  3. Error of logic. If it first is found in Barcelona last year you cannot assume it came from China where it was not found until November. We need to test samples from many places to get an idea. Yes the connection to bats seems a strong flag, but there are other bats all over the world. It is possible the virus came from a bat in another country. We must not jump to conclusions.

  5. This week in Virology has some of the Scientist on the team in a long interview. If. you listen to them, what they did makes a lot of sense, while in quarantine they were on zoom calls with their Chinese counterparts, no time was wasted. They visited places and looked at tests. done. They got to ask all the questions and explore all the options with the Chinese teams. Excellent discussion with more attempts scheduled. Understand that Virologists in every country talk to each other regularly and visit each other. There are American and European virologists who have 17 year and longer relationships with virologists in China. It is all a big surprise to us, but they have been collaborating for years to do what they could to protect global health.

  7. If left to itself long enough of course it could mutate, although most mutations are useless and generally tend to make the virus less virulent. If we can vaccinate enough people to make further spread impossible the virus will fizzle out in the human population. Herd immunity is only possible with vaccinations including vaccinating new people born into the population.

  10. Again you attack WHO for waiting for definitive evidence of aerosolization. But then you don't take them to task for the the actual error of not applying the precautionary principle. You have over and over again said that we don't know until we get the results of good trials. I do support you 99.99%. But once in a while I think a little error creeps in. Who is perfect? no-one. That is why we do science together.

  11. I must be a rebellious Canadian... I got Pfizer 10 weeks ago and just went back 2 days ago and opted for Moderna. If it had been available I would have asked for the Oxford Vaccine. Both times I attended the vaccine place which was in the local sports centre, the organization was really good and all the helpers very very upbeat and friendly. I asked them if people were enthusiastic and the response was a big yes. I could see crinkly eyes. It seems to me that Quebec takes Public Health seriously. We have a great computerized system now and results from tests etc are automatically sent to the relevant doctor(s).

  12. In the 80's I had "Post-viral Depression" and it was just like this, weakness exhaustion, feel a bit better, take a shower and fall back in bed. Later one can take a shower and some small task, then stop and rest until the next day. I was lucky I got over it after 6 weeks, but it was the thing with the impossible name - I sat in bed and read books or knitted so I was soothed and not anxious about it. I took tiny steps and it seemed to help.

  13. Hi, didn't you just report that the modellers came up with an R0 of 3.5 to 6.6? After putting in the data of what has actually been happening over the last 8 weeks. That means the doubling time is much shorter. Spreading much faster.

  17. It is rather encouraging to see the faces of other viewers. It does cheer one up to see the friendly faces. I am not so inclined to blame China for the escape of the disease. I think it would actually be impossible to have done that. They discover novel cases in December and report it to WHO and then all hell breaks loose in January. The virus was already in other countries in January. That is a fact. There are plenty of reports of these cases but they won't be validated until we have the antibody test.

  18. Reports of positive results for ivermectin came from countries where parasite load is much higher than in Western countries. Knocking out parasites would cause immediate release of the immune system to tackle Covid in such patients. I feel like I have been waiting for months to hear a clever person suggest this possibility.

  19. Gain of function experiments are done in adapted mice, they have human type cells. The experimental virus is adapted to work in mice as well. Such a virus would. not stand a chance outside of a lab. Furthermore just because we can say that people can develop virus as a bioweapon does not mean that it can be done with the current understanding in the science.

  21. In black communities there are food deserts. No food shops like we have as a matter of course in white areas. They have to to long rides on buses if there are any. Good fresh food is often just unavailable. It is deliberate too. Like charging higher municipal taxes in black and latino areas.

  24. Sacco University researchers have isolated an italian strain of the virus. The original outbreak was with the Chinese strain but now they have an italian strain. Could there be an Iranian strain too? We can only hope these are minor differences.

  28. I listened to a recent TWIV podcast where they discussed the hypothesis that children are getting through this easily because of the immunisations they undergo in early life. It seems well known to the expert community that after immunisation people are very much less likely to get infectious disease for some time.

  32.  @justylex  Dreadful stuff fructose. Ordinary corn syrup has very little fructose. If your sweet tooth is unconquerable there is an alternative. You will still get the love handles but your liver will be OK.

  42. Wuhan institute was put in place after SARS 1. Wuhan is a huge city situated in the middle of China and well=situated for international links. To say that there is something sinister about the fact that there was an outbreak and it was first reported in that city is definitely wrong headed. It is at the centre of a huge trade network. The scientists at the institute have worked with Western scientists since the start. The international community of virologists would stand behind Wuhan, but due to public madness they are lying low. So stop it.

  45. Since the numbers were swapped to a new system the new cases have dropped but the death rates not so much. I think the corruption is not so deep that death rates numbers can be suppressed. Watch the this space as they say. See in a week if the numbers are commensurate.

  46. I think they were speaking for the public. In the early weeks no-one thought this would turn into a pandemic. It was related to SARS so the first thought was that it would be similar. The may have expected an epidemic but not this pandemic. I think your rant is really uncalled for. There are no people alive who have been through such an event.

  48. Dear Doctor John, my only disagreement with you is that I don't think China did that badly at the beginning.of this. They had about 12 weird pneumonias in December and deaths too. That they had consciousness in their medical community is commendable. Yes early warning signals from doctors were slapped down for not going through channels. Is that so unusual? False alarms are also to be avoided. Am I wrong? But on the 31st of December they notified WHO. That is a big deal, it seems to me. On the 7th of January they shared the genetic details that they knew about the virus.WHO alerted all the world in January. We all watched as China locked down. We saw it all. It was a crazy confusing time on the ground in Wuhan. They didn't know how to treat it. They built emergency hospitals. They shared numbers, Terrible numbers. But the narrative is over and over in the media and on FB - its like Orwell. The real story is buried. I am not a bot. I am just some schmoo in Canada.
