall of each group. They all fell. The Elves due to Celebrimbor's desire to out shine his ancestor, The Black Numenorens who chose to follow Melkor in their desire to be immortal, the Dwarves to their greed. Ending with the last battle of Elves and men that saw Sauron lose the One Ring. Each could start with Sauron gifting them the rings, except the Elves would be them making them. Edit: Unfortunately the showrunners want to retell the Fellowship which isn't what the 2nd Age is about at all. They've already destroyed enough of the canon that Lord of the Rings wouldn't have happened.
5
@LeoS300 Don't forget there's also now black girls in the Lost BOYS in Peter Pan. I seriously hate this decade and can't wait for it to be over.
5
@lauri3548 Absolutely not because that would be against the lore and against everything the author intended. Write your own fanfic fantasy and have published. You're free to do that. You're not free to take the work and art of another and do whatever you wish. That's called plagiarism and copyright infringement.
5
@lotsofspots They weren't colonized or subjugated. Whenever Egypt would get conquered the new rulers wouldn't move their people in and push out Egyptians. That would have been incredibly dumb because they were far more advanced than most other areas. They did tax them and take control of the coveted trade routes that went through there. There's little deviation in their DNA throughout those periods. When the 25th dynasty ruled, there wasn't a sudden influx of sub saharan DNA into the Egyptian people.
5
@KimmminemWest She had the same colored skin as most Mediterranean people because that's what she was. She was not sub saharan African however which is what this documentary is claiming.
5
Here!
5
@teamfossil6312 Her finding them somewhere makes sense since she can just fly around in space super fast. Nick finding them one doesn't unless because she reports to Fury he was supposed to relay the information.
